After you finish his quest(assuming you told him that everyone is out for themselves) talk to him back at camp. You will be prompted with a dialogue where you have to confirm that you meant what you said to him.
If you don't confront him later at camp he will not be hardened... I think that's the problem.

Edit: WOW, ok, no, I was definitely wrong. But the dialog is very interesting when the warden lets Alistair be executed. Unhardened and unarranged before means he won't accept the marriage if you spare Loghain.
Ok, he does not have to be hardened nor does the marriage have to be arranged beforehand when you execute Loghain.
*sigh* I'm still traumatized by that last conversation, though, when my warden tells him to be a man for once as he's being dragged off to prison. There is SO much to this game.
Sending him off is bad enough (especially if you're in a relationship with him: "I had these dreams...they don't matter now.":() but having Alistair executed is the worst thing. It's up there with killing Connor in terms of making me feel ill in real life. The voice acting in those scenes is amazing, though.

I don't think this is possible (although not totally sure) since you have to deal with Logain before you say that you will rule with Alistair. So if you spare Logain, Alistair will flip out before that conversation comes up and he will leave.WingsandRings wrote...
Is it possible to have a hardened Alistair marry you (HN) and still let Loghain live? Or is the only option Hardened Alistair + Anora = Loghain can live?
I just played it so that Alistair marries Anora and Logain lives and I thought it was not going to happen like that because Alistair was throwing his big fit. Finally he let me say "I thought you were going to marry Anora and rule together". I think all in all he was just mad because I made him give back all his armor and wear Margolie's noble clothing to the Landsmeet. In the cut scene where we were walking in, as he turned around coming in through the door we all noticed that he was wearing the exact same outfit as the guy right behind him. The fashion faux pas made him extra mad and he took it out on Logain.

Anora has to be Queen - either alone, with Aistair, or with HNM - in order to spare Loghain as if it's up to Alistair he'll kill him right there, which is also why if you want Alistair/Anora to happen don't have Alistair fight Loghain. Is it possible to have a hardened Alistair marry you (HN) and still let Loghain live? I don't know how so many people neglected to make the hardening stick. I guess it must be an approval thing because you don't even need to talk to him back at camp, just talk to him ever again and he'll tell you about how he thinks you're right.

Actually you do need the high approval and the conversation with him at camp. I said the hardening quote to him when talking about Goldanna and I figured he was harden. But by the time the Landsmeet rolled around, he didnt want to be king. On my next playthrough I got his approval high enough, he chatted with me, then he was fully hardened.

I know you need a reasonably high approval but I always have the follow-up conversation with him two seconds after he says he needs time to think right outside of Goldanna's house so being at camp is not necessary.
i just usually end up doing it at camp. I usually do the Goldanna quest somewhat early into the game, so by the time I have his approval high enough I usually talk to him about it at the camp.

Alistair's approval needs to be pretty damn high, apparently, and that can be hard to do (especially if you don't use him much, are a male character, or a female character not romancing him).Sarah1281 wrote...

Talk to him in camp. It really isn't all that difficult to get his approval to 70+. He also has plenty of presents that help a great deal. Duncan's shield and his mother's amulet are the two biggies.

Not really. If Alistair is hardened (and to get that ending he has to be) then he's very distant and formal in his cameo.Jean-Funk Van Damme wrote...
so that means alistair and your warden are friends again? great news, bc not many people achieve this ending/know how to get it. maybe i let loghain alive next time and try this.

i have tried 15 (exageration) different ways to get anora and alistair to marry and keep loghain alive. i've read all the helps and hints i can find about it. nothing seems to be working. i hardened alistair, i didnt harden alistair it didnt change the outcome. alistairs approval is 90-100. i got them to agree, i got anora's support, it doesnt matter who i have fight loghain (been using morrigan) when riordan proposes making loghain a grey warden alistair freaks out and anora refuses to marry forcing me to chose her or alistair (making him king or a drunk) and her a queen or killed or imprisoned. all the guides, and helps and hints ive read say that i should be able to get them to marry and get loghain as a grey warden. any help would be spectacular. my current character is female rogue in a relationships with alistair and zevran.

Can you Recruit Loghain AND have Alistair still become king if he's unhardened? I'd really like this outcome, but I always heard "hardening" Alistair makes him entirely unfun, so I never bothered with it before. But, I really like the premise of sacrificing Loghain. I have a feeling I'm not going to be getting that ending though.

I don't believe so. An unhardened Alistair runs away if you spare Loghain.

Alistair is not 'unfun' if you harden him, he's just less likely to disapprove when your Warden does something bad.....Such as if you kill Brother Genitivi after finding the Urn.MEMANIAsama wrote...

Depending how you look at it, hardening him makes him MORE fun. Not less
