Hey guys,
I'm doing my second ME2 playthrough on PC. Just prior to starting ME2, I did one quick and easy first time playthrough on ME1 to get the backstory and an import. It's been a long time since I've played a shooter game because I've never been that good at them. I've been playing RTS, 4x, and simulation games the last several years, but I've played through a few of the FPS classics like Doom, Quake, DukeNukem, Wolfenstein, etc. This is also my first RPG experience. Never knew what I was missing in the genre until now.
I'm playing on veteran and I'm still getting drilled in some areas. There are a lot of things I don't understand about the game. For one is character setup. For example, Is there an advantage to a Spacer versus an Earthborn? What about class, what classes are strong and which are weak?
Weapons and powers have me confused. I'm never sure what's best and when it's best to use them.
I'm a total RPG noob and I'm not great at shooters to boot, but I really enjoy this game, it's just brilliant. I'd like to get a better handle on how to play it.
Thanks in advance for any advice.
Help on 2nd Playthrough

Your background story does not have any impact on the gameplay, it's just a roleplay bit.
If the game is confusing to you, go with the soldier class. It's simple and powerful and can handle any situation without having to improvise tactics and such. Just change your ammo type depending on what defenses your enemies are using.
Red health bar - anything goes, but cryo ammo is best
Yellow armor bar - incendiary ammo
Blue shield bar - disruptor ammo
Purple barrier bar - concussive shot
Also rapid fire guns are better against shields, while slow fire weapons like pistols and snipers are better against health and armor.
That said, any class goes, but imho the soldier is the easiest way to learn the basics.

There isnt that many skills to choose from, so just spam powers until you find a combo you like.

Your origin plays no part in your abilities, just the storyline. So spacer, colonist, ruthless, warhero... only a plot device.
The classes are well balanced all around but each have their own strengths/weaknessess.
On higher difficulties, you must make use of cover better and only attack/fire when there's a break in the enemy's fire. Also, it's a good idea to take out charging enemies first and leave the ones staying back in cover for last. Enemies up close can do a lot more damage then those far away.
Ammo:
Disruptor ammo - good vs mechs/synthetics, shields. At high levels it will also make enemy weapons ineffective for short periods of time.
Incendiary ammo - good vs armor/health. At high levels will also spread to enemies near the one you are firing on and "shock" them for short periods.
Cryo ammo - chance to freeze enemies. When frozen, enemies take more damage and can be "shattered" with critical shots.
Shredder ammo - good vs health
Warp ammo - good vs barriers/armor
Armor Piercing ammo - good vs armor/health. At high levels, it also has the highest +damage to weapons.
Powers:
Warp - good vs barriers/armor/health, somewhat vs shields
Overload - good vs shields/synthetics
Reave - good vs collectors
Pull/Throw - good to set up warp explosions, good vs husks
Singularity - good vs husks and to hold charging enemies
You should take your time and set up your squadmates to focus on only particular things beforehand. Squad makeup at higher difficulties can make things easy or very hard for you.
Miranda is a good squadmate for all missions. Her class skill gives team health/damage bonuses and you can max her Warp and Overload to be effective for both mech missions and collector missions.
Garrus is good to max overload on for mech missions.
Zaeed is good to max Disruptor Ammo (squad ammo) and inferno grenade on for mech missions.
Samara/Thane are good to max Warp on and Reave on for collector missions.
Tali is good to max Energy Drain and Combat Drone on for mech missions or missions with mercenaries that have shields. Although the drone is handy as a distraction for a wide variety of missions.
Grunt/Jacob are good to max inferno ammo on and Barrier/Fortification. Good tanks although Grunt has the edge here. But inferno ammo is great for missions with husks or armored mercenaries.
Legion is good to max drone on for mech missions or as distraction. See Tali.
Jack is good to max Warp ammo (squad ammo) and shockwave on. Shockwave is good for killing husks and Warp ammo is effective vs mercenaries with barriers or collectors.
Mordin is good to max incinerate on. It's great for mercenary/collector missions as it will burn through armor/health quickly.
I've found Warp, Overload, and AP ammo to be the best abilities all around.
I've found Shredder ammo, Cryo ammo, AI hacking to be the worst abilities all around.

classes are dependent on your playstyle, but for the most part Soldier/Infiltrator/Sentinel are more powerful/easy to use than Adept/Engineer/Vanguard. They also have unique class powers; Soldiers have bullet time in Adrenaline Rush, Infiltrator gets an invisibility Assassination Cloak, Sentinel gets Tech Armor, which recharges shields instantly, and Vanguard gets a Superman-style Charge, which is difficult to use properly.
Only certain classes can use certain weapons, though everyone can use the pistol and heavy weapons. Soldier can use everything but submachine gun (which is just a weaker version of the assault rifle). Always use ammo powers, since you can have them constantly active to no ill effect.

AI hacking can do wonders on high difficulties. Use them on the rocket wielding geth or the hunters and let the fun commence

Thanks for the replies so far, great information. Makes things quite a bit clearer. I'll definitely be referencing this thread for the next few missions.

Dont forget when your leveling up to think hard about what choices your making with regards to putting points in certain powers. Taking a good balance of squadmates helps too, but in general Miranda is always a good bet to take.
Can you give anymore specifics about what your stuck on or what kinda progress you have made? Its an awesome game but I can see how it would be awkward if your not used to that kinda thing.
There is some training vids if you go to your private terminal on the normandy, not sure how much use they are though as I cant recall whats in them.

The guys pretty much nailed it with the weapons types and ammo. It was the Shield, Armor, Health thing I was getting confused on, but I'll take any advice I can get regarding combat tactics. The AI makes pretty good work of me and from what I've read, veteran difficulty should be pretty easy if you know what you're doing.
