I admit my gaming experience isn't comprehensive; but the dialogue, story structure and voice work in DA is by far the best I've seen.

This is the only game I've played, in fact, whose dialogue never makes me cringe.

The writing is helped by the fact that the voice acting is uniformly perfect.

(I loved the Baldur's Gate games; but the dialogue was especially poor.)

Combine those things with the fact that the DA combat and skill systems, to me, are far superior the Dungeons and Dragons rigamarole to which Bioware had once been bound, and the result is the only RPG I've been happy to play through twice.

I'll vote for Planescape: Torment. Not much voice acting to compare, but what little there was was mostly very good. As for the writing, I don't think it's been beaten yet.

I feel I know P:T must be good, because I was rarely a fan of the original setting, so expected not to like it....

This game is certainly my fav for VA. I thought generally speaking DAO was excellent. (Although ME2 had some great VA as well, I just loved hearing President Bartlett as TIM.)

As for writing, IMHO the characters were very well written and incredibly interesting. The story certainly didn't win any originality points, but it was told in an interesting and immersive manner.

As for best story ever? Sheesh, that's gonna be so subjective from one person to the next. I loved the plot complexity from U7:2 Serpent Isle. LOVED that storyline with the different layers of history on serpent isle with its vastly different factions all at work, the world completely taking quite a change part way through with wildly different experiences on revisiting places. Of course I was 15 at the time and its impossible to divorce my nostalgia from that game so its just hard to say.

Voice acting, absolutely.

Characters and quality of dialogue...maybe. Planescape: Torment is very strong competition. I think the superlative voice acting may be making us think the lines are better than they really are.

The story is very good and effective but fairly simple, and I'm honestly a little tired of saving the world. So I wouldn't call it the best ever in that respect.

Yep.I did recently get a mod with its own voice over, but it sucks. Its quite obviously computer synthesized.I think theres a market here for voice overs in RPGs in particular.Need real people voices.Same goes for 3d animation movies which is already being done.Incredibles FTW!Image IPB

Well, I think so. A definite 'yes' on the acting. Some complain about a lack of originality in the story, but I would argue that almost all stories are based on the 'Hero's Journey' archetype, even those which purposefully subvert it. It's integral to human nature. 'Odysseus', every Joss Whedon project, 'Star Wars', 'Avatar'.... All the 'Hero's Journey....

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monomyth

This story subverts it to an extent, but I can't go into that in a non-spoiler forum.

Indeed for dialogue, characterisation, RP opportunities and all around writing nothing has yet beaten Planescape yet

Voice Acting in general for DA is pretty good. When you compare the voices individually, there are things that stand out, both bad and good. In my opinion, the thing that lacks most in DA is intensity. For the most part, the voices sound...flat.

Writing in DA is nothing too special. Someone earlier mentioned that DA comes from a 'basic' story, as with all stories in general. They derive from 6(?) basic tales. Pretty much every RPG has the same story and in order to stand out, I believe a writer has to deviate greatly from the basic stories (but still make it captivating) and make it into something unique. I don't see how DA has done that.

I belive Bioshock 1/2 are very strong competitors, although they are not an RPG they have one of the best plot twists and the voice acting is good. Especially Andrew Ryan.

Best writing in an RPG and Voice Acting... yes... but not the best story, it had it's moments but it wasn't the best, although the story itself is not the best, the way it is told and seen are very high quality.

Writing is pretty good.

Voice acting? I understand the direction they wanted to go with the accents the characters had, but personally I thought it was terrible. I really hated the voice acting. Not really even the voice acting, cause the actors did fine, but the feel of the setting was... meh. I wish they wouldn't have done it that way.

I loved the game though. Ranks after Planescape, BG Trilogy, and Mass Effect 1/2, but it's in good company. Thought it was a great game. Just really disliked bioware's direction they went with the voiceovers. Except Claudia Black. Yum.

Baldur's Gate (1 and 2 + both exp packs) has imo still the best story ever in a game.

I have to admit the voice acting in DA is very good. Nice cut scenes and such... tho you just press esc the next time you play it anyway...

I think that the voice acting and writing is very, VERY good.

But for me, I fell that Mass Effect 2 had some of the best voice acting and writing that I have seen in an RPG since Torment. I wish we could have Skull in this game. How cool would that be?

Everyone talking about Baldur's gate and Planescape. They surley must have been good, but for a person who like outstanding graphic combined with a solid story and plot DAO is the way to go. Would you really suggest playing Planescape as of today?

Voice acting? Yah, the best voice acting I've heard in a video game. But I havn't played many games where the voice acting was any good though... plus... the number of video games I have played is in the double digits... so that really isn't much compared to the number of games out there. The voice acting was worlds better than any made for T.V. movie acting I've ever seen/heard.

Best RPG writing? I really don't know...

The voice acting is hands-down the best. As another poster suggested, I think the voice actors make the writers look good. The dialogue itself doesn't exactly ooze personality, but it's really brought to life by the amazing actors. Alistair is possibly the best voiced video game character ever.

The writing wasn't bad by any means. However, the plot, characters, and dialogue are all, for the most part, pretty conventional. Aside from a few hilarious lines, nothing really wowed me. The writing was certainly top-notch, but fell well short of "best ever" for me.

That is a big no on both accounts, though I do place both in the top 10.

Yeah, this is an important point -- writing and dialogue are one thing and the actual story is another.  I agree that the story doesn't stand out the way the actual writing does -- I don't actually expect much story innovation in any fantasy, frankly -- but I do think it's more compelling and well-thought-out than, say, the Baldur's Gate series.

That's arguable, of course; but I don't think it's arguable that the writing and dialogue in DA is light-years ahead of almost all other RPGs (including Baldur's Gate, which sounded like it was written by sniggering teenagers)
