For a few experience points? 'Quest complete.' That was my reasoning. He's the only one I never even began to like. Oghren grew on me - Sten just annoyed me throughout.

The better question is what Duncan ever saw in Ser Jory.

eta:  The BEST question is why some developer/writer didn't expose Isolde as the villain I *know* she is, & give her the gory death her horrid face & whiny voice deserve! I don't care what she did - give me a reason to kill her, without giving her the 'heroic sacrfice out.'

I know..I can't stand Isolde..just for being the absolute idiot she is...and for the fact of her covering up her son's magical abilities, that in the end caused the deaths of so many people.    She even hides the truth from her husband, how misguided and selfish is that?

Her reaction:   "Who is dis..woman...Tee..gun"...every time she says it I want to bat her over the head with something..LOL

Not usual for me to dislike a character this much......good writing Bioware.   I still want a legal chance to do away with her however. :)

Why would a Grey Warden release Sten?

For the same reason my Grey Warden initially released Sten.

Namely, to ****** off the chantry.

When they make Dragon Age 2, I want an option to be put into all conversations.
This option is that whenever some medieval unwashed wanabe noble tells me to "know my place" or something to that effect I can immediately chop their head off.

@ OP

Because he's big and kills things? And he says he wants to repent for what he did, so what better way to repent than to be big and kill darkspawn among the things he normally kills?

I was being flippant -- the gist of my point stands, I believe.  The Warden does not know anything about Sten other than the fact that he murdered a bunch of people, calmly gave himself up and that he appears to harbour genuine regret. That makes him more unpredictable, not less.

Yes, the whole matter has something unpredictable about it, but the fact that he understands his situation and stands by his sentence, makes him (most likely) a more stable character than one who is in deep desperation about his act. I certainly disagree on this point.

Because I want to gain experience from completing his personal quest, also because for the beginning of the game the only other guy I have to talk to in camp is Alistair so Sten adds in a sense of manly toughness for me when I play. Plus he's wants redemption and the least one could do is release him and recruit him. Finally... because he likes cookies just as much as I do. XD

Ok, ok, here is how I think it stands: if you try to interpret Sten as a fictional character, in this funny little secondary world of rudimentary civilizations and high adventure, his stoicism (next to his helpfulness) is certainly the hook specifically designed to give it a try and let him out of the cage. If you interpret the case realistically, in the here and now, there would be no visible or likely reason to free him in the least.

I recruit Loghain because - in all things - him becoming a grey warden is the absolute worst punishment I can give him. Allistair and his metrosexual emo ways be damned. Killing Loghain would be 1 second of righteous vengeance and it would be over. The SOB would still get a hero's death because in the end it was Loghain that made ferelden free. no no and triple NO. this man shall see everything he holds dear be forever out of his grasp while having to live in the shoes of those he despised, forever feeling the taint within him with every waking breath until he dies.

Sten on the other hand I recruited to ****** off the chantry.

This might be weird, but I always tend to roleplay characters as particularly curious (if foolishly so). I like to lie to demons, or get as much as I can from them before killing them. I like to question a characters motives before judging them. Sten is a strange man in a stange land, and his stoic and driven personality makes him a welcome adition to your usually emotional companions.

Basically he's interesting, like them "demon's couple" in the circle tower, or Ruck in the deep roads. Flawed, but with potential.

Loghain, on the other hand, I just cant bear recruting. Like rendon how, he's been far to annoying to let live.

I think a key flaw is that you assume Sten is intended to be evil, which I don't think he is. If anything, he's true neutral, and the fact that he lets himself be caught without struggle shows that he experiences true guilt for his actions, and that's what separates good from evil. People who are inherently evil commit crimes without feeling guilt or regret for it, or if they do it's so minimal that they bury or ignore it. People who are inherently good feel guilt after committing a crime.

Sten made a mistake and owned up to it. He didn't try to run and hide or try to wiggle his way out of it with semantics and legalities. For that he deserves a chance at redemption, to prove that he is a good person, which he does throughout the game. Is his personality very rough from our perspective, yes, but the environment and culture he grew up in shaped that and in his society, it's the norm.

I based my in-game reasoning for releasing Sten on the fact that he was so willing to get captured and seemed to put up no resistance.  He was not flailing around, rattling the cages, or roaring for his release like a madman.  Rather, my character stood in front of him and they had a rather polite discussion in which he expressed his desire for atonement, or something like that.  Obviously there was more to meet the eye in this situation - anyone could tell that much.  Not to mention that all three of my party members (Morrigan, Alistair, Leliana) seemed to be in favor of his release.  And if you consider the player's situation - trying to save the world against a powerful force of crazed demonic beings and all they have are three (maybe two) companions and a dog - Sten is looking like a reliable hand.  So my character takes the chance, figuring that on the offchance that Sten makes a bad move he'll be unlikely to stand against my character's own battle prowess combined with that of the other companions.

