It has become more like a shooter-rpg hybrid, so it is nice when missions have both elements. But missions like this on occasion are a nice setback from things.

Thane's personal mission. Tedious and needs to be repeated over and over if you happen to turn in the wrong direction while monitoring Talid.

All the N7 missions that didn't involve killing mercs.

I thought that was a pretty cool mission, I was afraid at many points that I had ****ed up.

The worst mission is Horizon. You've been trotting along in a lovely manner for the first part of the game, and you've been given a sudden mission by Tiny Tim which you MUST GO ON! How fun! So, a few collector drones later and you come up to this big blast door! What could be on the other side? We must go in!
Whats on the other side you ask? 1 hour of misery, irritating enemies and a single respawn point. Enemies who are rediculously too tough for your current tech upgrades, who have barriers whowm none of your squad members that you currently have are well adapted to take out and refuse to take any damage whatsoever from any of your powers.
Scions can have a train thrown at them and refuse to take much more than a pixel of damage or stop moving in their current direction or alter their firing pattern in any way. Collector "Assassins" will Zerg rush you at any point you have no shields and promptly surround you and kill you. Harbingers will continually throw their insta-stunning, un-dodgable cover-ignoring lolrocket regardless of how many times I snipe them in the face and the cover planned so that at no point can you possibly avoid being hit by something somewhere.
Oh, and if you slip up in any way your teamates die regardless of how many 100%+ health bonuses you research for them and leave you alone with all the deadly bee people and you can't hide in any remotely building like area because it's full of beetles and jellyfish and things that want to kill you.
And then-

"OUT OF WAY N00BZ. I R GUNNA TAKE OUT THIS NUB!"
"LOLOLBELLYFLOP! MY BARRIER R 1337 ONLY N00BZ USE SHIELDS LOL!"
"LOL HUSKS GET THEM I NEED TO CHAERG"
"LOL RUN OUT OF COVER N00B I R COMMING FOR U!"
"BELLY FLOP IS 1337 LOL"

All in all, this entire sequence made me want to pull out my hair and go to a small farm and strangle things.

That mission can be extremely frustrating at time, especially near the end, where the cover absolutely sucks and there are plenty of guys who can insta-kill you.  The husk-slap + scion shockwave combo killed me about two dozen times before I beat it on hardcore.

Seriously. You just go up to that area in the back. the scions can't hit you and you can gun down the husks as you run about in front of you. Heavy weapons or singularity work good. I only died the first time but after the scions while fighting the praetorian because it's stun attack went through 3 feet a rubble i was using as cover and then its beam blasted me through cover while I was stumbling. Never died on any other Horizon playthrough since then.

What difficulty are you playing on?

I've never understood why people complained about those non-combat missions so much. I honestly didn't mind them, they were all quite different, a change of pace. I loved them. Especially the Estanevico (sp?) was very atmospheric. The shielding one was so short that if you don't find it exciting it takes about 2 minutes to complete for some XP and creds. I admit the YMIR mech in the canyon was a bit slow paced, but honestly I didn't mind it either, I wish they'd upped the mineral reward though.

Honestly I would enjoy more quests like Samara's loyalty or Thane's loyalty (I think this one would have been even better had they allowed you to hear what Joram was saying most of the time, to get an idea of the political situation).

My only quibble with the three part mech mission was wondering just why all those people inside the space station were dead (in a fairly violent manner) when there was nothing that could have killed them?

Actually I enjoyed all of them, they were all unique and visually cool. A lot better than DA:O where most side missions were to go to towns X, Y, and Z and talk person A, B, and C and collect 50 silver.

I felt the same way.  The visuals and intro/outro cutscenes do a lot to creat interest for me.  A lot of people complain about the foggy planet where you disable the Blood Pack relay, but I found it really visually intriguing (despite the numerous bugs and discovery of Shep's hitherto unknown--and unwanted--levitation ability).

I found that Salarian info broker's fetch quest a little tedious.  I felt I should've at least been given the option of handing it over to Liara.  Even so, the fact that there were two ways to resolve it saved it from being completely inane.

If Bioware never created the lame N7 missions, we'd either have more awesome main worlds where we could use our squad or at least some interesting assignments like in ME1 that made us feel like we were doing something IMPORTANT.

