Did anyone enjoy planet scanning?

But really this system seems like a placeholder for what was going to be a cool vehicle system. Hense the Hammerhead DLC and how all the controls for it are already built into the game.
I would also like to remind all the morons having nightmares about the Mako. You are the "ONLY" person to blame for your pain. If you had more patience than a Ferret on Meth you'd have found the neat little paths cut through all the terrain on every single planet in ME1 (yep even the scary one). Basically only retards with ADD had issues with "climbing mountains". The people with slightly less mental retardation found the paths.
But it does seem that Bioware has decided to focus their "new and improved" design theory on the retarded so they don't feel left out. So I guess it makes sense to add in "Probing Uranus" instead of sweet vehicles like every other shooter on the market...

If I had an hour to kill, I'd do some resource scanning/mining then go do whatever I had to do and come back to play for extended periods without having to break up the game by hunting down minerals. It was a nice way to make progress in the game without coughing up three to five hours every damn time I wanted to play.

Total side-note: Almost done replaying ME1 for another import, went to Pinnacle Station for the XP. I want either another Pinnacle Station (one actually made by Bioware that has some degree of polish to it) or a miniature simulation room on the SR2 so I can go in and just have fun shooting things for a bit. I bet that would be an awesome way to break up the monotony of scanning for some.

A better system [that includes the bad scanning system] would have been:
-- Give players tons of resources so they'd only have to scan a little to get those final upgrade [like Med Bay or the L5 upgrades]
-- Give rich players / players that completed the resource quests in ME1 a bonus so they wouldn't EVER need to scan planets.
-- For New Game + characters let them keep ALL of their prior upgrades / weapons / etc. and also carryover any money or resources from the prior game. If you want to replay to finish up a few odds & ends then so be it.
Obviously the "best" solution would have been to have rethought the whole "scan the planet" and "upgrade" system.
EDIT: On scanning I agree with most suggestions. For XBox 360 press & release the trigger to make scans go more quickly. Also try not to overlap areas with your scan area. Only take the really rich spikes. This way you can save $ on probes and scanning should go fairly quickly. I'd also recommend only scanning when you need to scan [duh]. Then only get as much as you think you need.

Planet scanning was deffinetly better than the mako. It does get tedious, especially on second play through, but I can see the need for it. Not only does it brake up the story missions, and allow for sub missions to be discovered and completed. But it also makes the player have to work for his/ her upgrades. We can't get everything just by completing the standard plot lines. What would be an improvement though is if the player was allowed to sell surplus materials at a space refinerey or something allowing you to buy more equitment sooner. Dont know about anyone else, but early on I ended up with more than enough.
So it was better than the mako because it did the same thing the mako did only in a more boring and less interactive way?

On the xbox 360, I would recommend that they somehow make the speed of scanning go faster. You can do it via Pc (by adjusting mouse sensitivity) a simlar function should be made for the 360.
also, recommend that you are NOT required to hold down the LT just to scan a planet. IT should be automatic. My left hand is naturally weak due to a motorcycle accident I had years ago so holding down any trigger or even "press & release" action makes my hand hurt constantly. Can we say CARPAL TUNNEL anyone? Scanning is not helpful to those with some type of minor disability. And a PITA for someone who has a major disability (case in point, my Exboyfriend has Cerebral Palsy, his left hand is "deformed" and he right now, loathes scanning, so I have to help him through it). He can play the game just fine; he just can't stand the scanning for minerals. He had more fun with the Mako from the first game.
I spent 6 hours of gameplay just devoted to scanning. Im not looking forward to it on subsequent playthroughs and even with the added resources for starting a new game after completion, its still not enough to get a majority of your upgrades (DAMN YOU PLATINUM!)

jesus dude, no offense but u need your head examined. the only thing worse than the planet scanning was the "bypass" hacking, possibly the worst insult to my intelligence i've ever recieved whilst gaming(and ive played a lot of jrpg's)
crawling up mountains in the mako during me1 could be frustrating but that was purely bad level design and could easily have been fixed, but noooo.... thanks to the mako haters and ea probably making bioware hang on to the "hammerhead" stuff for "free dlc(*cough* bullcrap)", we end up with possibly the worst mini game ever encountered in a modern video game(after the bypass stuff ofc)
i mean seriously, bioware made a great shooter with me2 and its hard to imagine the same group of ppl could'nt think of anything better than the terrible planet scanning
although i can imagine they where told to cut all the mako stuff and just stick in a replacement instead, but wouldnt it have made more sense to give bioware time to finish the hammerhead stuff and incorporate it into the game like me1 did? also that way u release the game later and dont tread on the dragon age expansions toes, as i cant imagine ppl will go back to that now me2 is out(still some ppl argue the dialogue in dragon age is "mature and well-written" so i guess ppl are capable of anything)

[The bad thing is NG+ doesn't even help existing characters who just want to play through the game as they take away all your "upgrades"]

Irritating and repetitive which hampered the epic feel of the first game and making the galaxy seem smaller.

Either way, I loved the resource+upgrade system, and hope they'll have something similiar, if not the same, in ME3.

Planet scanning gets boring fast, but I liked it nevertheless. The whole resource gathering, researching and upgrading gave the game much more depth. I also liked the Mako though. The empty planets not so much, but the Mako itself was great fun, on missions like Virmire or Noveria.

Shooting probes at a slow spinning planet = depth

If there was a free DLC that offered a scanner upgrade that pointed you to the directions of big mineral spikes, like it does for anomalies, the criticism against it wouldn't be so harsh. 90% of it is wildly moving your mouse around to find a spike, and the other 10% is meticulously moving it into position. It's a mindless time killer -- far better than driving over mountains for 10 minutes to complete a terrible, uninspired 5 minute mission, but it can be easily refined with this one simple change.

So it was a bit gimmicky, but I enjoyed the polished feeling of scanning a planet. It was relaxing and rewarding when you could finally afford that research project you had been trying to for so long. A lot of people don't like it here, and I can sympathise with that, but I enjoyed it and wanted to see if anyone else did.
You're a sick, sick man...And masochistic lol. Seriously though, was fine my first playthrough but after that, not so much.

Why couldn't they just give me a sort of cropping tool? Click somewhere on the planet and drag your cursor, expanding a square grid which highlights a large section of the planet to be scanned within it...

The mako wasn't really there for resource grabbing anyway seeing as you couldn't use resources for anything in ME1.
