I don't know if this has been discussed or not, but I was playing ME2 today on my 3rd playthrough and I had a thought.  I started to notice there seems to be a recurring pattern of different groups trying to build some type of "perfect" specimen at the costs of innocents.  When recruiting Grunt we see they are trying to build the perfect Krogan and there are alot of failures left for dead or being used as an army.  During the Professor's loyalty quest we see lots of dead specimens from where the Krogans are trying to cure the genophase.  Jack's whole story seems to involve failed experiments while trying to create the ultimate biotic.  There are lots of failed test experiments in ME1 as well.  Here is where I'm going with this.  What if the Human Reaper you battle at the end of the Suicide Mission is just another failure.  What if the Reapers had already discarded it and had no plans for it.  What if it was just a step to completing the "perfect" Human Reaper and what if the Illusive Man is the final perfect Human Reaper?  Now you might ask, if he was a Reaper why would he want to bring Shepard back?  We know this cycle of destruction has been going on for millions of years.  What if the Reapers finally found a worthy opponent?  Think of the Joker and Batman.  The Joker would be bored without Batman and would not want him dead.  The Reapers finally have a worthy opponent to bring some excitement into the destruction civilization.  I know I may be way off here, but I thought of it while playing and thought it sounded good so I thought I'd throw it out there.  Bash away!!!!!!!!!

If it were a discarded reaper, then why continue to feed it humans?

However, it's an interesting theory.

Interesting theory, but unlikely.

So you're saying the Illusive man is a giant sentient spaceship who resurrects the only person who can stop him for sport?

Riiiiight.

Actually, he only makes Shepard THINK he's resurrected. It's kind of a Matrix thing.

Or maybe a Dallas thing.

Or maybe a Spiderman retcon thing.
