No matter what I do, I can't get past the ogre at the top of the tower to light the beacon. My party dies fast. Is there a strategy that works best? I've tried EASY setting with no better luck. Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

This is quite boring but is what i use when soloing. After your party dies, run circles around the tiles in the tower with the ogre trailing behind. During this time your cooldowns will finish and your mana/stamina will replenish. If your a mage cast a single spell preferably cone of cold and continue running. For warriors/rogues, use a single attack and continue running.
Its fool proof, but takes 15 or so minutes. Good luck

Extreme Cheese: Locae the barrels and hide behind them. The Ogre will not be able to hit you and you can use ranged atk to slowly kill it.
Aternative: All chars get ranged weapons. Use the char whom is targeted by the Ogre to kite it while the rest of the party range it to death. When the ogre switch targets, kite using the char being targeted.
Another Alternative: Use posion or traps. Posions can be bought from the quartermaster (acid flask, fire bomb and soutrot bomb).

Thanks Byron. I'm playing a mage. I tried that but my health pots are so low that when I stop to cast he whacks me and it's pretty much over. I'll keep trying that for now tho. Appreciated!

Yeah, tough fight with HN Warrior. Ogre took down me, Alistair and the mage. Dog got him in the end though. Probably be harder for other origins w/o Dog.

My first couple times through this seemed amazingly difficult (one of those unusually difficult battles when all things are considered)... for a battle mage, your goal is always to incapacitate and let your melee warriors engage... and at low levels, run like crazy when being chased... for this battle, a mage with Winter's Grasp and Paralyze will provide a distinct advantage, and if you have Stonefist also, be sure to use it wisely... note that paralyzing the Ogre will cause him to drop anyone he in his grasp... and that even the "helper" mage can have Paralyze (well, at least he always does for me on the PC when i do all the side quests). Using the Re-spec package (that is abit buggy) i re-spec alistair so that he has Poison Making skills and that seems to help also (along with having the Tower Guards engage in Melee... oh, and if you have Paralyze, you also have Weakness... and make sure you chose Herbalism so you can make Lesser Heals and Lesser Lyrium potions... i'd be lost without my potions... i even set up tactics slots to auto-heal...
Enjoy.
Enjoy.

I use the extreme chesse method. you can do that on nightmare without needing to use a single potion or having any member die. just put a archer/mage in each direction and kite with the target. the ogre might get a lucky hit, but you can do the whole fight without even get a single blow. the fight is quite fast over with this method if you cast magic aswell.

These days I actually do use the barrels. I know I can beat the Ogre without them, so I have nothing to prove. Using the barrels is just easier.

You big cheats
I found that not so hard, think about 2 attempts doint it properly. I had a rogue character, and i saved my stun for when someone was picked up. Its a good fight when done properly.
Im a bit worried if you are struggling on that part it gets a lot harder later on. Strangely i get stuck on other fights people breeze through!! I think its down to your play style which fights are easy and which are tough!! All the advice up here is good, i would add saving your special moves till he picks someone up or he is giving other characters trouble.
Also as a mage you need to make sure you dont do too much damage. Sounds silly but if you hit it hard it will come after you, so concentrate on backing up your friends and saving your best spells for the right time. Dont just throw everything at him immediately. Attacking slowly gives others a chance to get his attention. Try it properly without cheating using these tactics let me know how you do i bet you can do it!!

i never even thought to hide behind the barrels, although i did hide behind the bar in KOTOR to fight the twins...
As far as encounter difficulty goes, there are certainly strategies and selections that can get you through Nightmare without too much difficulty (and yes, even this first Ogre Battle on Nightmare, and without hiding)...
But, the game is known for having a few encounters that seem way out there as far as difficulty goes when compared to the whole game (there's one in the Cirlce Tower that i've always found pressing).
The whole DPS/Threat thing was new for me, and a true annoyance at first; but once i put armor on my mage and learned to use taunt and stun tactics, it all became much easier.
It''s a great game, but after 250+ hours, i may start cutting back a bit...

They arent so hard really. Make sure you have a healer and youll be fine (Wynne when you get her is good enough for that). If your tank has Frost and spell resistance its fine as well I think. And get the dps to be on ranged, so they won't get the aoe:)
As for the fight on topic. What I usually do is when playing a mage, heal the tank a bit, works wonders and otherwise kite the ogre with his target, that way he can't get many hits in.

Save a stun for when he grabs someone... when he does stun him... proceed to profit

stun for a rogue is key as a 2W or Ranged build.

The key to the ogre fight is a strong tank. Alistair should really draw most of the threat, and just keep him chugging health pots to keep him on his feet. Save shield bash for if/when someone gets grabbed (as you might be able to knock them loose). Rogues should save Dirty Fighting for the same reason.
If you're playing a mage, you can always throw a glyph on the floor to help hold the ogre. GoP is invaluable. Either throw it down as a trap in case the ogre goes after you, or paralyze the thing early and let your fighters wail on him. Just watch health levels of everyone. You and Alistair can finish the thing by yourselves if need be.

It's really easy, just have who ever he is currently targeting run in circles, while every else uses bows. Fire magic also helps.

Paralyze him once it wears off the ogre will be really pissed at your mage so just run him around in tight circles so the ogre is just a touch behind him, he'll keep chasing while your 3 other characters beat the crap out of him. No tanking, healing, potting or exploiting geometry necessary!

Easiest way to do it without cheating: Make sure Alistair has taken poison making--he should be able to do this without using the respec mod. Just take it the first time you get a chance. Apply deathroot poison to his sword. Enjoy watching the ogre get stun locked. Unless you're a rogue PC. Then it's better to just use the poison yourself.
Other than that there's a plethora of tactics. The first few times I fought him I found myself controlling the mage (or playing one) and running away like a coward and throwing paralyzes or CoCs whenever they cooled down/enough mana regenned and other wise pelting him while trying to make corners sharp enough to lead him through my melee.
As I gained a bit more control of the way the game works, however, I made subtle changes to my tactics and haven't had to run away or even had anyone die on the last couple attemps (Rogue, and Mage) With my mage I turned on flaming weapons, and tossed freezes on him intermittently, and kept him from sustaining a grab with winter's grasp/CoC. Near the end one of the tower guards was a bit beaten up so I just laid into him with everything I had.

For the lack of potion issue, buy all the elfroot you see off the camp vendor (he has 8 each time) before you go into the Wilds and when you return from the wilds. This in addition to the elfroot you gather will be ample. Buy some flasks and when you head to tower of ishal, the tower mage that joins your group will set you up with a nice supply. You probably won't need 'em, but it lets you hit the ground running and gives extra insurance in case you don't quite have your groove on.

I use the duck duck goose method. I have 3 members spread out and one runner. The Ogre chases the runner, runner runs in circles. Have the rest of the party do ranged attacks (bow/arrow etc). Each time Ogre switches targets the target will then become the runner. You can kill Ogre without taking much damage or using any spells.

Odd thread to re-open, after one month I guess he's either beaten it or given up.
