First of all, the ME1 romances were just plain better. There was more dialogue per character and the romance options on the trees were MUCH better implemented.

REALLY?

Liara's dialogue 1: You get to know her
Liara's dialogue 2: She's in love with you
Liara's dialogue 3: She tells you about Asari mating rituals.

Her side dialogue: She talks about her relationship with her mother
Her side dialogue 2: She talks about Asari in addition their mating rituals.

Sex.

This is different from anyone in ME2 how?  Except that Liara will continue to talk to you if you tell her "not interested".

Haven't gome through all the romance options but still...

1. Thane
2. Garrus
3.Kaidan ( what can i say, he's nice, sweet, do like him but is too safe kind of character )
4.Jacob (i mean...i just can't go through it again, end of story)

Never really romanced Liara, but then again i was never really tempted to try.
Edit: For male options..hm..well from what i've seen (not played through) i liked paragon Jack the most, it was the most emotional of the male LI bunch...with Tali as second. Miranda...ah well, it just seemed as some said too superficial...

I have to agree with this. It made me laugh. I'm recently replaying ME1 as a renegade to carry over into ME2. I got Liara and basically acted like a complete jerk to her when she was on board for the first time. Second conversation with her? She's rambling on about how there's a connection between us and trying to jump me. It made me laugh out loud.

Tali dialogue 1: It's good to be back with you. Here's an upgrade.

Tali dialogue 2: Hey, I need help with this loyalty quest

Tali dialogue 3: Thank you for helping me with that loyalty quest

Tali dialogue 4: Wanna hook up?

Miranda 1: Here's a little about me.

Miranda 2: Here's a little more (including information about my father)

Miranda 3: I need help (loyalty quest)

Miranda 4: Thank you for helping me, and I like you and I envy you... and let's start a romanc or I'll never speak to you again.

Garrus 1: Good to be aboard, here's a gun upgrade.

Garrus 2: I found Sidonis & I need your help.

Garrus 3: Thanks for the help with Sidonis / I have reach / wanna bone?

I will grant that the first game might not have had that much dialogue either. I haven't it in a while, so maybe my memory isn't dead on. Still, I KNOW that in the first game you at least established that you were interested in the people before your final conversation with them. Is there even a "choosing" scene in ME2 like the one in ME? I wasn't able to trigger one if there is, and I don't think that is the case. How can you have jealousy between LI's if you don't actually get in a relationship until their final dialogue? In fact, because of how the system is set up, you can actually sleep with one team mate, break it off with them the final mission, and then pick up romances with the other squad mates since they are locked in their infinite "wanna bone" conversation.

Perhaps I was incorrect about the quantity of dialogue. Maybe my memory of ME1 is just too spotty. I just know that all of the ME2 romances struck me as feeling hurried, forced, or both.

Maybe it's because I went straight from playing Dragon Age to ME2? That might explain it.

Dragon Age certainly beats the pants off both of them, I don't think we'll get much disagreement on that.

While I liked Liara, Tali and Ashley more than I liked Leliana or Morrigan, I agree that the romances and dialog in Dragon Age was better executed.  Mass Effect does make it a little too....easy.....or maybe the better word is, they are very forthcoming.  After one or two chats, they want you in bed.  In Dragon Age, it felt more realistic because you actually had to talk with them quite often (unless you gave Morrigan the Black Grimoire and asked for a kiss, then she just got super horny).

I hope in ME3, they make the romance dialog more like it was in Dragon Age where you have to actually talk to them quite a bit before you start a romance (unless a romance from ME1 or 2 is already started, of course.  Then it should just continue into ME3.)  But Liara, Tali and Ashley are still my favorites, followed by Lel and Morrigan.

Oh, and on a side note, Garrus and Alistair are the best bros of my Shepard and Grey Warden respectively.  Those who have such great characters.

Prior to launch one of the things I was most hopeful for was to see the format of the DA character relationships (LI and not) added to and expanded upon in ME2.  It was really a disappointment to see they did nothing to further the ME1 format past adding a loyalty mission.

I would still love to see it but don't expect them to make any large improvements in the way Shepard relates to his squadmates in ME3.  Seeing as how these are all BW properties I would have thought they would be sharing these types of advancements across titles but apparently that is not the way it works.

FemShep Options:

1. Thane
- Introspective, but not angsty; a professional killer, but an honest romantic; spiritual, but worldly. Dangerous but sensitive. These contrasts appeal to me and are a great foil for my Shepard. He has an amazing voice and a subtle sense of humor that will hit you out of nowhere if you're not watching for it. And I adored how he expresses concern and interest in Shepard's troubles. And he's hot.
"You have many burdens, siha. Remember that I'll help you carry them." = SOLD.

2. Garrus
- Awkward but adorkable. I don't like the way it starts out (the "blowing off steam" stuff) and that casual-(because-we-don't-want-to-admit-to-anything-else-just-yet) approach doesn't mesh with my Shepards, but I appreciate how the relationship is an evolution of friendship, and the culmination is very touching. Always good to have a snarky bro at your side, even if I prefer Garrus as a bro more than a romance.

3. Kaidan
- I used to give this guy grief. He's not the flashiest character and I found him to be incredibly dull for a long time, but over the months I've come to appreciate that side of him. He's solid and attractive in his own way.

4. Liara
- I'd say she ties with Kaidan now. I used to give her a lot of grief as well -- found her easy, default, shallow, etc, but I'm easier on her now. She has endeared me. I think there's subtlety to her character that hasn't been explored to its fullest, and the comics/etc have helped with that. She has potential.

5. Jacob
- Yeeeeaaaargh. Jacob, you're a great bro, but your romance is just... yeah... you say things and they just. Yeah.

So in terms of pacing I'd say:

Thane
-
Garrus
Kaidan/Liara
-
-
-
-
-
Jacob

ManShep Options:

I need to play through these. I've actually had trouble making up my mind as to whose I like better, which is a good thing. Jack's is the emotional one, Tali's is the awkward and adorable one, Miranda's is the eyecandy but still nuanced one... Ash was my ME1 favorite and I still love her character, so she may edge out first place, but overall I don't find any of them to be Jacob-esque "flops."

What I appreciate about all these romances, male or female, is that they each cater to a different taste. Variety is great.

Edit:

HomicidialFrog wrote...

3. Thane. I'm a straight male,
but I will admit that guy makes me question my sexuality. Only two
other men have had that effect on me: Mr. T and Dante from Devil May
Cry.

#1. Niftu Cal - The Biotic Volus GOD. Because <squee!> I love a man with biotics, and his CONFIDENCE is just so alluring. He said, "Fear me!" but my heart said, "Love him!" He's got such a hot figure, too. I just can't wait to get him out of the suit. Rawr!

FemShep I can't say, but I'd go with Liara, Thane or Garrus based on their characters/personalities.

Understand I'm only using Liara because I think her romance structure suffers the worst in ME1 due to the "let's insert codex into character dialogue" approach they used. I'm not attacking her character.

And I feel that the loyalty quests (especially if you actually HELP said person) go a long way to cementing the idea of an emotional bond forming between Shepard and said LI.
