First, I would like to start by saying
that ME2 is an amazing game. Awesome storyline, great graphics, cool
missions. Over all, a kick ass game, and totally worth the wait.
Though after going through a couple of plays (now on Hardcore with a
vanguard) I have developed a few gripes that I think are greatly
hindering the game.
Weapons
Lets face
it, in ME1 once you got the HMW weapons, that was about all you used,
other than some ammo differences, everyone used virtually the same
weapons. My complaint here is the weapons view, I liked seeing the
graphical interface telling me how much damage I could expect my
newest death machine to do. Now that the different weapons do
different amounts of damage vs. different defenses, I would have
liked a graph or something, and have the graph or somethings update
as you got new upgrades.
Also, most of the weapons that are
from DLC are ****. The black hole gun is nice, if you are fighting a
swarm of un-armored and un-shielded enemies, but how often does a
zombie horde run at you. The Collector Assault Rifle is pretty sick,
strips shields like crazy and with inferno ammo, does fairly well
against armor. The evicerator shotgun is the biggest waste I have
seen, when I get DLC I want something that is better than the gun I
can get in-game. A 3 round magazine with a damage decrease for a
little bit more range is worthless, seeing as anyone using a shotgun
gets as close as possible anyway.
Re-importation
Continued
play in ME2 has completely losses its appeal. My first play through,
I had nearly maxed all my skills, and there were still side quests I
could have done. I never have been a fan of the graduated point buy
system, but I was hoping that it would either extend out past 4 on a
replay, or you would be able to add more than one new skill. But oh
how wrong I was. Though by far, the worst thing that I see about
re-importing, is the loss of all your upgrades. At the end of the
game, you are a hard core, cold calculated, killing machine that can
stay in combat nearly indefinitely. Having insanely strong powers,
tons of ammo, your favorite gun can do everything, your shields can
take nearly any impact, and you have tons of health. So you bring
Shepard back and all you get is your armor and guns. You loose
everything that made you awesome, but the enemies are scaled up so
high, I find that I am almost forced to stay back and shoot
everything with my assault rifle because my powers and shotgun aren't
strong enough to take on even the simplest foes, which leads into the
next topic.
Powers
This is simple
physics, I don't care what kind of armor you are wearing, if I hit
you with a blast of over 1,000 newtons, you are going to fly. Powers
now are merely used to stun enemies so you can shoot them for a
second before diving for cover again. They are quite helpful in
normal difficulty because there are fewer enemies with shields or
armor. Though in hardcore, everyone has shields or armor, and a lot
have both. Therefore, powers are useless until you use your plethora
of guns to wear down those barriers. Once they are down, since you
don't have any upgrades, your level 4 power, does jack **** to the
grunt because he has more health than you do.
A side note to that,
ammo powers are, in my opinion, stupid. When one of your allies gains
a squad ammo power, they feel the need to make sure that everyone is
using their ammo, regardless of what you are fighting. Like Zaeed
enabling squad disruptor against a horde of Vorcha, with armor. Not a
shield or synthetic in sight, but he insists that we have disruptor
ammo on, even though regular ammo or inferno ammo is better. Poor AI
in that case.
Shields and Armor
In ME1
you had the light medium and heavy armors that you could choose
between having insane shields, insane armor, or a balance. now you
are stuck with the relatively mediocre upgrade choices you can find
in one of the 15 stores that never get new goods in, never restock,
and never offer better stuff based on level, difficulty, or storyline
progress.
Cool down
So you can
upgrade your guns, and upgrade your powers, what about cool down
times? Those barely go down, even with maxed out skill they get
reduced by 9%. When you are dealing in seconds thats insignificant.
Now then, waiting 4 seconds to use a power again is no big deal, but
when you have to wait 4 seconds to use any power, that is where
things get useless. The whole point of playing something other than a
soldier, was you could sling powers instead of using a gun. A LV 30
Adept in ME1 barely needed a party because of the near constant
singularity field they could keep up along with the lifts, throws,
and warps, they were nearly untouchable. Now, regardless of level,
you have to have backup because of the defensive stripping you have
to do before you can even think about using your best
powers.
Solutions
Because I never like
to gripe without offering a solution, I will. All the problems I have
stated before could be fixed with Patches/Upgrades/DLC. You could
release them individually if so desired so people could pick and
choose which ones they wanted. All in all, like I said, I love this
game, but the mechanics are pissing me off to no end.
