I'd say both Sten and Oghren are younger than you'd think. Sten was a leader, but he's still fit and young enough to work in the field overseas - 30 - 35.

Oghren is less than 40 deffo. He drinks a lot and doesn't have a great deal to make him happy, hence his face is more lined and careworn than you think. Again 34 - 38

Zev's a little older than you'd think too - but he's a little vain (as much as I love him) so hides it well with nicely fitting clothes and good hair ;-) He strikes me as a man at peace with himself and his proclivities, and that kind of ease doesn't normally come until your thirties at the earliest. I'd say anywhere from 33 - 40.

Alistair has always been 24 to me. Still young enough to fight well, but old enough for a little bitterness about his life to have crept in to his soul. Plus, besides the Templar Training, I find it hard to imagine he'd wait much longer to pop his cherry....

Morrigan just has to be precocious - I'd say 20 at most, but more like 18.

Leliana - older than you'd think. I'd put her at around 28 - 32. Like Zev, she hides it well, but she's no spring chicken

Poor Wynn - I'm pretty sure she's somewhere between 50 - 60. Some mornings she feels about 93, especially when she finds one of Alistairs dirty socks in her sleeping bag... some days she feels a spry 50. In any case, living in Camp and fighting darkspawn is a hard life for an old bird.

Definitely seems like a lot of those were altered over the course of making the game. Obviously Alistair, but also Morrigan definitely doesn't strike me as 30 (mid 20s at the oldest), Wynne must be older than 55 or else she needs to shut the heck up about being soooooo old (she'd be about my mom's age, and for goodness' sake my mom doesn't have grey hair and act like she'll die at any moment), and Zevran is definitely older than 24 (closer to 30).
But since it seems the exact figures aren't too important, I guess people are free to interpret things how they want. Since people play different aged PCs, being able to view a character as older or younger to fit in line with the PC is just a good thing.

David Gaider once said he thought of Morrigan as being around 27. They've said several times that Alistair's age was changed during development.

My mother started going grey when she was 50. My ex-boss was very much committed to the 'natural' life and at 48, she's completely grey. At 55, in the middle-ages, you probably felt your age a bit more than modern times. I’m going to assume your mother doesn’t spend her days wandering around forests and caves, battling darkspawn. Moreover, it syncs with her being 30 years older than Leliana.

There’s nothing in the game to make me think that Zevran is 30.

For me, the toolset numbers could be correct in many cases (apart from Fergus and Bryce Cousland, which are 30 and 40 years old...). If I am not wrong, one of the oldest ones around is Irving, with 70. Harrowmont is also 60 (which is also strange, since Endrin Aeducan is 50... ). Looking at your brother's ages in the dwarf noble origin, Trian is 25, Bhelen is 21. And since you're the second oldest brother/sister, you are around 23. This however isn't a universal truth. I forgot to check the age of your dwarf commoner sister. That could tell something about the character age.

Yeah I dont think that would work for Alistair because if he is Fionas baby Duncan would of had to be 10 in The Calling and in the dream sequance Maric discribes him as 18ish.

Alistair acts (when he's serious) and looks like he should be about 30-32 however, the fact that he has never 'been' with a lady at that age is almost unbelievable. Even if he was raised in the Chantry women would have been hitting on him all the time.

Since there is nothing written in stone, I play the character's ages as I see fitting my playing style.

PC Mage - 25,
Jowan - 25

PC HN (all) between 26 and 27
Fergus - 30
Oriana - 28
Oren - 7
Mom and Dad - hovering around the early to mid 50's
Zevran - 30ish, give or take a year
Morrigan - 27
Leliana - 30
Oghren - 45ish
Sten - 40ish
Dog - 6
Shale - 500
Alistair - 22
Wynne - 60
Duncan - early to mid 50's

This is how I envision them, and how I grew to see them. And I am grateful that no particular 'must be' age is given. That way, I can play it as I personally like it.

I for example, don't play PC's younger than 25. It's all in the individual playing style, I guess.  I don't like having a certain age forced on me. I guess that's one of the biggest reasons I never warmed up to FO3, among other big reasons.

