Mass Effect 1 kind of boring compared to mass effect 2?

I'm replaying Mass Effect 1 after finishing Mass Effect 2 (xbox versions). And I have to say that after all the changes they did, Mass Effect 1 feels way too easy, slow moving, and boring (also crappy gameplay, mako, etc.). Example, in ME1 it didn't really mattered who you brought on a mission, because anyone can do a decent job. Heck you didn't really have to tell them what to do. You can also just massacre enemies without going into cover if you rush them. While in Mass Effect 2, on insanity, it really is about bringing the right people for the right job, staying in cover, and using your class's skills correctly.

Another thing I noticed is that there isn't any urgency in ME1, and character development just seems too dull. Once they're in your party, you can spend the whole game without talking to them, and in the end, not miss much. Sure they'll tell you their back stories, and you get a mission out of some of them, but it feels so little compared to the loyally missions. Talking to them saves their lives. Hell, in ME2, by talking to them, you feel like you're earning their trust, and helping them has meaning to you and them. Miranda turns from a cold corporate ice-queen to a person that'll follow you to the end. Jack turn from a person in rage to a person that wants to cry. Liara in the first game is already talking about being attracted to you even though you've only talked to her 2 times (not counting when you saved her life), even though you have nothing in common, and their isn't anything there that spells "we got something"... hell, she helped kill her mom, and you expect a scene with her crying over her mother's death, but in the end, she's over it... and it's even worse when you have to sacrifice a team member, and no one ever says "Hey, after what you did... are you alright?". Just Joker and the other "human" team mate. That's it.

Also, Mass Effect 2 has more humor, the cutscenes feel more directed, worlds feel more lived in, and everything's streamlined so you're always on the move. No more useless abilities you didn't need, no more charm points you have to spend, no more "50 Pistols in my inventory", no more crappy re-charge, etc. It's just so much a better game then the first. Not to say there isn't any flaws with ME2, but it just feels so much better to play.

Anyways, this is just my option. I still think it's a good game, but it just feels bad playing it after playing Mass Effect 2. It's almost unplayable. To be honest, when I was playing ME2 for the first time, I thought the first was still a little better overall, but after playing them back to back, all I'm seeing are the flaws.

I did not find the original Mass Effect in any way boring,
Driving in the mako shooting thresher maws and geth is not as boring as mass effect 2 planet scanning

I don't think ME1 is boring. There are elements of ME1 that I like better than ME2 and vise versa. I don't like the Mako, but that's because maneuvering it around some of the worlds results in spraining my thumb.

I don't find ME1 boring but the gameplay on ME2 is definitely better than ME1. That said, in terms of story I think ME1 has the edge over ME2.

My main issue with ME2 is the whole recruitment/loyalty missions structure which occupies the majority of the play through. While they do flesh out the individual characters, they don't add anything to the story and are unrelated to it. After a couple of plays they become a chore to do and you just end up doing them because the story won't move along until you complete them and for the sake of having the team "ready" for the suicide mission.

ME1 and ME3 handled it better, incorporating the characters into the story in a much more natural/organic way. In any case, ME2 is a great game still.

Out of the first game, the one thing I don't miss is riding around in the Mako. It was novel at first, but it gets old being ambushed by thresher maws on every planet in the galaxy. And the landing zone was NEVER actually convenient to or otherwise well-situated toward the main attraction on any given planet. There was always an enormous mountain between you and anything of interest. A lot more attention clearly went into the Firewalker missions, which I appreciate - the Hammerhead itself could have filled the Mako's role and I wouldn't complain. (As long as things weren't so danged far apart.)

As far as the story...the hook in Mass Effect 2 is somewhat better. Chasing Saren never really comes to the forefront of chasing Saren. You're always occupied with something more immediate that really doesn't relate to Saren directly, which makes Saren's ability to elude you seem kind of obvious. The Collectors, on the other hand, are not running from YOU, it's more the other way around. They scoop up the occasional colony, but without massive preparation, you can't even approach them directly without definitely dying. They're just a more credible threat for most of the game.

