Colonist/Sole Survivor. She's a total angst machine!
I was kind of surprised we got no mention at all about Sole Survivor. Come on, Shepard has nothing to say about that? Heck, every other person weighed in on it in the first one.
Random Stranger: Hey, Commander Shepard! I've heard about you!
Shepard: Yeah, first human Spectre and all that...
Random Stranger: What? Actually, I was talking about AKUZE! Remember AKUZE???

Heh that's funny forgot about Paragon/Renegade, my spacer/ruthless/infiltrator is a Paragon because people wouldn't expect that the guy who is said to be an **** is such a nice guy.
/highfive
Earth-born, Ruthless, but mostly Paragon. I'm weird like that. But really I find the whole "once a hero always a hero" thing to be a bit boring.
Basically the idea is that his rough life growing up on earth left him with a jaded outlook, and being used to doing whatever was necessary to survive. But the events of Torfan change his perspective, and he vowed to never again repeat that mistake.
/fistbump to you both
My Shepard is earthborn and ruthless but plays mostly paragon. Gang life was hard and it sucked but she knew how to get things done and survive. She realizes the cost of getting things done no matter what now. She intends to do better.

My main Shepard is Colonist/Sole Survivor so she can be as mentally f*cked up as humanly possible. Paragon/Vanguard too.

I used to go Spacer and War Hero... Then I tried Spacer Sole Survivor, and a week back or so I first tried out Spacer Ruthless.... (Always go Spacer, no changing that)... and I came to the conclusion that I like Spacer, Ruthless best.
Keep in mind I play purely Paragon and Paragon/Neutral characters. War Hero seems way too 'stereotype hero' for me, sole survivor doesn't really gain you any sort of reputation and there's just something I don't like about it... and then there is Ruthless... Obviously a good choice for renegade characters, but I like to pick it so you might be missjudged as 'cold' and 'calculating'. I don't mind being called those two qualities and I suppose they suit my Shepards... then there is something about screwing up a mission badly that there was no other option of having most of your squad die that makes it feel dramatic.

Male: Earthborn, War hero
Female: Colonist, Ruthless
I really wish they would put the medal for war hero beside the one for the citadel attack (the one you click to access your acheivements

Earthborn sole survivor. My Shepard has abandonment issues.
It's how I justify getting so attached to my crewmates and not wanting to lose any of them, emotionally or physically.
My Shepard is the same way. He's very attached to his crew (Like Captain Mal is from Firefly)
Since so little is known about what happened on Akuze, there's great role-playing room. I like to think that the reason why details for what happened on Akuze are so scarce is because Shepard refuses to go into it. Sure, he'll answer any question someone might have, but the answer will be vague and generalized, a sort of "Showing everything, but sharing nothing".
In my Shepard's past, his philosophy for surviving traumatic experiences boils down to "Down think. Don't feel. Just move." He numbs himself and refuses to let fear or anger rule his actions.
However, there was a moment on Akuze where he had a vantage point viewing the entire slaughter of his unit. Something in him snapped, and he flew down in a rage, took up a heavy weapon and nuked a thresher maw into fleshy bits. But a few survivors that had teamed up with him before were left alone, and became thresher chow as soon as he broke formation. He was their commanding officer, their deaths were on his hands and that's eaten him up inside for years.
I also like think that Cerberus experimented on some of the dead bodies of the marines, which is why they were delighted to find Corporal Toobs alive and well, so they could further their experiments. Shepard was not amused.

Colonist Ruthless. Seems like the type that would pique Nihilus' interest when looking for a Spectre.
Those damn dirty Batarians have got to pay.
Start off as a Renegade and start to shift to Paragon about halfway until ending up a Paragade by the end.

Leaving a trail of dead Batarians.
This.
I think they make a very good combination - the Colonist background is what drove my Shepard to kill so many batarians on Torfan. THEY KILLED MY FAMILY.