Edited because of formatting woes.

If Alistair is Fiona's kid (born 9:13 Dragon), then he's around 17-18. Ferelden men obviously mature pretty fast physically. Or just look at it in terms of the 26 year old Nicolas Brendon playing the 16 year old Xander. Dawson's casting.

I tend to play most of my PCs as no older than 21 or so: on the cusp of adulthood, since most of them are either undergoing a rite that will mark the end of their period of childhood or apprenticeship (City Elf, Mage), or taking on new responsibilities that indicate that their elders now consider them capable adults (Human Noble, Dwarf Noble).  I imagine the Dwarf Commoner as slightly younger--say 18 or so (simply because their older sister strikes me as more early 20s).  I imagine the Dalish elf as slightly older, maybe 24 or 25, since they've already undergone the blood writing ritual and, along with Tamlen, are already considered full hunters in the clan.

As for the companion's ages, here are my guesses:

Alistair- 21 or 22
Duncan - ~50
Leliana – 28 or 29
Loghain - mid 50s
Morrigan – 25 or 26
Oghren –  ~35
Riordan - ~50
Shale – who knows? Like someone said above, once you pass 300 or 400, you tend to stop counting!
Sten – ~35
Wynne - ~60
Zevran – 24 or 25

Shale is only listed as 500, I would have thought more about 800-1200. I thought she was there fore the first Blight but wasn't sure. Still not sure.

I have a sneaking suspicion Anders could be Fiona's child. He looks Theirin-ish. And he's a mage.

If I'm playing an HN or mage I like to think of them as 27-28 or so. It's feasible with Fergus (HN's brother) having a wife and a child that looks to be about 8 - he could be 30 or more.

Being a veteran gamer of 42 I really tire of games that force you to play adolescents, so I try to make my characters as old as I can get away with.

You also have to think of something with a female human noble, if she was 27-28 unmarried wouldn't she be considered a spinster? Her mother was still trying to find a match for her, I can understand if the human noble is way younger then Fergus for many reasons.

But that's just my opinion...

The age thing in Dragon Age is always a mystery for certain...

O.o

All of the kids have the same model, but when you talk to Oren, he sounds more like he's 5-6. Dire bunny and sword of truthiness are not things an 8 year old would say.

I haven't played through the origins yet, but I tend to think the Human Noble should be pretty young. TotoriTori makes a good point about the human noble female--women much over 20 were not generally considered marriageable. For the male, it's less clear, but the way Fergus talks to my PC as little brother makes me think there's a fairly significant difference in our ages. I'm thinking around 20 or so.

Seeing as how Bryce's "headstrong girl refuses to be married off", 26 or 27 wouldn't be a stretch, not for me. Women are not chattel in Ferelden, after all. If she thought she found Mr. (Ser) Right, she would've married him. He just hadn't come along yet.

but not 26 or 27, probably under 24 at the oldest I think.
They don't refer to her as a woman, but still a girl. In those ages they would marry their daughter around 16 sometimes 12 even or that was in the Roman times..
I mean in the early 1900's, 16 year old girl's would get married.

But Howe mentions his son (or daughter), who is several years younger than the human noble. Really, 20 is not a stretch, but 26 is not a stretch either. The human noble's mother is despairing her ever getting married and having children, so she's obviously older than the youngest of marrying ages.

Aside from that, Ferelden isn't really like medieval Europe as far as women are concerned. Look at Ostagar. Plenty of women soldiers. I don't think the true medieval Europe would ever allow that.

Yeah, HN is easily able to get away with being one of the oldest origins. I don't know that any of the origins work well for anyone 30 or over, but several are fine for late 20s. DN, HN (for the reasons listed above), and mage all work fine for late 20s. DE can also be justified. I'd say only CE and DC really suggest that your character is teen--early 20s.

Agreed, Nonvita. The DE can be older, but the CE and DC are the youngest of the bunch. I'd even say that the DC is the youngest, aroung 18 or 19 at most.
