Here is what I do:

After playing Jennifer Hale, I bash my head repeatedly against the wall until I lose higher cognitive function and short term memory, and then when I go to play Mark Meer I can't even remember Jennifer Hale's voice anymore.

I LOL'd.

As for playing renegade... I may just give it one last shot and see how that works out. I admit I generally, especially through the tutorial and freedom's progess, I lean somewhat to the paragon or neutral convo options. Thanks for the tip!

I seem to be one of the few that prefer Hale as a renegade and Meer as a paragon.

Male Shep owns Fem Shep with the "jelly fish" line in ME1.

But I have to give it up to Hale for her delivery on a lot of great lines in ME2. The way she says "Charge!" to the biotic volus, the scene where you can tell the guy the building's about to blow, and of course Drunk Female Shepard is infinitely better than Drunk Male Shep.

But...you know...opinions. The internet. Yup.

Both seem pretty competent to me. I can link other videos like this that show just how girly Shep is too dramatic or calm, and vice-versa. Sometimes Jennifer Hale sounds like she's falling asleep.... and sometimes Mark Meer sounds like he forgets what's going on in the scene. Overall, though, they both do a fantastic job.

I see where you're coming from. I find his voice jarringly out of place sometimes. As if even though Shepard is in a life and death struggle for the fate of the universe he's being voiced by some guy who's on his third beer of the morning and who doesn't know what the word 'serious' means.

My shepard has no idea what the word serious means, so I thought his voice was about perfect. Not that I don't love Hale too.

I've tried playing Female Shepard in both ME and ME2...just don't like it. Hale is a wonderful voice actor, but her voice and delivery just don't fit the character at all. Meer might not be the greatest voice actor ever, but when I think Shepard, I couldn't imagine anyone else voicing him. It fits the character perfectly. The only issue I've had with it is when you meet up with Garrus in ME2. It doesn't sound right when he's all like, "Garrus! What are you doing here?" Just no, Shepard. Just no. Hale's delivery wasn't any better on that part, though...maybe it was just the line.

I think Meer's better for pure playthroughs. If you go full-tilt Paragon he sounds like what I imagine Superman's voice would sound like, only with more "aboot"-ing. Renegade, he sounds like that jerky rich kid we all know: dumb as paint, mean as hell and only got into college because he's a legacy. The problem here is that if you want to play both sides of the fence, mood whiplash is so vast that it breaks immersion.

You wanna go Paragade? You go Hale. She has a mastery of nuance, so if you're flinging Paragon and Renegade responses with reckless abandon, it still sounds like the same person. Both enteratin parts the other doesn't quite reach.

I like Mark Meer for my Shepard, it suits it for me, though I do agree at times I wish certain lines were said differently. Not as monotone or with more passion, for example when Garrus gets shot during his recruitment mission, I was expecting more concern for his old team mate but alas. It very well might not be Meer's fault in regards to how certain lines are delivered but that of BW.

Those are interesting sections. Meer does do a good job there. I'm actually a bit surprised they went with that take with Hale, it sounds like she was either running out of breath or starting to phlegm up a bit at the end there. Image IPB

I've always wondered how much the VAs are coached. I imagine there is someone there explaining the conditions of the scene to them, what's going on, how their voice should sound.

But to what extent do they do this? Do they hand them lines and say "read this", and only provide explanations if the VA has a question? I remember Yvonne Strahovski saying the order of lines she was given to read and the context could be confusing at times. I'd bet the same goes for the others.

I could see a VA easily interpreting or delivering a line differently than it should be simply because they don't have a full understanding of the context of the situation. If you take your emotional cues from the feel of the script alone you might be misled.

Now, I'm not suggesting BioWare should replace Mark Meer as a VA. I'm quite aware that many people enjoy his voice a lot and can for some reason identify with his 'style', I just have to conclude it is *really* not for me.

Maybe they just need to give him better cues.

Lines aren't recorded in any particular order. They don't run through the whole story from beginning to end, just as TV programmes aren't filmed from beginning to end. They work around the rest of the time (ie, writers, programmers etc) and sometimes actors can be recording bits whilst writers are still writer other elements of the story. If the writers decide they need to change something, there's the option of either re-recording the VO (thus meaning you need to pay your VA more) or hoping it meshes.

As for cues, they're verbal or written as prompts in the script.

I prefer Hale's delivery, and her voice seems to go with any femshep you make. I think Meer does pretty well, but I definitely agree that he does better with the renegade lines. I also think that his voice doesn't seem to fit with some looks for the maleshep, though I got lucky with my first maleshep in that his voice fits perfectly (though doesn't with the almost all of the others I've played with).

I like Meer's performance. Better than Hale, actually. While she's a great voice actor, she just doesn't fit the role so well for me - I honestly loved her role as Bastila in KotOR, but not so much as Shepard.

Meer does, from time to time, sound a bit emotionally disengaged or "bland", but I like most of his work. Renegade is better, sure, but he also has some great Paragon lines. And I like that he's not overly "flirty" with the potential romance options - sometimes I just want to talk to people, you know?

Though the latter is probably more of a director's mistake than the actors.

Well, like others have said, getting used to a shepard of the other gender is a little strange. In a way it's like getting used to a totally different character...It's hard to hear her say things a certain way when you're so used to the way your shepard would say those lines.

It's what happens to me with the way Meer delivers lines, I can just tell Hale would approach the delivery totally differently.

I've heard people say Hale is too emotional or nurturing in her paragon options. I feel in ME2 she has totally stepped up her 'hardened badass' game. The way she says everything is just brilliant imo. "Is this a volunteer mission or am I being volunteered?"

One time, I decided to give Manshep a try and happened to make a black Shepard. Could not make it through Eden Prime, laughing too hard.

He's improved a lot from ME1, but I admit I still mash X through a lot of his conversations. After playing Femshep twice and in the middle of a third on Insanity, I decided to give Manshep a go, mostly for the Talimance. I've heard he's pretty good there.

When I saw that video, I honestly couldn't stopped laughing, his voice acting is so poor that it's actually funny, especially as a Renegade:

After that I promised myself I would never try it.

The fact that you laughed is..Honestly, that's the point. Being renegade is supposed to be fun. And he makes such a good military jerk.

Haha, actually I have to say that I loved that line and I thought he delivered it perfectly!
