Skip dog in Ostagar and recruit him when you return later. Finding dog there pulls on the heartstrings more than having him randomly run up to you when you head to Lothering, imo. Worth checking out at least once.
Is RTO worth it?

So far I'd have to say its not worth it. Mainly cause the items are the big thing about this expansion and they won't carry over. While I enjoy dressing in the kings armour and carrying his fathers sword nobody else seems to notice this so there doesn't appeear to be a major advantage to the gear as its pretty compairable to most the other top end gear.
Likewise the scrolls you find offer some insight on why Logain may have doen what he did, I don't know has anyone been able to confront him about it? I thought I might but unlike shale it hasn't opened up any more dialogue options.Perhaps I missed something, I hope I did and it would have been more worthwhile if people either noticed the armour/sword or what was written in those notes comes into play. Specially as we know we wont be carrying them over to the expansion.
So unless someone knows they do come into play, this expansion would have been great as part of the game but as additional content release a couple of months before the expansion I'd have to say wait for Awakening.

For additional conversation, you need to have the right people in your party, namely Alistair/Loghain and Wynne - the NPC's who were actually at the battle of Ostagar.
This DLC gave me as a player a sense of closure to the battle and giving the King a proper burial. From a rush-rush, hack-slash point of view, waste of time. However, from an immersive FRPG point of view, this DLC is worth the measly $5. Get real - I drink that much in coffee everyday!

When I went I completely forgot that Wynne was at the battle, so I didn't bring her along. I brought the dog instead, because he was there, and I hoped for some dog-specific content.
There wasn't any.

This is the correct perspective/mindset. you should be fine.Malanek999 wrote...
I think I will get it. Not expecting much.
I don't think anyone would describe RTO as Epic and Mindblowingly long. lol
It's a short sidequest, containing some relevant political in-game content, as well some battles and much loot grabbing.
