At one point I noticed that there was a sliver of Renegade points being generated on my squad status screen, though I am 100% sure I did not make any Renegade decisions or take any such action. And in another, I was getting Renegade points for no reason (right before engaging in the first fight on the Purgatory prison ship)---I didn't select any hostile decision.
Has this happened to anyone else?
Is it impossible to avoid getting Renegade points?

Did you choose any lower wheel options? That usually causes renegade. You probably called out the warden for being a criminal.

There's a couple places where it seems renegade is pretty much guaranteed. Dunno why. (The Purgatory points are from walking past the guy getting beaten without saying anything, I believe.)

I think I do recall a lower option, though it was on the left side, so it shouldn't have affected anything. And besides, calling him a criminal should have given me Paragon points instead because it's the truth.

i'm actually very pleased with this decision by bioware although i was not at first. i had become too obsessed with being "the good guy". i would often choose to do things that didn't make sense for my character/playthrough simply because it was the "paragon" point way. once i realised i was getting some residual renegade points regardless, it freed me up to make more reasonable decisions. You can still be the "good guy", but when the galaxy gets ugly "ugly" decisions have to be made sometimes. who better to make those decisions than the "good guy"? the way i looked at it anyway.
