Avalanche is my choice of heavy weapon. For reasons already discussed in this thread. The real reason I will use it sometimes is because I think it kinda looks like a proton pack from ghost busters. With the Umbra visor, you look like a space ghost buster.

All I know is that I hate the missile launcher.  It never goes where I want it to go...EVER.

Really like the grenade launcher and the particle beam. Helps with taking down scions and collectors and other shielded baddies

The Cain has been my least favorite/useful with the rocket launcher likely tied as well. The Avalanche being a cut above the others. It's just invaluable for destroying husks and aboms. The ammo capacity is fantastic as well and the rate of fire insane.

The missile launcher really annoys the hell out of me. It should be one of the best but it's so frakking unreliable. The projectiles just go where ever the hell they feel like. They should have at least let you direct exactly where they hit if you keep your crosshair on the target.

Have you read the description of the missile launcher.  It say that it tracks to the enemy that is the closest to you.  I'm guessing that that would be a straight line distance but as long as you know that your are aiming at the closest enemy you shouldn't have any problems with hitting.  It is probably the most used heavy weapon by me with the avalanche being second for defense stripping.  That said I tend to avoid using heavy weapons.

Cain is the equalizer. Its like a mid-mission reset button on Insanity+. Take for example N7: Blue Suns Base. This mission is lame for spawning you in a corner with 2 YMIR mechs in shooting range and then autosaving. If I don't have the Cain at 100% to make this fight a cinch I have to bug out one or both mechs by getting them stuck ontop of each other or stuck on a crate (doable with squad waypoints and tactical cloak to switch targets).

Then theres the crates mission. Saved 17 on Insanity+ since you can hit all 3x YMIRs right when they start moving. I reckon 18 or 19 is doable if you get upgraded before attempting the mission. No idea how you are supposed to get 20 though.

I dont bother researching heavy weapons anymore. The Collector beam will do more damage over time to the Big Bosses than the Cain on Insanity, and the Firestorm is great for Husk Swarms if you need it, both of which are free. Saves me Irridium for the more important upgrades, and is that much less time I need to spend harvesting (ugh.)

Arc Projector. Its ability to strip defenses from a single target is great; the ability to strip the defenses of a room full of targets in a single shot is fantastic. Plus it's available from the start.

Collector Beam is sometimes nice too for its precision and flexibility to be used at any range.

Taking down the Derelict Reaper core in a single shot makes the Cain invaluable on Insanity. People should stop knocking it.

i take the particle beam 90% of the time. i look at it like its a full auto, highly accurate assault rifle.

i used the cain once. now im scared of it. i sometimes carry it around just to scare people, but i havent fired it since the first time. it takes a really long time to get ammo for it too.

ive started to use the electro charge one and i like that one alot.

Arc Projector is fantastic on an Adept. Or any class for that matter, I suppose. But with Adept, throwing out a Singularity to slow a group, then removing their defenses (+ stunning) results in a bunch of bodies floating around... ripe for a Warp Detonation. Mmm.

Aside from that I like the Grenade Launcher. Cain is OK but using it honestly feels like cheating. Insanity is difficult but not, well, insane so you'd have to use it.

the avalanche is my favorite heavy weapon on insanity. It is especially useful at killing collectors on platforms, as they stay frozen (for a loong time) even if they are taken over by harbinger and can then be punched off. It also insta-kills husks and abominations. The cain is obviously more useful for killing the thresher maw, the final boss, and for saving the crates though. I used it to insta-kill the room after the biotic god on samara's recruitment which stopped the add spawns (or just killed them all).

If i'm not playing right I sometimes get messed up by flamethrower vorcha so it's nice to mess around with the firestorm and yell and stuff. works well on scions/husks

Black Storm Singularity Gun

Wide radius and slows things down. Plus they get sent to a toilet according to one commercial.

Haha, I'm going to always make sure that I flush the toilet in my cabin every time I get back to the Normandy from now on.

the Arc Projector is incredible, it can take down the defenses of an entire enemy squad making room for your powers. The amount of damage it does is also outstading.

.

My second choice in the granade launcher.

.

The Cain should be used in special situations. It really a bit different from other heavy weapons.

I like the cain and pretty much only the cain. It is the only heavy weapon that feels like a heavy weapon, low ammo, big boom. Everything else only has a marginal increase over my normal DPS if I pick the right weapon. On insanity it turns tough fights into easy fights. I have not played with the arc projector much, but my first couple shots were not that impressive.

1. Collector Particle Beam. Useful against almost every enemy and has a high ammo capacity.

2. Blackstorm Projector. Fantastic. Basically gives my non-adept characters a singularity, and a super powerful one at that.

3. Arc Projector. VERY useful against Husks. Also works well against robotic enemies.

4. Grenade Launcher. Decent ammo, and useful against large groups.

5. Firestorm. Fun to use on a Vanguard. Other classes not so much.

6. Cain. Never really used it, but devastates.

7. Missile Launcher. Not that powerful, and tracking isn't that good.

8. Avalanche. Useless for me. Most of my characters either have Cryo Blast or Cryo Ammo.

The Cain is the only heavy weapon that plays like a heavy weapon.  Most of the other heavy weapons are pretty modest improvements over your conventional weapons, and they lose the edge they have in the time required to switch to them.  Unless you commit to using a non-Cain heavy weapon for the entire fight, they aren't any better than your other guns.

The best of the rest is the Avalanche for the ammo capacity and great AoE.  The Arc Projector is also reasonably good in this regard; it's best on an Adept to rip off shields quickly so you can go nuts with your powers.  The limited ammo capacity is less of an issue on power-centered characters that aren't as dependent on pumping damage with their guns.

I don't have access to the blackstorm projector, but everything I've seen of it has it acting as a mini-Cain, which would make it pretty attractive.  I'd have to see how it performed against shielded foes to really judge though.

The flamethrower is good against husks.

That's absolute bollocks.

The Grenade launcher insta-kills husks on insanity. Not improvement? Use it on a group of mercs and there's a blast effect, giving you time to change the weapon when enemies are flying around.

Avalanche can immobilize a bunch of enemies very quickly for 45 seconds. Again, switching the weapon is a non-issue.

Arc Projector can take down a heavy mech's shield in three quick shots, a lot faster than any conventional weapon even with your weapon switching. It can also disable the shields of five regular enemies in about two seconds. Again, switching the weapon is a non-issue because you can start the fight with the Arc Projector and switch the weapon when the enemies are busy being buzzed by lightning.

Blackstorm can also be used in the beginning of a fight, and you can switch the weapon when the enemies are being pulled by singularity, unable to attack you.

If you think heavy weapons are not improvements over normal guns, you're not using them right.
