Just downloaded Mass Effect 1 from Steam, installation went all the way through. Yet when I attempt to load the game, it crashes instantly saying, "Mass Effect has stopped working".

My system is more than capable of running ME, as I also play CoDMWF2, WoW, Fallout 3, L4D, Eve Online, Warhammer Online, pretty much whatever on Med-High settings.

Is there something I need to do to fix this? I haven't been able to get to the first screen, it instantly stops working about 5-10 seconds after I open the game. This really sucks

Same here, I downloaded it off of steam about a month ago and just went to play it tonight. L4D2 works fine. ME just shows launch screen then everything bails and I stay on the desktop.

What are your system specs?

Try going to the MassEffect1.exe file in the Binaries folder and choosing "Run as Administrator".

You know this is about Mass Effect 1 in the Mass Effect 1 support board, right?

Really though, it's on the default list of things to try whenever a game fails to launch, especially in Vista or 7. Especially since it takes about 8 seconds to try.
