*POSSIBLE SPOILERS*

I'm having a very bad time with Arl Howe and his guards in the "Rescue the Queen" quest and YET I'm on easy mode.

When travelling to the Arl's palace in Denerim, I chose to take  the dog (why, I don't know- I guess to level him up a bit), Alistair, and Zevran- this is my first play-through. I'm a level 14 human warrior.

Unfortunately, on the way, we were intercepted on the way by the Crows and Zevran bailed because he didn't want to fight his friend. Understandable, but even when we arrived at the palace, he still had not returned to the party.

Due to the fact it would not let me return somewhere on the map to change my party, I was stuck with Alistair, my dog, and myself. I got through the guards fairly easy until I came across the room where Howe was. The guards, mage, and Howe SLAUGHTERED me.

Is there any possible way to beat him with these three characters (my char, Alistair, and the dog)? They're all lvl 14 and I REALLY don't want to go back to a previous save as the last MAIN save I made was nearly 20 hours before this one (all the automatic ones are already past the point of a possible party change). I am open to mods if you guys know of one that may help.

Please help if you can. This is truly aggravating me.

The game would indeed have allowed you to exit the area outside howe's estate, as I have decided to change my party before that mission.

Id suggest focusing the mages, then guards, and keep howe on Alistair and do him last. What class is your PC?

Also how does one go 20 hours without saving the game?

The problem with that encounter is the cut-scene makes it difficult to set up. As a suggestion, trigger the cut-scene, then micro-manage all three of you outside the room and into the hall. Use Alistair to block the doorway if he has been your main tank. Have his tactics set to use health poultices (smallest) at 50% health. If that doesn't work, then 75% health. Also set his tactics to annoy the bad guys (taunt etc). Don't worry about him doing damage. Use yourself and Dog to defeat any bad guys who get into the hallway. Do the softest targets first. Have Dog set to attack your target first, then mages second. If Dog has Overwhelm he can really do a number on mages.

If that doesn't work, try running away even further. The more you can stretch the villains out and buy yourself time, the better.

You don't have to have the companion in party for them to lvl up. They all share XP so you will only need to add them to your party temporarily to assign skill points, ect.

I typically have at least one mage in party for crowd control and/or healing. I don't think it's impossible for your party make up, but it is going to take a lot of healing potions and injury kits.

First off how do you have your warrior spec'd. Are they two handed fighter, sword and shield, duel weaponry, or archer. and what specialty lines have you chosen? (for both your character and Alistair.)

Try taking out the mages and archers first so they can't stun you. Avoid Howe till last if possible. (like I said, it will take a lot of potions without a mage in your party)

In all honesty though, I'd bite it and go back to your last hard save and lvl your party up till at a minimum of 18. If you don't want to go through the trouble of getting Zevran to like you, you will end up losing him at the encounter with the Crows. It is kinda unavoidable since the encounter forces you to have him in party for it. Just increase his approval rating to about 70+ and you shouldn't lose him. Definitely have a mage in party. Depending on how you build them, Morrigan is good for crowd control, and Wynne is a good healer. It is good to have a boat load of potion on hand an how.

Taking a breath and asking around was a wise thing to do... i noticed a few boss battles in DA that seemed out-of-proportion with other boss battles... personally i would have preferred if all the boss battles were as difficult as Howe, the Dragons, and that first Ogre encounter...  and Howe is very hard to kill... Alistair alone is no match for  him, and even 2 on 1 he's a tuf nut.
With that said, what to do...
Well, in other posts, it is the opinion of some that Warriors are underpowered in this game, which i consider a real shame since the focus of the Grey Wardens seems to be combat... so, anyway, you've got your work cut out for you (but i suppose you already knew that).
Initial thought on strategy, set all you party members 2 or 3 corner turns away and set them on Hold.  Move up one character who has the best spell resistance, and use him/her to open the door and then run like crazy back to your group... try to get the enemy to round the corner because the mages have ranged AoE (like fireball) that causes some confusion.  If you're having difficulty with a particular spell type, then use the appropriate Balms...  and traps may help too, but i have little experience with them...
As far as Mods goes, there is a Re-Specialization package that greatly improved my enjoyment of the game, and i use it primarily to fix the Mages to be more useful... And as a bit of a cheat, spells like Tempest & Inferno can be dropped over the wall...
But at your level, you may want to try bottle necking everyone in the doorway with your Tank and use crowd control spells like Cone of Cold, Mass Paralysis, Etc... and Fireball can be used to disrupt those enemy spell casters also... luck

You got there and you're only level 14. I think I was level 21.

And yes, you should have been able to turn around and leave as soon as you got there. I brought Leliana with me, only to have her replaced by Zevran as a result of that Crows encounter, so I immediately turned around to swap out Zev for Leli.

I think the lowest level I've done it was 15 or 16... it's certainly a harder fight at a low level. You never mentioned what type of character you're playing. Knowing that might help us advise you.

My best advice: First thing, turn right around and run out the door. When they come through, have Dog Overwhelm a mage, and kill it. Then kill the next mage, then the two guards, then Howe.

If you are REALLY having trouble, you can kinda cheese it (or any similar fight) by having Alistair Taunt, and run away. Just have him run as far away as you can, and when he gets there, run some more. Meanwhile Dog and your main char are killing the mages and the guards. When they're dead, Alistair brings Howe back and you kill him. He's really not that dangerous with the mages and guards dead.

I didn't even know you could get to that point at lvl 14. I've always been ~20 by then. I don't know what help I can offer, but you really shouldn't be going 20 hours (seriously?) without a hard save.

This isn't a particularly hard fight if you have a full party, but without CC/healing... I don't know other than trying to cheese the AI. If you think this is bad you're going to have loads of fun with the next boss encounter :P

Honestly, I think the 20-hour save was because I somehow deleted my own save when I was trying to delete another. /head desk Very annoyed with myself for that.

And yeah, I've done all the treaties and such and pretty much all my characters are at lvl 14 (I believe one or two are at 15).

Thanks for all the advice, guys. I really appreciate it.

As for my specs, Khalara, my character is specced for dual-wielding and Alistair's specced for sword and shield. Shield Bash and Pummel are INCREDIBLY helpful at times.

I think I'm going to try to get back again to see if my party at any possible chance can still change. If not, I'll try all your ideas, and if that indeed doesn't work because of my level, I'll just start from my older save, despite how long ago it was.

Thanks again everyone.

Did you never pick a lock or do a single side quest? That does seem low to be at the Landsmeet already.

No, I've picked quite a few locks and at least 50% of my side quests are done. I did a lot of them in Lothering and several of the Brecilian Forest ones as well...

You can level up everyone in camp. Just hit the 'c' for character screen and scroll through the party. The "Level Up" button will light up if they can be leveled up.

You were not nice to Zevran as I was alway able to get him to fight on my side.

The key to Howe and any tough fight with high level bosses and way too many minions are incapacitating spells such as Mass Paralyze, Cone of Cold, Petrify, etc. Cone of Cold is the most useful spell of the game as even the highest level bosses are susceptible to it.
