Just discovered this thread today. I assume Rig is not producing anymore of Ugly Shepard? I am only basing this on what I have read in the thread so I might have missed something written elsewhere.

If you do the mission for the asari consort in ME 1 and talk to the elcor related to the mission, she will give you a trinket to use on the prothean artifact orb thing on some planet you can explore. After activating it you get a message explaining that you received some memories from a cromagnon witnessing a prothean ship observing him. I think that maybe Shepard received genetic data which was then activated during the Lazarus project!

^Unfortunately the whole elcor/trinket part of the assignment never carried through to ME2. The way it was originally intended, if you did that part of the assignment, Sha'ira didn't leave the Citadel, and there was unused audio in ME2 to cover this. Alas, the content was cut from the game.
