I suspect the main reason for the removal of the same sex content was schedule. There are a number of other things about this game that feel like they barely got it out the door including
- fact that any hope of decent planet exploration is coming in DLC
- various emails that say things like "Hey it's good to hear you're alive, come visit me at the med clinic when you are next at the citadel"
- buggy cover controls
So I don't think there is any grand EA and/or Bioware conspiracy against same sex couples.
What I do find troubling and potentially homophobic are some of the remarks and actions by bioware employees on this subject. I do not mean this as an attack. I know they are well intentioned people who are trying to do a difficult job of managing these forums as best as possible. However I think these are points of insensitivity towards the GLBT community.
These include:
- Not taking a supportive position towards the GLBT community. IE reply to these threads/questions with something like "we hear your concerns and for various reasons we did not include them in ME2. We will consider this for ME3." Instead we get responses like:
- Claiming that there is no same sex romance in ME1 or ME2 when there is several (admittedly of poor quality) examples of female same-sex romance.
- Claiming Liara is not same-sex through a lame canard of her race is unisex
- Stanley Woo silencing threads on this topic and giving all participates a time out. There was nasty homophobia going on in those threads and rather than suspend/ban the homophobes and those who took the bait and flamed back he chose to silence the discussion which is very troubling. This is sending the message that those of us who are GLBT (I'm lesbian BTW) don't have a voice in this community.
This behavior makes me sad because as a lesbian gamer I found past Bioware games a refreshing haven from the usual male/hetero centric attitudes that I just learn to live with in most games.
I still love Bioware and their games I just feel like they have lost some of their progressiveness in this last release.
I don't know what happened with Mass Effect 2. Dragon Age has done a much better job in this respect.
