If that article I read on popsci.com like a month ago, turns out to be true, and I say this because in the article, scientists were not 100% sure, but Neptune and Uranus, they think, might have oceans of diamond.

I would think if it turns out that they are right, then that would be more then enough motivation to get people on the move.

Here is a link to the article.

If it does turn out to be true, we could see something near mass effect's advancement even sooner.:D

Well, since 1984 came and went without issue, I'd say fictional timelines aren't generally very accurate.

the closeness of date settings in futuristic sci-fi usually depend on the author's intention and perspective. In Orwell's time, I believe, there were several totalitarian regimes and potential totalitarian structures that could have made 1984 into a possibility, so that was why he chose that date. As for ME, it is farther than most timelines. We still have to develop technology that could get us to Mars to find Prothean ruins, but the environmental concerns and issues that seem to make earth a badly polluted in ME could be found now so that could be a possibility in the near future. I hope they feature Earth as a location in ME3 so we could see how devs foresee earth and flesh out their perspective on general humanity, which I like in ME1 and 2. The ability to define humanity and human conditions is what puts ME close to those of Asimov and other great sci-fi writers.

Too bad the Council hasn't uplifted us yet. Damn those Raloi, they send one dinky probe up into space and suddenly everyone goes ga-ga over it and welcomes them into the galactic community with open arms.

There was a some talk a while back, that something called the Black Knight Satellite.

That shadowed sputnik in 1960, and from what people have said. The satellite was far bigger, then any nation on earth could launch in the 60's.

What one of the HAM operators said:

He managed to decode one of the transmissions, and it corresponded to a star chart. A star chart which would have been plotted from earth 13,000 years ago, and focused on the Epsilon Bostes star system.

My Thoughts on faster space travel:

I reckon Humankind may be able to do light speed or FTL in 150-300 years time.

What this all mean:

In my view, there is other beings out there. Which have FTL engines or light speed engines, but they won't share it with us.

Because we got to sort out a lot of things, like the planet, wars and so forth. However if we solve a lot of things on are planet, then maybe they will share stuff with us.

A let it be known in public view. But if we don't sort out a lot of things, then we will have to sort out are own type of FTL engine.

In theory, most of the tech neccesary for this kind of advancement is impossible, however theory is as fickle and prone to dissolving as three day old toast floating in battery acid.

I'm honestly surprised no-ones mentioned gravity. While no unified theory of gravity has been proposed, once it is, and is proven, I think it will buck nearly every physics theory we have. Gravity is the key.

Unified Field Theory in short.
