I've noticed that when I finish ME2, there's not character file like in ME1.  Is that normal?  Will I be able to import from a save for ME3?  I even tried letting the credits roll, but it didn't generate a character file.

Since you can keep on playing untile afetr the credits roll you will just import your last save file. just be sure you DON'T ERASE YOUR FILE!!!!
