Today I was reading Dragon Age cronology, and a question about the old barbaric tribes of Ferelden arose.
First we have the Alamarri, from which stemmed the Chasind (the Alamarri who inhabited the Wilds) and the Avvars, who split from the main Alamarri tribe to live near the Frostback Mountains. An Alamarri, Hefter, was the first man to be named Teyrn.
What about the Clayne? Were they just another barbaric tribe, wholly different from the Alamarri, or they too stemmed from the Alamarri? Codex entries mentions that Calehand united the Clayne tribes into one nation, Ferelden, but what about the Alamarri tribes? Were they already conquered by the Clayne? Or is it a whole different story?
Also, do we know which tribe did Maferath belong to?

The Clayne, the Avvars and the Chasind are all tribes of the Alamarri people -- they all share that common ancestry. Calenhad united the Clayne to create Ferelden -- remember that neither the Avvars nor the Chasind are part of the kingdom.
And, yes, originally there was a "Human Barbarian" origin where you began as one of the Avvars. Your clan was wiped out, with you as the last survivor, and you were able to re-visit your origin when you went to the Urn of Sacred Ashes plot (which was in Avvar territory -- this was prior to Haven's existence, and prior to the involvement of the Andrastian cultists). This was scrapped fairly early on, as we just didn't have the art resources to give the Avvars a different "look" and it didn't feel worthwhile to do them without doing them justice as a different culture.
