Zevran, who starts as friend, and turns into the LI. He's easily the most loyal companion, be it friend or lover.

Morrigan, who's mission in life is to disapprove of my PC, but she and her always end up friends somehow

Oghren, who is far from a shallow drunk, and also very loyal.

Alistair, who gets swapped in (or out) for Morrigan or Oghren, and is the regular before getting Oghren. Him and my PC are good friends, even though she usually breaks up with him at some point.

Under also ran:
Shale, Sten, and of course the PCs dog. She loves her dog, who never disapproves of anything she does.

Edited for a reason. Really.

My mage really liked Morrigan, but that was a romance so it doesn't count. The friends were Alistair, Zevran and Shale. Sten was respected, but my PC recognized him as a slave to his religion and couldn't get over that because of the background in the circle tower. Oghren is ok, but the smell was too much to handle. Leliana was kept in the party as "reserve cannon fodder", same as Wynne was "in case of zombies, leave behind".

The Aeducan on the other hand liked Leliana, Sten and Oghren but didn't trust Morrigan. Alistair and Zevran were also welcome, but Shale had to die when she turned against me.

Dog is of course the most trusted companion for all characters, but I almost never use it. I just can't miss the banters and comments from other party members.

ROFL - What, you don't think she'd be useful during a zombie apocalypse?

Those who I want to be with for the laughs - Alistair, Oghren, Zev.

Those I'd trust with with my life 100% - Alistair, Oghren, Wynne.

Those who I always want with me for the tough encounters - Alistair, Morrigan

I've done two playthroughs where my PC hated Alistair (and he hated them) and he got left at the camp a lot. Those were by far the least engaging and felt "wrong", so I'd have to say Alistair. To steal a term from Lost, if I'm playing a "good" PC, he is their constant and the ones who trust him do so with their lives.

Besides him, I'd say Zevran is a close second followed by Leliana. My PC's all end up really liking Morrigan and they trust her, but there is still a distance there that would keep me from using the term "best friend".

Of course, I love all of the companions (except Wynne) and I imagine that my PC's are pretty mopey when most of them scatter after the Archdemon is slain.

For Alqua, my Elven Mage, it was Zevran, who is his best friend and his lover. Aside from him, who's indeed much more than a fried, Alistair.

For Lahearl, my Dalish Rogue, who also romanced Zevran, whom he felt was a brother-in-arms, and a his lover too, his best friend was, surprisingly enough, Shale, closely followed by Oghren.

Morrigan, strangely enough. Since I tend to play "good" characters, she tends to disapprove of almost everything I do, and usually gets left at camp. Still, her surprise that you consider her a friend is endearing, her getting choked up when she declares herself your friend is touching, and she actually seems to sincerely want to save your life with the ritual in the end (even though you know she's benefiting from it). I actually think that part goes down much better with a female Warden (or a male Warden who's not romancing her).

I've played through a lot of times, but to be honest I'm pretty hopeless at RPing. I really have to struggle to do it, so I nearly always end up beign BFFs with everyone. But going on what I consider my 'canon' story..

My 'best friends' would have been Alistair (LI), Zevran, and Oghren, possibly also Shale (and Dog, who can forget him!). While my characters always ended up close to Leliana, there was always something of a divide. Wynne is a teacher/mentor, really, rather than a friend. Sten has a relationship of mutual respect and cameraderie, possibly friendship.

Morrigan is an interesting case. Like SurelyForth says, there is always a kind of distance between you. Nonetheless, my main character became quite close to her, and ultimately did trust her with her life (and Alistair's too). 'Perhaps even a sister', and all that. I find it interesting how different the ritual comes across depending on your relationship with Morrigan.

Morrigan all the way, she always approved with everything I said, got her approval up to 100 really fast. I don't understand tho, people saying that she's the hardest to romance and get approval from, I can get her to love the first time I visit camp after Lothering, also gifts to her are everywhere and easy to get.

 Others benefit from the ritual too, I think. If you partake in the ritual... for one, no wardens (save Riordan) die when the archdemon is slain; no love interests have to suffer your death; however, at a price. She's not the only one -- added that she also has to carry a baby with the essence of an old god.

