Colonist War Hero for male shep.
Having all his friends and family killed by batarian slavers gave him plenty of motivation to hold the line in Elysium. He saw he had the chance to prevent the horrors of Mindoir from being inflicted on Eylsium and took it and in the process got some much needed payback. He's a guy who has embraced the creed of "standing watch so others may sleep at night". He's got no problem facing the worst the galaxy has to throw at him if it means others can have a normal life.
I also see him as an infiltrator, because when I think "lone soldier holding off waves of enemies" I think sniper.
Earthborn Sole Survivor for fem shep.
The gangs gave her a form of stability growing up, but a major falling out with them forced her to find refugee by joining the military where she found an even better surrogate family than the gangs. Losing this family on Acuze effected her deeply. She no longer fears death herself, but fears people dying under her command. I see her as one of the biotic classes, like vanguard, because none of the other classes give me that sense of being able to survive 'giant hell worm attack' quite like having Jedi powers.

Fast forward a couple of years. Healing from her loses, Shepard joins the Alliance, wanting to be like the heroes who saved her. Her skills were impressive, her combat scores breaking every kind of record, and her ability to lead were noted early. Still, the brass were weary of advancing her, knowing too well how deep some scars can go, hiding but never gone. After a short tour meant more to ease colonists' worries than anything else, she took her shore leave on a pleasant, safe colony on the world of Elysium. She went to a bar, got tipsy, and the Blitz happened.
As slavers descended and began to wipe out the local regiments, All Shepard could do was stare on, panic setting in from her earlier experiences. Mind blank, she would have died standing outside that bar had some little girl not run right into her. Shepard looked down at her, saw her eyes, the same eyes she had years ago on Mindoir. The wound from that had never completely healed; seeing this scared young girl and realizing that everyone on Elysium was about to suffer what she did, Shepard finally, forcefully closed that wound forever.
When the Alliance military came, what they found were the remains of the ground forces there, the colony in flames, slavers by the scores, and over three fourths of the colonists still alive and safe, the one route to them covered by a lone, injuries woman with a legion of dead slavers at her feet. She was shot, burned, suffering from over a dozen broken bones and had a miniature army against armed with every kind of ordinance, but she held them back.
The Alliance leadership awarded her the highest honor they could, used her at the model that all recruits should aspire to, and gave her the highest rank that she was qualified. From that day forward, Shepard was considered one the greatest heroes in all human space. And as one Captain Anderson looked over a list of personal to request for his new crew, a crew that would leave on a mission that would determine the fate of the whole galaxy, one name in particular caught his eye...

Earthborn War Hero. Being an orphan who grew up in a street gang is perfect for a streetwise rogue. Saving Elysium while on shore leave during the Skyllian Blitz is the perfect unbelievable tale for a swashbuckler who makes a career out of beating impossible odds.
Man, that joke really got in your head, didn't it?

My main Shepard is a colonist. Growing up wasn't always easy and she wasn't always the easiest child to raise, but her life was happy. That changed when the slavers attacked. Her father, mother, younger brother, two sisters, her friends, everything was burned to the ground around her. All she could do was hide among the ashes of her former life, terrified of what was going to happen to her. When an Alliance soldier finally found her, she thought he was an angel.

I don't like the old "orfan" background, but I really wanted a character who was born on Earth.
Anyway, I think the best background/military career matches are:
Earthborn / Sole Survivor: You always had to look out for himself back on Earth. Those days where you had no one else but your own instincts to trust are what gave you a chance to survive on Akuze.
Colonist / War Hero: After the tragedy on Midoir, when you lost your family and was saved by an Alliance patrol, you sworn to yourself to not let anyone else feel what you have. You joined the Alliance military and when was stationed on Elysium you remembered what happened to your family and decided that that day those slaver bastards would have their payback...
Spacer / Ruthless: Born in a military family, your parents always teach you the value of duty. However, because of you constant moving from one station to another, you have never developed deep friendships and wasn't too much attached to other people. Once enlisted in the Alliance, you never felt it was "hard" to you to make "hard" decisions, always aiming to do the job, no matter the costs. The raid on Torfan, an uncessary bloodsheed for some, was just "another job" for you.

My male Paragon Vanguard is Colonist/Sole Survivor. He's lived a tragic life and has seen too many people around him die. First it was his friends and family on Mindoir, and then his entire unit on Akuze. When he met Ashley on Eden Prime, he understood what she was going through, having just seen her own unit slaughtered by the geth. Having to sacrifice Kaidan on Virmire was yet another blow to Shepard's already fragile state, but Ashley was there to help him through it and focus on stopping Saren. During the Battle of the Citadel, he had the Alliance save the Council, believing the Alliance would be stronger with the Council than without them.
My female Paragon Infiltrator is Earthborn/War Hero. She never knew her parents, and had a pretty rough childhood filled with violence, drugs, etc. She decided the only way she could salvage her life and make something worthwhile out of it was to join the Alliance Military. When she fought off the attack on Elysium, she was hailed as a hero, but she felt that she was only doing her duty as a soldier. She was still kind of harsh in dealing with others, and a little solitary, until she started to get to know Kaidan. His gentle nature was the exact opposite of pretty much every other man she'd ever known in her life, and he was able to get her to open up, which also led to her becoming friendlier with the rest of the crew. In the past, something like leaving Ashley on Virmire would have just been another tactical decision for Shepard, but by then she'd become friends with the Chief, and was devastated when she had to leave Ash behind. During the Battle of the Citadel, she ordered the Alliance to hang back and sacrifice the Council so that they would be at full strength when they attacked Sovereign.
My male Renegade Soldier (Vanguard in ME2) is Spacer/Ruthless. His parents both served in the Alliance Navy, but his father was killed in the First Contact War, when Shepard was just a toddler. Because of this he grew up never really knowing his father, which created some heavy resentment towards the turians, and aliens in general. With his father dead and his mother often too busy to spend much time with him, Shepard grew up to be a very emotionally detached man. He followed in his parents' footsteps and joined the Alliance Military, and made a name for himself as someone who was willing to do whatever it took to get the job done when he sacrificed most of his unit on Torfan to wipe out the batarian pirates. During the Battle of the Citadel, he sacrificed the Council because he felt that humanity should not entrust its safety and security to aliens.
My female Renegade Adept (Sentinel in ME2) is Colonist/Ruthless. When her home on Mindoir was destroyed, she developed an intense hatred for batarians. When she was rescued by the Alliance, she joined the military, since there was nowhere else for her to go. She finally got her opportunity for vengeance when the Alliance attacked Torfan, and she took full advantage of it. During the Battle of the Citadel, she saved the Council in order to preserve galactic stability. With the Council dead, chaos would have followed in their wake, which would have made the rest of the galaxy weaker at a time when it should be fortifying itself.

