The Two-Handed Weapon tree does not deal as much damage as the Dual Wield tree. However, its damage is highly underrated. Assuming you build your party to include Haste (a must for 2H Warriors to perform at their peak), and apply Swift Salves for important encounters, the difference in DPS is minimal and actually mostly due to the extra set of runes and Mages' weapon enchant procs more than anything else. Where 2H shines is CC. Two Weapon Sweep and a 50% Stun on critical hits are both great abilities. Powerful Swings seems like a weak sustain judging by the in-game tooltip, but actually provides a passive 25% armor penetration when specced for Two-Handed Strength. A 2H Warrior will be able to almost ignore even a Dragon's armor between that ability, Destroyer, and the high amount of base ArP on Mauls. Indomitable is, of course, possibly the best sustain in the game. I recommend that all 2H Warriors spec Champion to enhance their CC role, and then either Berserker or Templar (for the same reasons as DW).
Shield Warriors are the most effective tanks overall; however, even on Nightmare, it's easy to main tank through the game with either a DW or 2H Warrior, even without using healing magic or excessive poultices. For this reason, I recommend against them except for new players, because the other specs are sufficient for tanking and deal much more damage. No arguing that a well-built Shield Warrior isn't fun to play, though: with their sustains and high Dexterity, they can become pretty much untouchable. When Awakening scales the game to epic levels, it's possible that a Shield Warrior may become more optimal. This may also be true of Nightmare Plus and various other difficulty mods; I have not experimented with altering the core game rules. As it stands, any build of Warrior (even 100% Strength 2H) can tank for a party on Nightmare, so choose what you think is the most fun/sexy rather than what you think you have to use to win.

I completely agree with your reasoning
behind using 2 large weapons rather than daggers. My first main
was a DW and his AOE attacks really took a lot of pressure off my
tank to hold off mob advances for extended periods of times.
Also, he and Leliana were my only 2 sources of damage because I used
Alistair for a tank, and Wynne for CC and heals.
To
make sure My DW hit hard I put points in his dex up to 36
(before equipment enhancements) and then the rest in strength.
His AOE attacks dropped minions really fast, and whoever didn't die
was picked off by Leliana on her attack.
As far as
specs, I'm biased towards pure DPS DW's and would go Berserker and
Reaver. Wouldn't even bother with Champion or Templar as they
are more suited to tanking. But, it's all dependant on if you
want to off-tank with the DW.
2H Warriors can be incredibly effective
DPS if micromanaged correctly. Overall, I find that playing a 2H is
very click intensive, as I take advantage of how activated abilities
skip the animation cool-downs.
For my 2H, I pretty much invested
everything into strength to (of course) increase base damage, and to
also increase attack success rate. I invested a few points in
willpower just so I can keep his sustained abilities up and at the
same time have enough stamina to use his activated abilities on a
consistent bases.
For specs, I took Berserker for more
DPS and Templar for magic immunity. But, Champion is also viable
because you can never have too much CC. I can't make a claim for why
2H would be effective Reavers, but maybe someone else can.
Shield Warriors don't get any variable
than what 5Warlocks says. Although, with Alistair you could take
advantage of his con boosts to try to make a tough tank, but it's
more rational to put the points in dex since you have to, anyway, for
the third branch of Shield.
Specs should be Champion and Templar
for CC/party boost and magic resistance.

Two-handed build, you want to get your hands on the Chasind Great Maul or if you have the Wardens Keep DLC, the Two-handed variant of Starfang. Wades Superior Dragonbone plate, Legion of the Dead plate, and the armor sets from the DLCs are all excellent sets for a stamina hungry warrior.
For a Weapon and Shield build, you have lots of choice when it comes to your weapons. Keening Blade, Topsiders Honor and the Swords from the DLCs are all good choices. For armor, I would say that the Juggernaut set is best for a main tank due to the spell resist. Shields you want to keep an eye out for Fade Wall, Howes Shield, and Bodhan at the party camp sells a nice shield to get you started (forgot the name).

Another thing about 2H warriors
- Should spec to get both Sunder Abilities as quickly as possible as both do decent damage and (as stated previously) can ignore the cool-down times instantly with a click
- Don't spec through the powerful blow's tree in the beginning because the attack penalty can really handicap the character
- Precise Striking and Indominable are must-have sustains
- Should have approximately 110 free stamina after sustains for activated abilites
- Main strategy for this build is a powerful offense over defense. No need to put points in dex or con, as you should be bulldozing through enemies

first get powerful and a dualwield talent.
Put a single point in cunning, get 26 dex and momentum as fast as possible.
then get the first 3 dual wield talents and presise strikeing.
then put enough points in strength so you can wear the best templar magic resist gear.
after you can wear that you put all points into dex.
Also along the way get combat training tier 4, coercion ier 4 and basic poison makeing.
equipment: get 2 daggers. 2 good daggers can be found in orshammer.
Get spellward amulet, and the armor with 40% magic resist .
Other items are more optional, but try to get as much damage as possible, and consider getting the last 20% magic resist.
Templar specialization is needed, champion is recommended.
In awakening spirit warrior is very useful.
Ps: try to get a mage to give you haste and fire weapon or cold weapon buff.
Awakening is easy so you cannot really mess up there.