The "sense of urgency" actually irritated me to no end. I really dislike being forced in particular directions when I press some invisible trigger, like recruiting a certain number of squadmates or going on a certain number of missions. I much preferred the way Virmire was introduced, for example, to the way Horizon was introduced. Going after the Reaper IFF works out in much the same way, although the surprise events that ensue after you actually go for it are really annoying.

As far as Liara being upset about her mother's death, you get that experience if you actually bring her to Noveria with you. There's no reason she should break down on the Normandy for you, she's a lot more mature than she's being given credit for. (A-hundred-and-six, you know.)

Personally, I liked the skill and inventory systems from the first game a lot better. Not the conversation system - paragon and renegade triggers are a lot better than "fill this bar to use witty comeback" - but the degree of customization available was a lot better in the first game. Especially considering that you could put one skill point into anything every level, and in ME2, you often don't even gain enough points to actually use in a given level. (And may have to conserve points to really exploit a loyalty power after it's unlocked.)

I personally greatly prefer ME2 when it comes to the characters and the gameplay. I've always hated the Mako, and I prefer many shorter missions over a handful looong missions any day. Playing an Adept, it's so much easier being able to shortkey three abilities instead of entering the power wheel for every new skill to use.

Story-wise, though, I think all the ME-games are absolutely amazing. I view them more as one story instead of three, so it's impossible for me to say that one is better than the other in that respect. But ME2 will always be the favourite game for me out of the three.

I too played ME2 before ME1. ME1 felt so much bigger, and much more rpg-like, but compared to ME2 it moved at the pace of a constipated snail. The inventory system was the worse, having to manage all that vendor trash.

I think story wise, both are good. ME2 has more personal stories that matter at the end because going through each team mate's loyalty mission makes you want them to survive the suicide mission.

I think ME1's overall story just shades ME2's because of the tragic end of the Protheans and the arrogance of Sovereign. It made me want to go all old DMC Dante on the oversized insect.

But ME2 improves on the inventory. Say what you will about RPGs. I absolutely hate collecting inane junk that improves marginally over previous equipment. I spent as much time clearing inventory in ME1 as I spent playing it.

I have to agree.

Since i built a new system and forgot to save my save files i had to play ME1 again, couldn't be bothered for my least favorite Soldier character, so i just started her fresh from ME2 and used the save editor to set needed ME1 import plot flags :D

ME1's actual gameplay just isn't as good as ME2 and 3. IMO, naturally. It does have it's charm, but just isn't that good.

I prefer the first Mass Effect in that you spend more time dealing with real problems, investigating Saren, Benezia, etc instead of spending two thirds of the game babysitting your squad and dealing with all their personal crap. Most of Mass Effect 2 is you basically running around gathering team mates and solving their problems instead of dealing with issues that matter, and that to me, makes it the more boring game.

For shooting I played Mass Effect 2. If there was an option to select the different missions I would use it for the combat scenarios. For story, game mechanics and immersion I play the first Mass Effect. There are many other scifi shooters with more enjoyable combat so I no longer have Mass Effect 2. Mass Effect 1 is unique and interesting in its heat system and I could count the number of games that are similar on one hand is I could remember their names. The first Mass Effect is something I play after watching Babylon 5, Farscape, or Stargate. The stories of the characters in Mass Effect 2 are entertaining but I feel are better suited to something like Firefly to continue my tv connection. I am still waiting for a sequel to the first Mass Effect that if it were told to me without names and proper nouns I could identify it as a continuation. Because I am a story and setting person my experience with Mass Effect 2 was lessened. The first Mass Effect filled my desire to play a game verson of the scifi shows I have previously linked to it. It felt like many seperate episodes of smaller stories in a larger setting but with build up to a larger story arc for the first season/game that was not continued in the later games. It was fun to explore the characters in Mass Effect 2 but it was not a sequel to Mass Effect.

If you look at Mass Effect 1 and 2 as different series you can see common patterns where different people find enjoyment.
