Please read all the way through to figure out what I'm really trying to say!

Ok, so I just finished playing a second time through DAO. I REALLY liked how the story was complex, and everything wasn't necessarily good v. bad like in KotOR.  Because I had played both KotORs and DAO and fell in love with the DAO choices whether it was good, bad, look out for yourself, be a softy, racist, and could actually spell out what you wanted to say along with last but not least, the combat, I decided to go get Mass Effect 1.

So far, Mass Effect has not seemed near as original. It seems like Star Wars (adept powers), along with Star Trek (blaster) combat. Granted, once I got used to it, I did start to like it more. At the same time though, none of it seems too original. It's not bad... just not anything new to me personally.

Again SO FAR ( I'm not very far through I don't think), the choice and value system doesn't seem to new either. It seems a lot like KotOR but instead of good v. evil, it is rule follower v. rebel. A nice change, but there really doesn't seem to be any in between or slanted views.

Finally, up to the point that I've gotten, the story seems rather linear. In DAO there were what I saw as 5 major steps in the game but within those stages, each part could vary greatly in end result. However, so far in Mass effect it seems like you end up accomplishing the same goals no matter what, it's just who did you kill, anger, or help along the way.

However, I can't really complain seeing as how I got it for 20 bucks.

THE POINT OF THIS THREAD is to find out if I should get Mass Effect 2 after I finish playing the first. If the things I mentioned above were not improved or tweaked at least, I don't think I want to get it. If there is a more dynamic and malleable story however, I could very well see myself making the purchase.

So please give me any of your insight or comparisons with Mass Effect 2 in comparison to Mass Effect 1 and DAO (I know DAO and Mass Effect series are different genres i.e. sci fi and medieval-ish, but you can compare story styles).

THANK YOU!!!

The Mass Effect 1 story is not bad. If you get past the Virmire mission and still are not impressed (or just don't like it) you're not going to gain anything from ME2.

Remember though, Dragon Age was release 2 years after Mass Effect, and clearly benefitted from and improved upon some of the cinematic techniques/direction used in ME.

Yea, I had thought about DAO being a newer game but I'm not really wondering about cutscenes or graphics. What I'm really wanting to know is how in DAO you could choose many different sides(Orzammar major choices for example) and still get the end result required. In doing so though, you majorly change how the story ends eventual allies, maybe a party member turns on you, etc, etc. I'm liking Mass Effect, I just wish that some of the choices you make weren't so black and white.

There are resolutions to certain situations that play out like that (Noveria for example, I think there are 3 ways to get into the garage, and a couple of ways the rest of that mission can play out), but not on the same scale or with as many choices as Dragon Age. Without spoiling either story, where Dragon Age might have 10 binary choices on a given mission (from my experience), Mass Effect might have 4.

Like I said though, if you get past Virmire and don't like it, you won't find much to like in ME2.
