If at LEAST they could deliver a strong, well written story like BioWare can, I'd excuse the linearity. But they can't, so JRPGs just tend to fail as games period.

Expressing your opinion as fact = fail.

Great games that did not have much story involved and few actually know of the story

Super Mario Bros (one of the oldest games ever, and never needed a story and still has a stong following)

Donkey Kong (why did he grab peach anyways)

Metroid (true Otakus know whats up but it was so fun it did not need story)

Perfict Dark (there was a story but no-one cared about it)

there are tons of other games that had their story confined to the instruction booklet that no-one read yet everyone played... do not say story is a must have to a game, its great to have but NOTHING i mean NOTHING can replace good gameplay. You could have the best story ever put into a game but if the game as horrible to play no-one will care how good the story is.

Oh this soooo much. Frankly I find the plot of KOTOR to be the best in ANY BioWare game. And I happen to like Persona 3 far more than KOTOR. So yeah. Subjective. I've cried far more because of JRPG games than I ever have a BioWare game.

JRPGS are some of the most popular console games world wide, people like the gameplay to them. Like i said before you do not NEED an epicly great story for a great game as long as you have great gameplay. However if you only have average gameplay you must have a story that people want to keep going so they can find out what happens next..

Look at FF7 it had a good story if you payed attention to it as well as some of the best gameplay that genre has to offer. Look at that it was a massivle hit and still in many people eyes one of the best games ever made.

Well, this is a given. Any game where you can throw down your assault rifle and have it blow up and kill enemies is going to be an instant classic.

the fact remains people put too much of a point on sotry, story is not important when you compare it to gameplay. I just hope sometime soon make makers put the focus back on gameplay rather then bloom, lighting, and particle effects. The story and look of a game means nothing next to gameplay. I want fun games again not game that are ZOMG!! it looks so good, but sucks a donkeys third testicle to play

I never understood this current trend of thinking that "linear=bad".

Game is either good or bad. I don't give a **** if it's linear or not.
Books are linear. Movies are linear too.

My favorite game ever is DeusEx. 2nd is FF7, which being a jrpg means it's linear as hell... doesn't matter.

Even GTA is linear as hell and just pretends to be a sandbox. You have no freedom on how to complete a mission. You have actually more freedom on missions in Mass Effect 2 than in GTA4...
I'll take "more linear" BioWare games over pretend-to-be-sandbox game anytime. I'm with BioWare since Baldur's Gate and they've never let me down (unlike the GTA series for example...)

If someone wants non-linear sandbox game, go play EVE Online.

Oh, wait. No I don't.

Oh well. I feel the same. :?

These type of games like Dragon Age Origins and Mass Effect are far more open ended then Oblivion.. Sure Oblivion you can walk any where and do anything which is great, intil you realize in every direction is the same crap, and it hardly makes a bit of difference what you do... DAO and ME have a narrative that have its parts of linirity, but they are intertwined with side missions and important decisions.. Not to mention the character development system in this game is extremely weak compared to the system in ME2 which people felt it was dumbed down.. Yet people consistently say Oblivion is the open ended game unmodded? Me no think so.

When I think back on the Bioware titles I have played, Intricate level design or large maps to explore are not part of the experience. I understand developers have to prioritize, but both the "worlds" in Dragon age and Mass effect are very tight and limited. It's too bad, in my opinion.

Does anyone agree?

Bioware is making the same structure game since baldu'r s gate :

Nice to see somebody made a chart.  Yea Bioware needs to mix it up a bit.

That's pretty much accurate.  I know what you're saying but considering they nerf you and only a select few people even recognize you, they knock you down a few steps.  Hell you don't even remember who you are.

Books and movies 99.9999999999999% of the time don't have the amount of interactivity as a video game. We know have the hardware and software to give a much better experience as opposed to 10 years ago.

Game books are dead, and the last and only movie I've seen that offers "choices" is Final Destination 3.

Those are all in the same range for me, except that I've never played a persona game before. The way you say they are better than all the games that rank among the very best games ever (in my book) I may just have to give those a look.

Warning: You should know by now I dig sad endings. :police:
And the game has Hitler in it. That made it win.
