For me it was all about spacing. I always made sure that the ogre (or any boss, for that matter) was being attacked from multiple directions. On my second run-through, I also made sure that my rogue was always attacking from behind to get the back stab damage.

I find this fight quite difficult with a PC mage, as a PC mage likely hasn't selected the best spells for this particular fight. It's really easy to draw aggro with a PC mage (especially since the tanks in the party probably aren't yet good at holding aggro), and you absolutely must not do that if you want to survive the fight (assuming you don't hid behind the barrels).
With a non-mage PC, the Circle Mage who joins you at the bottom of the tower is wonderful because I outfit him with this particular fight in mind (I give him the glyph line and just paralyze the ogre with Paralysis Explosion).
The best approach I've found for a PC mage who hasn't been prepared for this particular fight is to act as a pure support character. Heal the fighters and stun the Ogre when necessary to break a grab.
