Hey, Gex 2 was actually a pretty fun game.  Definetly one of the better mario clones during the day.

Fable II is to Fable one kind of what like Mass Effect 2 is to Mass Effect 1.

Mass Effect 2 improved upon Mass Effect 1 in every way except story.  I felt Fable II was the same way.

That is the only Halo game I have not played.  No way am I forking over 60 dollars for a brief mission pack.

I like this thread. A few of my examples have been posted already, some not. Here are my worst sequels (not counting spin offs or sports titles that are always the same):

Suikoden IV
Any Final Fantasy after 8
Any Alone in the Dark after the original PC game
Resident Evil Code: Veronica (but I love the rest of them)
Dino Crisis 3 (WTF happened?)
Modern Warfare 2 (most over hyped game I've ever played)
Chrono Cross (couldn't possibly had a worse followup to Chrono Trigger)
Star Ocean: The Last Hope

and the winner of worst sequel ever: Devil May Cry 2 & 4. I swear this series has the Star Trek curse.

I think someone mentioned Perfect Dark Zero the last time we had a thread like this - that's definitely my vote if prequels count. I will say the multiplayer had some pretty cool elements, but the single-player was a disaster after the first game (which gets my vote for most underrated shooter ever).

I think that's a pretty fair take on Fable II, which I thought was stronger (on the whole) than the first game. I partially disagree with you about ME2. We've got plenty of other places to argue about that, though.

Chrono Cross always gets a bad rap. :( It wasn't the best JRPG ever, but I thought it was pretty good. Coming out so many years after Chrono Trigger guaranteed it would never live up to anyone's expectations as well. I don't think anything short of bringing back the entire original cast would have been enough.

Also, Perfect Dark was excellent. Just want to throw in my agreement there. One of the few FPS games with genuine personality and a fun co-op experience.

I think it is me you are referring to.

i mean what the hell went wrong? How can you go from Perfect Dark to Perfect Dark Zero?

How can such a change of quality happen!?

perfect dark zero had some great multiplayer, too bad my xbox DESTROYED all the campaign data quite literally so i never got past the ruins and can't really take a stance on that (something caused my xbox to scratch it out also causing problems when 16 bots and players were all unloading machine guns on each other)

SO the last hope wasn't that bad (although i can only compare to the last star ocean which i could never beat cus i was horribly underleveled on the last level and couldn't back track to grind) its fighting made up for the emo and **** dolls parading around the worst story line EVER

Final Fantasy VII. Perhaps not technically a sequel to a game but it's a sequel to a series.

I love the game. It's going to be interesting to play the reskinned XBLA version in March - my nostalgia is going to be put to the test.

Oops, sorry, you're right. Yeah, it's mystifying to me. One of the few concrete things I can point to: the first game had a great sense of fluidity and grace in its movement and controls (particularly by N64 standards). Zero didn't have that - it was substantially clunkier despite its incredible advantage in controller layout. I'll always be frustrated by that game. I ran out and bought a 360 for it (as Microsoft was hoping) and then...yeah.

Does a game that claims to continue and build on the legacy of its predecessors count? If so, I'll nominate The Sims 3 and Simcity Societies. Terrible games that stripped all polish, flair, challenge and complexity that diehard fans had come to expect. I'm still disappointed till this day.

oh god yes, i completely agree on sims 3, the developers went out of their way to make the game too nice and wholesome

no murder, no REAL theft (only a supposed career that is the same as everything else and kleptomania), can't even be a maid, no love triangles, no one sided relations, i could never figure out how to throw parties at public places i made, it was HORRIBLE

I mean how does that HAPPEN? How does that strange indescribable factor that makes a game great just vanish? I cant really define what was great in PD that PD Z lacked which confuses me.

Fallout 3. It's not that it's a bad game, but it's just Oblivion in future. It's far, far, FAR away from old Fallouts.

As already mentioned by some others I would have to rate Storm Of Zehir the biggest pile of gabbage I have ever had the misfortune to play.

UFO: Enemy Unknown is an amazing classic. XCom: Terror From the Deep is equally good.

And then, Julian Gallop stopped doing them and there was that monster called UFO: Aftermath that is a huge piece of waste; but it got even worse in Aftershock.

You know the funniest thing ever? The base game was coded so that a playable "thief" Sim can't even go and steal things from neighbors unless he or she is GREETED BY THE OWNER FIRST AND LET INTO THE HOUSE. I have no idea whether that was a deliberate decision or an oversight, but whatever it is, it defies all logic. Thankfully some mods fixed that (and if you're playing Sims 3 still, I hope you have J.M.Pescado's AwesomeMod because it makes things much much better). Groan.

Also, the amount of bugs is ridiculous. I'm not even thinking about buying World Adventures because I've heard of so many glitches and game-breaking problems going on, especially those caused by EA patches. *facepalm* I think I'll wait for 3-4 years until the price hits rock-bottom and the issues are more or less ironed out before buying anything.

Eh, I kind of disagree. When Bethesda announced that they'd be doing the third Fallout, I got the first one from Gametap. Played it, liked it (hated the time limit, though). Fallout 3 was different, which isn't a bad thing. Oh, and I hatehatehateHATE VATS. So, yeah, I like some of the changes, liked other changes less.

Actually that's fair enough.  I enjoyed those ones too, especially the two-player mode on the 'Cube version of [i]SA2[/2].  Am cautiously optimistic about #4 though...  Oh Sega, Why do I keep lining up for you to break my heart?

I didn't enjoy Sonic Adventure 2 much. It felt like a mini-game bonanza compared to the first. Or maybe it's my dislike of Eggman. Who knows. :P Of course nothing in SA2 compared to the later games with Shadow. I'm trying to block out my memories of those games and I can't.

Also, I almost chose Fallout 3 for my pick since it was disappointing as a sequel. Then I thought about it and decided not to. It didn't feel fair comparing it to a much older game developed in a very different time from a company completely uninvolved in the process. It was a disappointment to me in a few ways though.
