BioWare. Please consider this option.

Why can't Shepard just be nice to the people in his crew? It's not so much saying that he's a jerk, but it seems that attempting to be nice and encouraging to the opposite sex in your squad always translates to "I'm not really concerned about your problems, I would simply like to trigger a cutscene with you at an opportune time."

In my current playthrough, I decided to pursue a relationship with Miranda. That said, Tali and Jack are also on my squad. Tali and I are friends--good friends--so I make sure to encourage her. Jack has enough problems so I let her know that, hey, we can be friends and you can trust me.
So imagine my annoyance when Miranda and I are actually getting somewhere, and the other two are calling me a player.

What?

Heck no.

So consider this, BioWare.

Romance subplots should only be pursuable through "blue" or "red" dialogue.

What this allows is for you to pursue a better "friendship" with your other crew members while maintaining a "romance" with one (or two, should you so choose). This also means that, in order to build a relationship based on how you've leveled up your Paragon or Renegade bars. Depending on your "alignment," so to speak, you can choose to pursue that relationship as nice Shepard or "dirty" Shepard (particularly with Jack, seeing as there are clearly two options there).
Also, this way, the "Paramour" achievement actually means something.

Take this into account?

Intimidate? "Love me or I'll kill you?" very romantic.

i think bioware likes the idea that unless he's a utter ass to the women, he is just to darn smexy for them not to fall in love with him...

In-game terminology for "red" and "blue" dialogue. I was sure that was obvious.

Heh.

I think it'd be more along the lines of:
Tali: Is this crazy Shepard? I don't know...it's all just so new.
Shepard: [Renegade] Good! Embrace the fear...

As for the OP, I share your concerns about not just being able to be friends with them.
I guess the women are just naturally drawn to the sheer animal hiding inside of every Shepard.
Vice versa for FemSheps. Rawr.

i think there should be a "BFF" option in the convo tree.

so if you choose not to romance anyone, you can still choose one BFF to have exclusive dialog and activites with. best of all, your BFF could be any gender in your squad.

I lold.

Well. I guess "some girls like it rough" comes to mind.

These characters are all too undersexed. In the interim period between the events of Mass Effect 2 and 3, the characters should seriously get some action. Then they won't be jumping on the only person who ever comes to talk to them.

"I just don't know if this is the right career path for me. I don't think I have the right skillset to succeed as a media journalist."
"I think you'll do just fine, and you'll nail that interview."
"I'm glad you think so. May I ride your bone later?"

That's how every conversation feels. I'm sure Shepard just can't get anything else done anymore. Even krogan want to mate with him. I shudder to think of what happens if a female krogan joins your squad in ME3.

I like this. I wanted to be friends with Jack, because she seems pretty messed up inside, but wanted to either stay loyal or get with Tali. The game was like "hahaha no."

Darn.

Yeah I gotta agree. I don't like talking to a female character, just trying to get to know them, their back story, etc. and they're throwing themselves at me. Romances in "ME2" are way too easy to start.

I like this idea. It bugged me as well that I have to pretty much ignore the other LI's lest I'm labeled a cad (I've always wanted to use that word:P).

Tying the romances to blue or red dialogue options would let me be a friendly to the other LI's, without the game assuming I'm trying to initiate sexytimes with them, or my current <3 thinking I'm two-timing

This bugs me as well, having to completely jump out of character just to kill off any Ashley romance in ME1 was fairly annoying.

Hell I've barely even talked to Jack because she can't seem to shake the notion that I totally want to jump her bones.

I like the idea of it being separated that way, but I don't think it should be tied to your renegade/paragon bar. I mean, I play almost exclusively paragon, but what if I wanted to do something really forward/flirty/aggressive with my LI? Both options should be available for everyone.

I think I like the idea of the OP but to everyone complaining that they get suckered into a romance with every viable LI in ME2...

C'mon guys, just be neutral. If you're too nice with someone that can potentially like you you will invariably lead them on a little bit. With Jacob and Garrus I just kept it really formal, I figured "So you're single?" and "We could ease our stress" were big glaring "LETS DO IT" signs.

Just don't be so nice to em? I totally got a BFF vibe from Jacob after a while, complete with no awkward flirting and awesome handshakes "Let's spill drinks on the Citadel" gives me a warm fuzzy feeling. Even if I wanted to bone his ex-girlfriend...

What bugged me was how Jack assumed my Femshep had a thing for her just because I was checking in on her. Made me really dislike her character (expecially since, as usual with Jack, she was a b**** about it, and I didn't have an option to call her on it.)

I felt this way with Liara(ME1), Jacob, and Jack. As your just talking with them, finding out more about them, all of a sudden the only thing they can think about is sexytimes =\\ I especially hated letting Liara down hard...

What happened was people complained that so and so wasn't romanceable in ME1 or DA:O or etc. etc. So they added more LIs in ME2.

And now people complain that so and so shouldn't be romanceable and that they just wanna be friends. You can't please everyone.

And you can still talk with squadmates and stick to the neutral options to stop from getting caught in a romance. The trouble is that they don't have much convo aside from the romance ones so they just don't talk to you at all.

Haha.. To me it felt like she was directly speaking to my actual gay self. I didn't even want to pursue something with her in this game. Plus what she said about the 'girl's club' reminded me of that popular misguided notion that all gay people would do it with a person of their own sex at the drop of a hat, regardless of personal taste.

Yeah, totally kills that character for me that she refuses to speak to me anymore under the guise of such a stupid excuse.

Adding more love interests was the right way to solve the problem, but putting you in a situation where pursuing a romance with that character was the only way to get to know them or build any sort of rapport just seems unnatural and forced. Once you stop a romance subquest from happening right as it begins, they don't seem to want much to do with you.

Maybe tying the romance dialogue directly to your Paragon and Renegage meter might be a bit much, but maybe it's possible to have that red/blue dialogue independent of it?

I just think that Shepard should be a little more able to manage his relationships, romantic and otherwise. For a Commander, he's not very professional, particularly when he gets accused of two-timing. The option is either "I want you" or "I want everybody and I'll continue to lead you on." "No" isn't even an answer.

With Tali it's pretty clear what dialogue choice will trigger the romance subplot. Keep in mind that the bottom right option isn't always being a jerk.

With Miranda it's a little less clear in advance, but pretty clear after Shep says it. The game autosaves every time you get off the elevator.

Jack is the only one that insists Shepard wants in her pants no matter how many times he says that he's not interested.

It's been a while since I played my femShep, but Garrus's romance trigger is pretty obvious. I seem to recall that I avoided Jacob's without trouble, though I don't remember what it was. Don't know about Thane. I think he was the last character I recruited (apart from Legion, of course).

I wouldn't mind if they tied it to a blue or red dialogue, but I don't really think it's a big deal.

Yes, I'd be nice if the starting of a romance required sufficient paragon/renegade points. So if Shepard neutral to the boredom, like Jacob/Kaidan/Atton/Carth, no one will want to pursue a relationship with him. And some characters would only accept paragon/renegade romances since they see other option too boring/intimidating.

i just finished another femShep playthrough, and the only "romance" that was kinda forced was Garrus. With Jacob there were the options "I'm interested" and "i want to be your friend" (not 100%, but something like that). So it was pretty clear that one would result in a romance, the other in him letting loose with the drinks on the citadel.

Same for Thane, Options were "I want you" and "talk to the others" (again, not 100% what was presented in game).

Only with Garrus it alwas ended with "I had reach, she had Flexibility" and i was left standing with "we could ease tension together" and "Goodbye". No option to stop him from saying that over and over again.
