I'm sorry. I tried in ME1, I tried gain in ME2. I just can't do it.
Mark Meer's voice acting is just *too* detached, *too* casual. Like Jack would say if you'd tell her you are at Purgatory to rescue her: "You sound like a ****!"
Really, I'd love to play through ME with a male character, but after hearing Ms. Hale's voice acting, Mark Meer simply pales in comparison, and leaves me with a 'meh' feeling every time I give it a shot.
I'd love to see how the romances with Tali, Miranda and Jack work out, I guess I'll just have to look them up on YouTube. Then again, that won't have half the impact it should have.
Now, I'm not suggesting BioWare should replace Mark Meer as a VA. I'm quite aware that many people enjoy his voice a lot and can for some reason identify with his 'style', I just have to conclude it is *really* not for me.
Why I waste your time with this totally useless post? I just wanted to vent my frustration about it.
GRRRR!
Just.. can't... do it.

just skip past the conversations simple as that or enable subtitles and put his conversations on mute and if you want you can rp as the illusive man.

Both VA's have their flaws -
- Meer can be monotone at times
- Hale 's delivery is a bit too dramatic
I do enjoy both, but I personally prefer Meer's.

I too found his voice a tad to casual at times, mostly during the last few missions. If I were giving a speech, I'd try to put more emotion in my voice. But then again I'm not a voice actor.

That is a good suggestion, though 'no voice' may be still better than Mark Meer's voice (in my opinion), it still can't beat Hale.
As for being batman: I thought he was always secretive about that. Welp, good to know.

the casual voice fits in perfectly with a Renegade maleshep.

playing a Paragon maleshep, I can totally see why youd think Meers' voice to be blah.

Amusingly enough, I have the exact opposite problem.
My first playthrough was with maleShep, and every time I tried to go through as a femShep, I just have to stop playing somewhere around leaving the Citadel in ME1, or Freedom's Hope in ME2, her voice has WAY to much inflection, especially in places where she doesn't need it to be, to the point where it just gets silly.
Meer drops a few lines, I'll admit that, but overall, he sounds like default Shepard looks, so it works well enough for me, he gives off that grizzled soldiery tone, meanwhile, femShep is just all over the place in vocal tones, and either sounds bored with the situation, annoyed she has to be in this place, or seductive when she's doing business meetings, nothing really adds up correctly, and it just bugs me.

Hale (admittedly) can be quite dramatic, and at a few points in the game 'too dramatic', yes. For some reason that is *exactly* why I love her voice. There's emotion in her voice, and I can also imagine that not coming across on others as well as it was intended.

Here is what I do:
After playing Jennifer Hale, I bash my head repeatedly against the wall until I lose higher cognitive function and short term memory, and then when I go to play Mark Meer I can't even remember Jennifer Hale's voice anymore.

So uh, I found the cure for this a while ago. Mark Meer is totally awesome as renegade Shepard. Just watch the Shepard is a Jerk video on youtube. I think Hale can pull off both, but Meer sounds like he has more fun with the renegade lines, they totally pack much more believability than his paragon ones.
That said, both VAs are awesome, though Male Shep will always feel totally bizarre and even slightly non-cannon to me. I can play as him but it just feels wrong somehow...Like I'm transgendered.

the only problem with renegade shep (both male and female) is that the lines can be so corny sometimes.
"i thought you were dead shepard"
"i got better"
"why are you here?"
"maybe i just missed you"
cringe

"...but overall, he sounds like default Shepard looks"
*bites tongue for a moment, then gives up* wut? Bland?
Kidding aside, I can imagine the first choice for being male or female to be determining for many people. Especially if your second playthrough is with the same gender and you only start thinking about playing the other gender later on. You have an idea of the game, how the character *should* be, according to the very first impressions you get. Playing the opposite gender after you completed the game once or twice may just give the wrong 'feeling' because they're both so incredibly different in their VA.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not hating on Meer. Though *I* don't like it, I'm all for keeping his voice acting for I know that many people out there *DO* like his style. I just wish I'd be mor eflexible myself
