Being female I have always played female Shep but I have thought about trying Male Shep to see it but could never do it either. I started a game twice in ME1 and couldn't get past Eden Prime with him. There probably is something to your first play cementing your idea of who Shep is for you.

Where some think Meer's deadpan delivery is hilarious for Renegade. That's not what I want from Renegade.

Hale sounds truly mean and vicious as Renegade. I want emotion in my Renegade, more than in my Paragon. MY Renegade is hot head and that is what Hale delivers perfectly.

Paragon Meer is boring. It's pretty obvious he was way into his Renegade lines.

I play as ruthless Earthborne (no family) renegade and don't really care about squadmates' personal problems and family matters. Emotions like compassion and sorrow are unknown to my character. But I like to click on as much dialogue options as possible, out of sheer curiosity. And I hear too much compassion & regret in way too many "paragon" options, which is a bit annoying. Every such time I think, "Crap, they again printed this line in blue for Mr. Meer". Then I remind myself that most ME players are paragons and tell myself: "Suck it up and get over."

So here is the conclusion. Mark Meer's voice acting is very good, and it's just your perspective that bothers you.

I'm sorry. I tried in ME1, I tried gain in ME2. I just can't do it.
Mark Meer's voice acting is just *too* detached, *too* casual. Like Jack would say if you'd tell her you are at Purgatory to rescue her: "You sound like a ****!"

Really, I'd love to play through ME with a male character, but after hearing Ms. Hale's voice acting, Mark Meer simply pales in comparison, and leaves me with a 'meh' feeling every time I give it a shot.
I'd love to see how the romances with Tali, Miranda and Jack work out, I guess I'll just have to look them up on YouTube. Then again, that won't have half the impact it should have.

Now, I'm not suggesting BioWare should replace Mark Meer as a VA. I'm quite aware that many people enjoy his voice a lot and can for some reason identify with his 'style', I just have to conclude it is *really* not for me.

Why I waste your time with this totally useless post? I just wanted to vent my frustration about it.

GRRRR!

This isn't me being a troll, but I can't play a femShep because Hale sounds so... I don't know... bored Housewife about the whole thing?  Her complete tone of conversation is all about the relaxed inflection, there's never any eagerness in her work that actually makes me like the character, as opposed to her work with Bastila Shan.

Meers speech on the Collector base WAS alot better then Hales. I love Hale as much as the next guy, but I personally found Meer did alot better job in ME2 then Hale. I think it might have to do with the huge improvement he did, while Hale sounds the same.

You haven't played her enough then, she has way more emotion in her voice than Meer. That's what she usually gets ctiticized for by most detractors but thats what so many of us love about her is her ability to put some feeling into her work.

Watch her Renegade defense of Tali at her trial. No eagernesss?? Her renegade blows Meers away there.

Both got their ups and downs.
Meer sound more serious with "i have to save the galaxy roar", and hale seem more layed back.

Tho i got myself a good laugh with Hale drunk and telling a guy there is a bomb in the building (thanes loyalty mission). Great stuff. =P

As of ME2, Meer and Hale are both awesome. Anyone who says different is blinded by bias from ME1.

I thought he does a good job as both paragon/renegade. Except when he's talking to Morinth in Afterlife, he made me face palm.

What you all have to think about is that Meer is trying to do the Voice overs as a Military Officer. Not as Himself. If you have never been in the military you will not understand the speech mind set he is using. I have been in the military for over 10 years and was a military brat. So I understand why he is using a more monitone type speech. He is trying to pass opn only via word his confidence, command pressence, with a littel compation. To get an idea of what I am talking about go listen to some of the speeches of Genereal Dwieght D. Isenhower (Former President) and then compare that to a true renogade commander like General McAuther speech to congress about our military being in Asia. Then you might get a better understanding of why Military Officers speech is moniton for most of the time. Plus BIOWARE could not put all the littel suttel body languae cluse into each type of avatar as they would have liked.

Both VA's have their flaws -

- Hale 's delivery is a bit too dramatic

I do enjoy both, but I personally prefer Meer's.

He certainly can. But he's all right and I really like when he delivers his renegade lines. I'm not sure I feel the same way you do about Hale, but if I understand you correctly maybe I do. When she's shouting and yelling I really think she does a great job. But when she talks to people in normal fashion, it often feels like she tries too hard to sound cool or something. It annoys me a bit.

ehh, I'm not huge fan of fem shep voice. She can get little too excited at times. Male shep seems more laid back.

It may just be a matter of which one you play first. Being a guy who doesn't generally play as female characters, I started as a male Shep, and while I like Hale, Meer's voice is the default Mass Effect voice for me, and things that Hale does differently often sound strange to me.

For a similar reason I always play with the default Shepard face. Because if I create my own, it just looks wrong. It's not what Shepard looks like in my mind.

I even have trouble with the fact that I named one of my Sheps Jake instead of keeping it John. I'd change it in ME2 if I could.

Meer really stepped up his game for ME2. I actually like him better than Hale in this game. I think it helps that a lot of the Paragon responses in ME2 are actually a little tougher--less "Let's talk about feelings" and more "This is the nice way to beat your ass." It suits his style. Hale is still good, but I think they went in the wrong direction with her husky-lust voice whenever she's talking to one of the potential LIs.

Meer's voice is such a soldier's voice that it's painful to have him be anything else. He doesn't sound like an infiltrator or adept or engineer. If you play as a renegade soldier Meer is perfect, if you're a paragon soldier he's good but he still misses a lot of lines (especially in the romances).

Example: Meer butchered the "It's okay, come here" line in the Tali romance. He doesn't sound romantic when he says it...he sounds like a rapist! Come on Meer, pick up your game! Meanwhile in the Miranda "romance" (it's a fling not a romance) when he talks about not being in the Captain's Quarters he sounds natural and really into it. Perhaps Meer prefers Miranda to Tali and it just showed in his performance?

The best way to fix bad voice-acting in my opinion is to have the actors in the recording studio at the same time, actually acting out the dialogue. I know it's a scheduling nightmare, but it usually produces much better results.

This x100. I'm playing through ME1 again for a better import save and there's no comparison.

Mark Meer's voice is like the only voice that works with Vanilla Shepard. If you make your own Shepard, the voice doesn't match the face. All-in-all, Mark Meer's voice is good for those who play the game as it should be, with the Vanilla male Shepard.

First of all, he's not supposed to sound romantic, he's supposed to sound comforting and compassionate. And I for one think he delivered that line on the spot.

I guess we have differing opinions on what a comforting and compassionate voice sounds like.