But! That aside, Morrigan and Shale would be my BFFs. Since I mostly like playing as a mage, in my mind, I could connect with Morrigan better. She had some good points about her views on apostates not wanting to be tied down the Circle and not really being "lured by the temptations of blood magic." I respected her opinions and really began to appreciate her character especially toward the end when she offered the ritual. Sad, but a genuine and touching in her offer.

Shale, for me, was just interesting. Giving a her gift and hearing her say, "Ooh! Shiney!" was really hilarious -- I never expected to hear that. Although her obsessive bird problem was creepy, conversations with Shale were decent and the character as a whole always makes me think of HK-47 from KOTOR.

I agree, my first playthrough, she was the second character I got 100 approval right after romancing Alistair. She's not that complicated: she likes jewelry that fits into her persona, those two grimoires are major gifts, as well as the golden mirror found in Orzammar is another major one -- if this helps. All in all, Morrigan's fairly easy to gain approval with like any other character.

My best friend changes with most playthroughs. It used to be Leli was always my best friend and Al my love interest. Then I sort of got sick of her (sorry Leli) and Shale took over. This playthrough though, I'm actually liking Morrigan and she's my best buddy, despite the "Morrigan Disapproves -5" at every decision I make.

Sten. Hands down. When you get to the point where he respects you, it's really neat. I also love the conversation that starts with "you're not as callow as I thought" I LOL'd at that one, it caught me totally offguard. And when he calls my PC "kadan" it really gives me a sense of accomplishment, that I managed to "get" him. I just wish we could find out his "real" name...haven't seen it yet, even when I have him at 100 approval. He tells you it's his title, but never tells you his name - grrr...

Oghren. Total bromance with him.

I thought me and Alistair would get along, but he asks me

"why did you join the Wardens?"

I reply, "I was conscripted."

He goes, "Oh OK I hear Duncan doesn't have to do that much."

ALISTAIR DISAPPROVES -10

It just went downhill from there... He was simply not interested in getting to know me at all.

Alistair ends up as either best friend, love interest or (most often) both. I've had differing relationshonships with the rest, but it's mostly friendly relationships based on leadership apart from Alistair. He's the one my characters really want to talk to and know what he thinks about situations.

I agree, it was hard to like him at first but I did keep him around to give him a chance, I tried to see things more from his point of view and when he calls you kadan it really feels like I've really earned an honor.

Its weird everyone but Leliana were close with me, I can never get close to her, its always stories, stories and stories!!

but these stood out the most

Sten - At the end I was afraid he was going to kidnap me or something, he was just smiling at me all the time...especially at the end of the game the way he was saying "Kadan..." with a big big smile might I add...

Morigann - My PC and her got really close, I found it sweet that she thought of me as a sister, I actually got more sad about her leaving me and saying that I would find her...she was the easiest to talk to it always seemed like.
I think my character went lesbian for her.....

Alistair - What can I say, he was my PC's romance

Zevran - He was my buddy for certain as well, though I did feel bad a few times in the game

In all but my first game (where I didn't know what I was doing), it was Sten.

Zevran is awesome but unless you're romancing him, he's tricky - you tell him to back off, you get a big disapproval hit, but if you don't discourage him then he thinks he's in a romance with you and you take an even bigger hit when you choose your real love interest over him. (He is my favourite romance, however).

I have a soft spot for Alistair but he's almost always kicked to the kerb after Landsmeet where I pick up the other fella.

I'm going to respond strictly for my first PC, a Dalish Elf female and I'm going to say Morrigan. I felt very sad when she left the party.

I also got quite attached to Alistair on that first walkthrough and that honestly took me by surprise. He did jack for me as a romance, and I thought I had classified him successfully into the "Whatever" category and moved onto Zevran, when I got his "jealousy" talk.  I was like /sob. It continued with me feeling too sorry for him to force him to do the ritual, which lead to my death in the end. Most unrewarding friendship I ever had. :P

Actually in the conversation with Zevran when he asks what you expect of him (romance or just a buddy) he gave me +1 approval when I told him I just wanted to stay friends, no disapproval hit at all.

Leliana was without a doubt my best friend, and she wasn't my character's lover. I was utterly convinced in the way she interacted with me that we were very good friends.

I also took her everywhere.
