I just bought Mass Effect Platinum hits with the inclusive Bring Down The Sky dlc. Now hard drive space is at a premium on my xbox and was wondering the following:

Once I've completed the Bring Down the Sky dlc, can I delete it from my hard drive? Will this cause problems for my game if I wish to play after doing so?

Yes, that will cause problems as there are still dependencies in your savegame. You won't be able to use it anymore if you delete the DLC:
