Any enemy would be forced to attack a relatively small area that could be more easily defended by a fleet. True, it's not a terribly original idea (e.g. cf castle gatehouses) but probably quite effective

Relatively small? It's HUGE. Remember how Sovereign attached itself to the Citadel Tower - and it looked like a tip on top of it. And the Tower itself looks very small compared to the hole itself. I bet you can parctically line up both Citadel and Arcturus Fleet on ring's perimeter and you would still have some space for a dozen Reapers.

Relatively small? It's HUGE.

Relative to size of the Citadel - you can concentrate all forces to defend the opening rather than a Citadel-sized sphere vulnerable to attack from any direction.

Yes, I often wondered about the hole in the back of the Citadel.
It's a massive weakness in their defenses.

But since the mass relay is placed near the other end, where the hole isn't, any attacking ships would have to "run the gauntlet" of all the ships patrolling the Citadel in order to reach the hole.

The end closes off too?
Does it have an iris (see Stargate for an explanation of that term)?
I'll have to check to see if I have a video of that and I can find a screenie showing that event.
