I have the disc-version of Mass Effect 2. I've installed the new 1.01 patch that came out today.
As soon as I hit 'Play' in the initial screen
Here is my system:
Processor: Intel® Core2 Quad CPU Q9650 @ 3.00GHz
Clock Speed: 2999 MhZ Physical memory: 4 GB
display Adapter: ATI Radeon HD 4870 X2 VRam: 1 GB
Sound adapter: Speakers (Creative SB X-Fi)
Driver Version: 6.0.1.1347
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium (6.1.7600)
Direct X Version: DirectX 10.0 (Mar2009) or later
Detailed Description of problem:
As soon as I hit the 'Play' button on the initial screen, after loading for 2 or 3 seconds, I get a black screen and error message 'Mass Effect2 has stopped working'.
I've uninstalled ME2 and re-installed it, i've installed the latest ATI Drivers, updated the BIOS to the latest version,
etc. All video settings are set to default in the configuration utility. The resolution is 1920x1200, 16:10 Widescreen.
UAC is disabled.
Please note that all other games run fine, I've played Dragon Age, Aion, King's Bounty Amored Princess etc with no problems at all.
Any help is greatly appreciated, I really would love to start playing the game...
cannot start Mass Effect 2 at all

**EDIT**
Okay so I fixed my problem. Apparently I think it had something to do with my save file(?). After I posted here I did some more deep searching and found people that were explaining fixes that had to do with save files, etc. So I moved my character save folder out of the Mass Effect 2 save folder. I booted the sucker up and it let me play - no "Mass Effect 2 has encountered an error." I put the save folder back in the Mass Effect 2 save directory and tried to play - nope - got the Windows error. So I have no clue.
Oh well. I got rid of that character save folder and just restarted (I wanted to anyway, luckily) a new guy, and all is well so far.
------------
Um, I don't have an answer for you (unfortunately), but I just want to chime in and say I just encountered the same exact error. The weird thing is I have already logged more than 16 hours on the game. I took a little break, installed some other games I had, played those and finally felt like coming back, but now I get this error.
AMD Athlon X2 2.00GHz
Physical mem: 3 GB
Display: NVIDIA 9600M GT -- VRam: 512mb
Again, note that with those specs I have logged more than 16 hours on the game with absolutely no trouble at all - until now. Weird.
And I too would love to start playing the game... again.

I am having the same issue just installed the game and put the patch and all the DLC to it. Then windows pops up to tell me "Mass Effect 2 has stopped working HA" and I have to close the program. Anyone have a solution for this yet or some kind of work around?
Ok so it didn't say HA but it may as well have :innocent:
processor AMD Phenom 9500 Quad-Core Processor
clock speed 2193 MHz
RAM 3.25 GB
ATI Radeon HD 5700 Series
Speakers (High Definition Audio Device)

Same issue. Set to default resolution black screen indicating an attempt at a load comes up but then the monitor flashes and I am prompted with "Mass effect 2 has stopped working." When i try to up the resolution to my monitor's native size (1680x1050) I no longer have the black loading/flickering and instead it just brings up the crash message.

Finally got it to work. From what I saw from other forums the instillation was the problem. During the install it popped my second cd drive to ask for disk 2. So when I tried to run the game it wouldn't work. I uninstalled the game and then installed it again with each disk in both my cd drives so the instillation wouldn't stop. Game works fine now. I suggest downloading from steam or ea download manager to have it install all in one take.

When you realized that you bought the wrong laptop (and the wrong game), that ended up making this particular query of yours irrelevant. Sorry, but you should be less impulsive, and more cautious, when making purchases.

Impulsive? I don't follow. As for the laptop, the spec's were what I was looking for. I searched, around compared prices and stats and finally settled on what I wanted. I didn't just run out and buy the first thing I saw.
As for the game, I check the min and recommend requirements, saw I exceeded all of them and purchased the game.
It just so happens that this particular video card does not support this particular game and I am labeled as, impulsive.
I appreciate your response, but would really like to know why you consider me... impulsive.

The conservative approach to shoppinfg is to decide how you plan to use something before buying it, and then make sure your prospective purchase is able to do so. Even Intel itself is willing to list for you the extensive list of games their junk video cannot handle. All over the 'Net, the shortcomings of everything Intel has ever done with video is readily accessible.
Games such as this require the real thing. Intel is a featherweight that doesn't play in the same league with the pros.

The issue itself can't all be pinned on this laptop. I'm running Windows XP on my desktop and am encountering the same issues at the "Press Any Key" menu. It seems most others have already cited the old save games as a problem, so we ought to stay on task and try and find a work around.

Laptops aren't for gaming. Intel video chips aren't for gaming. Together, it's a lockout.

I played and beat this game on the highest settings on my overclocked Core i7 system. I then had to re-install windows, and got this same error with all my save games. Now I seem to have no choice but to discard my save games and start from scratch. I tried re-downloading and installing the game from Impulse twice already, with the same fail result. Sooo pissed!
