Has there been a thread on Mordin's science? I think it's one of the parts of the writing where someone really did their homework, namely:
-relatively accurate representations of typical academia and their traditions
-extremely exciting speculative fiction about computational genomics and advances in recombinant technology. Meanwhile, the lay press is agog with things like iGEM at MIT, the new Wyss institute at Harvard, and all sorts of neat new tech and science in bio and otherwise. It's pretty cool to see Mordin using recombinant tech to construct his viral vectors, targeted therapies and whatnot, then read about how the whole field of biotech/synthetic biology is moving along in that direction in the real world.
I understand that real world wet bench bio is still messy with a lot of sloshing and pipetting but still, the improvement in the theory behind synthetic bio and recombinant tech is cool to watch (and neat to see in the game)
-Ethics - kudos to the writer who attempted to implement scientific ethics into Mordin's loyalty quest. Although no huge statements were really made, I appreciated that time was taken to explore various aspects of the Krogan genophage - the thrill of the project and the murky morality that overshadows it. The contrast between him and his student had the potential for brilliance (although I felt that the way the game was set up, it came out as a little preachy, unfortunately).
-The amusing thing - I really dislike the main ME2 story about the Reapers, but this makes it more ridiculous. Mordin can design organic life forms via advanced computational genomic tools and recombinant tech. What do the reapers do? They have to gather "human genetic material" strand by strand to pour it into their reaper. Reaper tech is woefully craptastic! I mean, it's genetic material - even some random 21st century lab here has better biotech than the reapers....Mordin could probably do the work of the Collectors in under a month, sitting on some salarian beach using an intergalactic version of E coli to do the heavy lifting....