They go together real well in story for your family and friends died by Batarian slavers and as the hero you save a human colony from Batarian slavers. Makes me feal like if I was Shepard that I did my family proud for protecting the innocent people from having to experiance that pain.
Emotionaly feeling like I redeem myself for not being able to protect the ones I loved when I was young. Kind like Batman.

Colonist War Hero Paragon Vanguard: "The Velvet sheathed Iron Gauntlet" Pirate slavers killed everyone she knew, never again. Not one more life with be lost that she can prevent.
Earthborn Sole Survivor Paragon/Renegade mix Infiltrator: "Professional Cynic" Everyone dies, she's seen it all her life. Some she ended herself, others not. Which end of fates scope will you end up on?

War Hero - Shepard matures a bit in his time with the Alliance, looks to put his past behind him and does so in a defining moment where he steps up and uses his gifts to save the colony of Elysium. Has become a "guardian" of the galaxy ever since.
"Outlook" - he's the kind of guy that tries to save as many people as possible, but also realizes where sacrifices have to be made and has the stones to make a harsh decision. Speak softly/carry a big stick kind of person.

I'm trying Spacer/Ruthless, ( but I'm hesitating a bit ), so, on to my question, is that the best background to get an equal amount, ( or close to ), Paragon and Renegade points?
Colonist/Sole Survivor gives equal amount.
Here is how it works
- Spacer/War Hero= 20 Paragon
- Colonist/War Hero= 15 Paragon
- Earthborn/War Hero= 10 Paragon
- Spacer/Sole Survivor= 15 Paragon, 5 Renegade
- Colonist/Sole Survivor= 10 Paragon, 10 Renegade
- Earthborn/Sole Survivor= 5 Paragon, 15 Renegade
- Spacer/Ruthless= 10 Renegade
- Colonist/Ruthless= 15 Renegade
- Earthborn/Ruthless= 20 Renegade

This is his story -
A pregnant woman flying around warships that have a habit of taking damage and occasionally spilling eezo all over the place can cause funny things to happen to an unborn child. Fortunately for Shephard, he was spared the risks of the haphazard and downright dangerous practices of companies like Conatex looking to make a profit on the recently discovered 'biotic' phenomenon, and so his special talents remained unknown and undeveloped until well after the development of L3 implants. He took to biotics training naturally, something which caught the eyes of military recruiters. Wanting to follow in his parents' footsteps, and to serve the Alliance, he volunteered (the hefty sign-on bonus for biotic candidates helped out too).
He was marked as an above average recruit, if a bit on the idealistic side. At the time however, nobody believed this raw recruit would be anything truly exceptional. Shortly after gaining his commission as an officer he was deployed to Akuze, which had dropped out of contact, a young lieutenant placed in charge of a unit of 50 men. He did everything right, his execution was flawless, but he didn't train for what came that night. Thresher Maws, massive abominations ripped through the main camp while Shephard was leading a perimeter patrol. The main garrison was wiped out within the span of a few heartbeats, he wanted to help them but gave the only order he could: "Run." His squad moved out quickly, sending a signal for evac, but the Threshers caught up with them. Isolated, his men fought bravely against the abominations, but they were no match.
All around him, the screams of dying marines filled the night sky, underscored by automatic weapons fire. His body was swathed in a violet aura as he struggled to shield his men and push back the creatures with a combination of biotics and gunfire. As the man next to him was pulled under he grabbed him, a young Corporal named Toombs, begging for his life. He saw the look in his eyes as Shephard lost his grip on Toombs, his body vanishing beneath the sands, dragged under by a massive, sharp claw. In a combination of desperation and despair, he unleashed one final biotic display, a massive energy field causing the Maws surrounding him to shriek in pain, and Shephard himself finally succumbing to the black.
He awoke to a blue sky, an alien sun nearly blinding him as he gazed up alone, a flicker in the distance as a small shuttle slowly descended. His body too weak to move as the ship grew larger and larger, blotting out all light. Some called him a hero, others called him a liar and a coward, one even managed to force him to stand trial as the events in his report couldn't possibly have happened and allowed him to survive. However, he was eventually exhonerated and came to be hailed as a symbol of the tenacity of the Marine Corps. For all that however, if anybody got to know him well enough for him to tell the story, he would call it simply luck. However, among the collection of service records laid out on the table, there is only one that Admiral Hackett, Ambassador Udina, and Captain Anderson could all agree had what it took to represent humanity in the most elite fighting force in the galaxy.
Maybe I'll post the rest of the story if people like the above.
