So, i just recently finished my renegade femshep playthrough of ME1. in this playthrough i had lead Liara on romantically, and then turned her down at the love scene, thinking that i could do this to further how mean my shep is and still avoid any love interest so she could romance garrus without any later problems.
so then today i played through the opening levels of ME2 with her, and finally got the normandy only to find a picture of liara on my desk. does this mean that merely pursuing her romantic dialogue in ME1 and then turning her down last minute has still placed her as my LI?
the overview screen for my ME1 accomplishments at the opening of the game didnt mention any love interest, so is the picture just a placeholer or something?
Love interest confusion...

Nope it thinks you romanced her, which I guess you did you just didn't go all the way.

Ouch, not 100% confirmed - won't be until you meet up with Liara and see how she reacts to you but... as I understand the main theory is its used as a type of loyalty measure. If you're still loyal to your ME1 LI then the picture will be up, if you are considered "unloyal" then the picture will be faced down, hidden from view.
In other words, I think the game considers Liara as your LI from ME1.

from what I've read if you take it all the way up to the sexy time completion and then turn them down, it still thinks you romanced them, you just didn't seal the deal.

Turning her down before Ilos is pretty much a "This isn't the proper time for sex." speech, not a breakup.
You romanced Liara.

grumble.
i was afraid of that.
oh well. cheating on her is pretty renegade anyway, and the imminent argument in ME3 should prove interesting.

Yeah I went back and tested it after a similar situation with Ashley. The last chance you have to stop the game from thinking you have a romance (sex or no) is the Locker scene in ME1. Shut them down hard there and it doesn't carry over to ME2.

She's crazy now, it doesn't matter.

Heh, be a pretty big plot twist if Bioware somehow creates an explanation as to why your ME1 LI won't be upset that you hooked up with someone else. I know, unlikely, but then you just know a lot of people thought that Horizon was a breakup and then - few missions later - you get a somewhat confusing email from your former LI (that is if you romanced Kaidan or Ashley).

Hmmm... I had a femshep who didn't initiate any romances at all in ME1 and I didn't have a photo on my desk, so I guess you had a sweetheart after all, even though you didn't put out.

I am still trying to figure out why people think being renegade means being a complete and utter a**hole. Oh well to each his own I guess..
