anyone else here NEVER play as the default shepard? i never have. 30+ ME1 playthroughs, a few ME2 runs and ive nevers tried john shepard. i always make my male shepards look like me so i have all these shepards who look exactly the same. my point is its weird seeing john shepard all over the advertisements and on trailers and other people videos. whenever i think of ME i picture my shepard, not john shepard. its just kindof weird. most of the time im like, "what the hell? who the heck is that guy....oh yeah thats the default shepard."
anybody else have this problem?
john shepard......er not

30+ mass effect playthroughs? I'm embarrassed for you.

Yes. I've never customized the appearance, and one time I did take the default name.
I have the opposite problem when I see some videos on Youtube and stuff. "What the hell? That ain't Shepard"

Never used him. Or played Soldier, which is the default shep's class. The last thing I want to do in an RPG is play someone else's character. Making your own is most of the fun in these kind of games. Playing Sheploo would just turn it into a non-rpg shooter to me.

Mark Vanderloo is purdy...so no. Others just look strange to me.

On a slightly related note: I think male shepard default looks a lot better than female shepard default. I mean, he looks iconic, but she looks like a little girl. I think my female Shepard should be default, she looks very similar to Jane Shepard, without the incredibly small face...I find it jarring to see any Shepard but my own though, some people make characters that don't really seem to fit the voice.
Also, yeah, never played as the default.

I always play default male, I've yet to see a custom male shep that I liked.
Different strokes for different folks, I guess.

I was gonna mention that in my needlessly long post!generic username wrote...

When starting a male shep playthrough I feel cheap using the default and I have found that yes, making a custom male Shepard that doesn't look hideous is really tough!
Of course, I'm into girls...so yeah; definitely agree with different strokes for different folks.

Never used the default male shep. I prefer to customise the look.

I usually use the default face, but never use the default class, name (really, John? Boring...), or background choices.

I've only once used a default male Shep, changed the name to Adrian (to be the flipside to my distaff Adrienne Shepard... simply because I find the female faces easier to work with, and after 20 minutes of mucking about on my custom Adrian I gave up.
Because he's the most conventional Shep, it was only right to use him to romance Miranda

The only time I play a male Shepard is when I play my pure renegade character, and he is cool, confident, and in control of everything about him; his abilities, his ship, his minions (what he sees his squad as), his battlefields, and naturally, his appearance. That means clean shaven, which means that the default Shepard with his five o'clock shadow is a no go. When I make characters, I try to decide who they are and then custom fit their appearance to match their personalities.

I feel cheap using the default male Shep, but I agree that good looking male sheps are horrendously difficult to make. I usually give up and go back to Femshep.

you sure your not jealous? that doesnt even include the numerous times i started a game only to restart half way through because i noticed my nose looked a little too big while riding an elevator on noveria. its funny, when i pick my ME1 transfer shepard, i have like 4 pages to scroll through to find the shepard i want. they all have the name ryan, 75% or adepts, and 99% are paragons who saved wrex, the council and banged ashley. i do the same thing every time too. its rediculouse. thats how awesome ME1 is.
ive never had a problem making my male shepards. ive had alot of practice making the same face over and over so ive learned how not to make awkward looking males.
the easier thing to do is make a hot looking girl. ive made a few femsheps and they are all straight banging hot mommas.