Well i took Sten for the only reason that i nedeed a warrior..and he looked like a warrior to me.For RP i would say i will keep an eye on him...i mean it's me..Alistair,Morrigan,dog and Leliana.WE can keep him.ANd later on he proves to be my kind of companion..a soldier..with a defined morality. He dosen't speak to gods nor does he whine a lot...nor is he complaining for every good thing i do.

Well actually i like all companions except Alistair the crybaby patriarch.

I actually have had a really enjoyable play through with Sten. I did a "Sacred Ashes" themed game. Warden is sword and shield wearing the armor from Warden's Keep, and I have Sten, Leliana, and Morrigan. Their tactics match to what little is shown in the 6 minute Sacred Ashes CG trailer and I played the Warden as well as I could based on how he acted in the trailer. It also helps to download a replacement face for Sten. Now that he doesn't look so frumpy and you can tell when he's smiling more it's more enjoyable to have along. One thing to remember about Sten is he is an absolute pragmatist. If what you are doing does not make practical sense he will not approve. He respects duty and if you stand up to him because you plan on showing him what you're doing is right, if not unorthodox.

DLC - Spoiler

As for Loghain, he actually gets redeemed in the return to Ostagar DLC when you find out even if he had stayed in battle the Darkspawn would have won and that Cailen already knew this.

The only characters I don't really like are Oghren and Zevran. I don't like drunks and I don't like companions as nonchalant as Zevran (He doesn't even say anything when you find the Dalish wtf!!?).

Yes he does, in fact he has alot to say about the Dalish and if you tell Witherfang that she should attack the Dalish he gets really pissed and is one of the few characters who trys to talk you out of it.

I recruited him for several reason:

1) ****** off the chantry

2) Big giant dude looked useful for darkspawn smashing.

3) I thought there was an interesting story to him(and there was!)

4) Because he likes cookies.

I hope DA2 involves destroying the chantry...

Not true at all. I gave the reason I would do so if this was real.
I'll state it again: because the Chantry wants him caged.
The enemy of my enemy is my friend. The Chantry is my enemy because they destroyed the elven homeland.

Does it matter?... you recruited a delusional bard, a flirtatious assassin. a piece of drunkard of a warrior, a bird hating golem... I think among all the companions. Sten is the only one who fits a description of "potential recruits"

so true.

it should be readily apparant that to a grey warden-

the darkspawn, not human law or even perverted chantry edicts is of primary concern.

- thus this is why even a "goody two shoes" warden can justify enlisting a blood mage.

- duncan even says "chantry business is not our business".

and wardens are known for using whatever necessary since the blight is the highest threat- and human politics are of no consequence to them.

its actually MORE likely for a warden to recruit sten given morrigans statement of him bieng a "powerfull warrior" and if you speak to him while in the cage- about his pledge to find atonement by fighting the darkspawn.

He's like Shale, who I don't recruit.
They are both murderers
and through their first dialogues they clearly stated they don't feel
ashamed nor guilty about anything they did. And that's why I cannot take them with me.
I consider these 2 even worst than Loghain, at least Loghain was doing it for the people of Ferelden, these 2 guys... pffffffff

I dont get this its just a game.... like how people hate some of the squadmates in ME2 just because of there personality like Jack and Mirranda. I like everyone from Jack to Tali. BECAUSE ITS A GAME!!! i dont care that Jack is a killer she can do whatever she wants as long as it doesn't effect me. BECAUSE ITS A GAME!!!!. Its like the show Dexter, i read a forum where some one said that the only reason they could watch it was because of his Wife and the kids were keeping me somewhat normal, and when his wife was killed they cancelled their Showtime subscription... Thats ridiculous!!!!!!!!!!! ITS A SHOW!!!!! Maybe its just me and not having a shred of soul in me but idk...

Some people find that they can enjoy a story more if they suspend disbelief and allow themselves to have an emotional response to the characters. You should try it sometime. I find killing characters like Howe to be a lot more entertaining if I let myself hate them a little.

I recruited him because I'm not the nice type of people I like to fight my battles alone, so I like chratchers like morrigan or Sten that are "with me" when we are doing the job and after that everybody goes on his way.
