Example: Meer butchered the "It's okay, come here" line in the Tali romance. He doesn't sound romantic when he says it...he sounds like a rapist!

I was JUST about to post this! That was the most jarring moment of his voice acting for me (for both games). Normally I can take his more than occassional monotone lines, but that one got me. It wasn't even monotone it was just... out of place. Rapist-y, as you said. lol

First of all, he's not supposed to sound romantic, he's supposed to sound comforting and compassionate. And I for one think he delivered that line on the spot.

I guess we have differing opinions on what a comforting and compassionate voice sounds like.

I have edited my earlier post. I think I may have confused the dialogues here, sorry.

Mark Meer's voice is like the only voice that works with Vanilla Shepard. If you make your own Shepard, the voice doesn't match the face. All-in-all, Mark Meer's voice is good for those who play the game as it should be, with the Vanilla male Shepard.

There is no as it should be.
I hate people who say this. Don't you tell me the proper way to play.

Besides Sheploo looks like he should have a fake German accent and speak of "obeying orders" and "conzequences".

Thinking of when he hugged her in the Alarei? Because he got that one right... which makes me wonder why it sounded so horrible in the romance scene.

Yes, that's the one I was thinking of. Again, I'm sorry for the confusion.

I think he's much better than he was in ME1. I think they're both great actors.

I agree, the "It's OK, come here" was definately jarring. It's the only Meer line I can really remember being flat out wrong. That said, it's probably not Meer's fault. It's the producer's job to make sure this stuff is appropriate for the situation, and TBH the writers could probably have written a line that was less "insensitive daterapist" as well.

I think so too. Considering that he got the aforementioned Alarei line right, I call out the VA director on this one.

WTF!?

I never thought this thread to have more than 5 responses, if even. I really should turn off my email notifications for topics I start lmao.

Guess I brought this on myself. That's what I get for ranting.

A couple of points have been made that I agree with. Mark Meer fits only "IconShep", standard face, soldier. I have a habit of never keeping the 'standard' face. Never went ever with a standard face in any game unless I didn't have a choice, so his voice not fitting to any other male Shep makes sense.
Another point made about 'the first play through cementing one's perspective': I'm quite sure this may be the case.
I'm also quite sure that if BioWare put (even) more time and energy into the VA cues and direction both maleShep and femShep would be much better. Think it'd be possible to completely make the game, *then* do all the voice-overs actor-to-actor?

And the mention of my only problem being my own perspective: yes. True. That's what I said on the first page already.

I'm surprised this thread is keeping up this long, and I welcome all feedback still. Male Shep clearly has something many people like, and it seems not many people are 'still on the fence' or able to play both femShep and maleShep without regularly cringing at the voice.

We all have our favorites.

However FemShep is better by law written in stone in 343BC, anyone who disagrees will be struck by lightning.

I think sometimes he is too emotional, sometimes his voice is more reflective of what is being said and less of the overall context - the VA is good for the most part, could be better

He looks creepy, and his fake fluff goatee annoys me.
This isn't a criticism against Mark Vanderloo, he's attractive.. when he's not sporting that look anyway.

I agree with that thought. Meer really does fit VanderShep perfectly. But if you try making a black/asian/eskimo/whatever Shep his voice ... does not fit. Posted Image

He sounds fine. And I beg to differ on him only sounding good in the defaultshep. In reality, his voice only fits my Shep. Watching trailers and gameplay of the default shep before I got ME1, I just didn't like him because the voice didn't match the face. So I made a face to match the voice, and now it's perfect. I'm sure everyone else feels the same way about their Shep, except you of course, weirdo.

I'm a huge fan of Jennifer Hale and I love her work. But I just really don't like her as Femshep. It sounds too forced. It's obvious she's not using her natural range. Mark Meer just fits the bill better. He has to sound like that. If he sounded different, people would complain that he's either too nice sounding, too sarcastic, too mean, etc. They had to find a middle ground that can say both paragon and renegade lines convincingly enough without being too extreme either way. It's a tough thing to do, but they found the perfect VA for him.

Sorry that is the first time I have heard Meer called "too emotional".

Boring, flat, distant, monotonous, stale, stiff, and wooden but never emotional.

That's a matter of opinion honestly, personally I don't think Meer fits Sheploo at all, I've seen custom ManSheps who go far better with his voice.

Yes my opinion may be coloured because I expect Sheploo to go on about lebensraum or something, but no, there's a disconnect there.

Hehe. I think it depends on who you play first. I played through as femShep and the majority of the lines sound... I don't know. Like she was intentionally speaking in a deeper voice than she has, which lends a very slow and methodical reading of the lines. Like a woman trying to make her voice deeper than it is, making it sound unintentionally low and dopey.

Compare Hale's Shepard to her other work, Like Bastila or the British chick from Mercenaries, or Dr. Naomi from Metal Gear Solid. Maybe you'll see what I mean.

Not that I'm slamming anyone for liking Hale over Meer. I just found it funny that the same complaint Hale-fans voice about Meer is the complaint I have about Hale.

I totally disagree. I think Mark Meer overshadows Jennifer Hale in every way in the second game. I felt like she really just phoned this one in. She just sounds pissed all the time. And yes I've played through the game with both male and female Shepards. One specific example was Tali's trial. Mark's really sounds convincing, while Jennifer just does that deep voice, guttural thing she does througout the entire game.

Still love Jennifer Hale, though.

I wonder if there's a way to copy the paragon hug voice over to the scene where you're about to sleep together...

I'm constantly bemused as to why people expect a woman who's just come back from the dead to sound business as usual.

Probably because Meer does, but that's his/the director's flaw, not Hale's.

Personally I think the director should be fired. He or she is doing a great injustice to both Meer and Hale (the god damn Jacob dialog, auufhfghfd) and obviously having Meer be more monotonous than he should be. Something I feel Hale manages to overcome.

The problem here is they (the writers or the director) can't seem to decide whether Shepard is a blank slate, or his/her own character. Pick one damnit! You can't have both!

I can't play as a male Shepard either. Hale ruined the experience for me.

Meer's VO doesn't bother me in most cases, but it gets to me when he's trying to woo the ladies (which is the only reason I would play a male Shepard). He sounds uninterested and detached...like he's talking to Grunt instead of a woman he's interested in.
