While I do agree any publicity is publicity, half of advertising is letting the world know your there; there is ineveitably consequences - be it your net sales, law suits, or as mentioned - distribution channels picking up your product.

Lets take a look at arguably one of the more controversial studios - Rockstar.  Their ratings did ineviatably force lawsuits and many retailers to stop shelving San Andreas.  Not so much because of the ratings, the ratings did reflect content in the game.  Its what would be known as artifacts, coding left in during retail release that was easily modified back into the core game.  Retailers are largely pulled by the media, Walmart for example.

Now, theres more to the story then just the 2 sentence overview; sure.  The bottom line is Rockstar and their failure (intentional or not) to abide by the ESRB - followed by the media frenzy absolutely did effect the net profit on that product.

Now, don't take fact for opinion.  I think Americans as a whole are often hypocritical as we as parents often shelter our children from our own experiences and influence.

EDIT: Sorry, just had to.
I would suspect Dragon Age's rating is based more on the violence/themes than the sex & nudity in it.

Orhgen would hit that.

Orhgen struck me as the kind of guy who doesn't care as long as they have two legs (assuming he is drunk which is most likely).

Ok I don't know what exactly is meant by partial nudity. To be honest complete nudity does not offend me but I was just wondering what it means. Its so vague, I mean I bought the game and I love it, but it just makes me wonder what they mean.
So do the mean that you see your romance in a bra etc. or are they topless?
Well you see what I'm getting at. Can some one please answer that question?

P.S. Imo they got too much crap for in ME1 for the "sex" and they reall whimped out on it in ME2....please don't do that for ME3, ruins the romance scene if its like 5 seconds long -.-  *sigh*

Welcome to America and our extrmeley conservative cultural bias toward sexuality.  Anything in america with less than a full clothed female body is considered partial taboo and thusly a partial nudity tag gets slapped n it.

Also before WW2.  Nudity in pre-war films wasn't terribly uncommon.

Never seen any films b4 the 60's lol, cept for some stuff mixed in with a modern documentary for my history A level lol.

To bring in another point, heavy rains rolled on out and it hasnt really received any bad press about its nude bits as far as I know, neither did the saboteur (published by EA) so im just getting the vibe thats its bioware's choice not to, so they give the tools out for the community to, fair play imo.

As someone else said, including nudity would have led to an Adult Only rating in the US and Canada, which is a game killer. For better or worse video games are still seen as entertainment for children, primarily, meaning nudity is out in North America.

On the other hand, graphic violence is out in most of Europe. Do we really need to get into an argument about whose censorship is more logical and fair? A lot of people think censoring nudity is dumb. A lot of other people think censoring graphic violence is dumb. Others think censoring anything is dumb. I don't see the need to be all "OMG stupid American ultra-right-wing conservatives are ruinnnnning my gamez!"

Is it?
England's very relaxed, and I can't remember the last time a game was censored for release here.
After all, we are the home of at least two Rockstar studios.

It varies from country to country. Maybe I shouldn't have said "most" of Europe since I haven't lived in very many European countries, but my point is more that the attitudes are different. See the knife control arguments in Ireland and (I assume) England vs gun control arguments in the US.

Its not just an English thing, its a European thing lol, we're just not bothered about violence and nudity at all. Admittedly their will be the odd country that is, but iv never heard about it, except Germany, which is partial to violence.

Soteria, Dansayshi just posted what I was getting at. In regards to video games Europe is incredibly relaxed apart from a few countries. I think Germany is renowned for having some form of censorship and one of the other European countries (is it Sweden? I can't remember) seems to be moving in that direction.

This game has nothing compared to the nudity in Dante's Inferno. That is gratuitous.
The partial nudity is kind of funny if you ask me. I don't see what the fuss is about. By the way I agree with Dansayshi about how decapitation is fine but no nipple show. LOL. I mean isn't drinking blood and having violent hallucinations worse?!

Let's see...

What is the most natural thing to do in modern society?
1: Procreate.
2: Kill someone.

What do we want our kids to do when they grow up?
1: Procreate.
2: Kill someone.

What are we most afraid of:
1: Getting raped.
2: Getting killed.

What do we want the most:
1: Have sex
2: To kill someone

...
If your score is 4 or below, you're normal
If your score is 5, you are religious nut.
If your score is 6 or above, you're lying and/or a psychopath.

...
Then comes the question:
What do we want our kids to watch..:
a) Sex / Virtual sex
B) Murder / Virtual murder

...

If you say B) -- isn't it because YOU feel insecure, and not because there's any REAL reason EXCEPT your insecurity that makes you want to watch violence over sex?

Finally: Is there any SCIENTIFIC evidence for the sexual censorship having any beneficial effects what so ever, except reducing giggling and blushing among the audience?

...
I've seen movies from before the first world war, and I've studied enough history to know that nudity have become unacceptable the PAST 300 YEARS -- and the censorship has grown WORSE (read more strict) the past 60 years...
...
Which is confuzzling: Society is becoming more and more conservative than before; we make rules to hide things that discomforts us. We, society, limit other people's freedom because we feel discomfortable watching some things that makes us feel insecure.

...

I feel so dirty after reading all this talk about nudity

I'm going for a bath. In my pajamas of course

If you can get worked up over a pair of breasts that aren't real then you have a problem.

Remember, blowing the heads of hookers with shotguns is fine. Sleeping with them is not.

Well done America, guns are great, but representations sex, even consensual sex between adults is borderline illegal.

The ESRB should really do something about it, and start using a rating system that wasn't put together by some conservative nut-jobs.

Remember: When you are 18... You won't be shocked for the rest of your life because you saw nipples unless something is really wrong with you :-)

My thoughts on nudity...A necessary evil. Travel, romance, and bloody good fights...Gotta love it.