An N7 mission for a mineral where you shove a battery into a mechs backside every ten or so paces because it runs out of power. For me that was about the worse sidequest in the history of sidequests. Loyalty mission wise the worse would be Samara's. It's boring and I didn't even get to see her beat up that Turian. Plus that whole conversation is creepy.

As far as bad missions, Samara's Loyalty mission the most irritating simply because I hate Morinth with every last fiber of my being.

As far as mission that were a let down, the Cyniad Crash site had be hoping that perhaps we'd get to see Hendel and Gillian in game but no...all we get a half dead Quarian and a bunch of Varren.

HUSK MINE! *shakes fist* The Husks are bad enough. Having their zombies moans and parrot screeches as part of the ambient noises was just sadistic...

The geth weather one is pointless, but also hilarious if you have a sniper rifle or good aim. Apparently "I should conceal my giant blazing flashlight eye, lest it give away my position" is a concept that escapes the geth....

Its actually pretty easy if you put your squad right on top of the quraian. Then they'll actualy kill the varren. Did it with Grunt and Samara

This mission is a great nod at those that read Ascension though.  Since it's about the Idenna and all.  That alone was worth the 2-second mission.

So what you're saying is they should eliminate sidequests entirely?  I could get on board with that.  Less pointless side missions and a longer story.  Hrm... I could definitely get on board with that.

Yeah, the whole being related to Idenna was pretty cool and all, but I couldn't help but hope (as has been said a few posts ago) that we run into Hendel, Gillian, or Lemm.  They were all beast. :D

I also found the shield generator mission to be disappointing, but not because it was a deviation from the shooter mold. There simply was no challenge, and as far as I could tell, no consequence. I like puzzles, and I like the concept of what they were trying to do here, but the implementation was lacking. The reflecting mirrors section of the space station mission was a better example of a good deviation, but it was a little too simple as well.

For loyalty missions, I liked Jacob's the least, primarily due to the toxic fruit shenanigans. I think I would have preferred brain slugs or hypnotoad as viable alternatives.

The hate for Samara's loyalty mission bewilders me a bit. It was a game highlight for me and made me genuinely tense. The only thing I can say against it is that the sound cut out during the final showdown.

The only problem i have with N7 missions was the silence, even in ME1 i did side missions on other playthroughs just for the different character interactions and also the decisions made, like saving toombs, or killing him or the scientist. Deactivating a nuke and having your Mako stolen. Dealing with people from your past who went psycho. All this stuff that developed your own Shepard with the decisions you could make. None of the N7 missions had any dialogue, any character interaction and felt just disjointed.

I'm assuming all the random story elements in ME1 gave Bioware such a headache incorporating them into ME2 that they figured they'd save themselves a lot of resources by only have the main missions have any decisions or consequences. It's a shame but thats at least how i see it

So far the worst mission I've done... was the one with the 'secret' stash and the three mechs... The area was just so bland, the crates were bland... the reward was very insignificant and the fight wasn't even slightly amusing.
Feeding an Ymir Mech with batteries to get some minerals.Walk on a cliffhanger ship to retrieve mysterious data....

These are my least favorite three.

No. They should've made N7 missions/assignments more emotionally engaging.

In ME1, we were helping people.

We were doing things that MATTERED.

Ending a huge geth ambush before it began.

Killing a sick scientist that grew organs in people's bodies just to sell them.

Eliminating the remaining rachni that couldn't be saved.

Getting rid of the thorian creepers sent to other colonies.

Helping a man find his brother.

Convincing a crime lord to end her ways.

etc etc

But in Mass Effect 2, what the hell are we really doing?

Got a broken ship for a museum.

Fixed a weather device.

Shut off a VI.

Killed random mercs because they're mercs.

Found a beacon(OMG WAS THIS IMPORTANT!?) that had one new scene never mentioned in game(NEVERMIND)

The shield generator, stranded quarian and crashed ship side missions were all pretty tedious but were quick. The one I look forward to the least with every play-through is the Normandy Crash Site. I know its supposed to be poignant but it ends up being a drag as you run around looking for 20 dog tags and plant a monument no one is going to see.

Feed the YMIR was pretty lame. I suppose mostly because the reward was crap.

I was hoping the shield generator one would lead somewhere, but at least it only took a minute. Seemed a little like sabotage to me. Wasted opportunity.
