Why didn't Earth play a bigger role in ME2? Doesn't make any sense

Since the main story is about humans disappearing and we need to investigate it.  Instead of having 5 useless teammates, we could've done some missions on Earth.  Set up ME2 just like ME1 where they concentrated the main story on 4 or 5 areas in the game then have side quests in between.  It would make sense to have the Collectors invade earth then make Shepard the hero and save Earth then go back and destroy the Collector base.  After leaving the Collector ship, it would've been a perfect time for the Collectors to invade earth.  Shepard was a badass in ME1 but Bioware made him/her a **** for needing to rely on 11 teammates who are supposedly one of the best that the galaxy has to offer.  Shepard had 6 teammates in ME1and some of them aren't even considered the best in their own army/race or whatever and they still kicked ass.  Some people say the second game or movie in a trilogy is about setting up the last of the trilogy so the story is about character developement but that's just an excuse for an average story.

I'm still hoping we will get to set foot on Earth in ME3.

I'm guessing we will set foot on Earth in ME3. It will probably be attacked (by Reapers, Turians ? Who knows).

While I agree some content for Earth would have been nice I don't see it as not making any sense. I thought the premise was to stop the Collectors before their plan came to fruition.

In the final "suicide" mission I assumed my other teammates weren't just sitting around waiting for me to do my part, they were actually running as a second team.

Maybe if we had to choose our squad and then choose which of the two paths at each stage we would play through while the rest of the team did the other would have made it more immersive....barring the final showdown of course, thats the job for the hero/heroine afterall.

That's a stupid idea. If the Collectors attacked Earth the Alliance would have mobilised and Shepard wouldn't be needed. The whole point was that the Collector abductions were occuring in the lawless Terminus Systems where they had nobody to help but Shepard.
By necessity the Collectors were meant to be an abstract, unknowable threat for the majority of the game, because this is the second part of a trilogy and it has to be kept relatively low-key in preparation for the grand finale in ME3, which no doubt will feature Earth.

That's a smart idea.  It seems like everything only succeeds if Shepard is there to do it so having Shepard fighting along side the Alliance would be good.  Plus it's like Shepard is gaining an ally to fight the Reapers just like he did with the Quarians, Geth,  Krogans, etc.  It doesn't say in ME2 that Shepard is gathering allies to fight Reapers but it's pretty obvious that he's earning their trust which means he will ask for help in ME3.

That was my biggest disappointment in the final mission. I thought for sure that I'd get to control the other team at some point, maybe the end of that section but yea ...Posted Image

Because in a science fiction universe where you have your own ship, a huge galaxy of new planets to explore and interesting aliens to meet, Earth is the very LAST place I would be interested in visiting. Seriously, it would be boring. Probably just full of humans and similar to what we have now, just with slightly advanced technology and a few changes.

What's the point of having a whole galaxy to explore with fascinating new places and alien cultures and then going back home instead?

Anyway, I'm sure I'm in the minority, but I really don't get it. Where's the spirit of exploration? Is it simply the desire for the familiar?

Protecting it from an alien invasion might be interesting, at least.

Because the REAPERS need to attack Earth, then Shepard needs to save it and defeat the Reapers once and for all.

Generally speaking the setting is there to serve the plot.  There was absolutely no point in the story where Earth was needed.

This.

Also, should we ever need to save Earth (or choose to, as this is ME), the battle to protect it would most likely take place in and around Arcturus Station.

Because all of the humans disappearing are out in the Terminus colonies, and the game takes place in the Terminus Systems, which is a different part of the galaxy then Citadel Space and Earth.

And i would disagree about not wanting to visit Earth in a Sci-Fi story/game. Yes, exploration is nice, but Earth is home, and it is familiar to us, and gives us a point of reference. Also, it would be fun to visit Earth in the ME universe to see how it has changed, that in itself is worth the trip. Granted, i would want to wait until ME3 to do so, but still, it would be great to visit Earth and see what lies in store for us in 2185

I'd better get to land at an Earth city in ME3, that **** is the worst **** tease ever. Landing at a Mars Colony would be a nice touch as well.
