I guess some people forgot the
i) Normandy elevator
ii Noveria elevator
iii) C-sec to docking bay elevator
iv) Citadel tower elevator (luckily bypassable with the rapid transit system)
Don't see things through the "Good Ole Days" glasses. If you find the loading screens too long then go get a SSD storage disk. I replayed ME1 and there is no difference in the time you use for the stupid elevator ride between a Athlon single core 2 GB and a Core i7 6 GB. This means you cannot shorten the stupid elevator rides unlike ME2's loading screens
The only elevator that was not slow was the Fero's elevator and guess what, there was no lift riding animation = just as "immersion" breaking as the ME2 loading screens

QFMFT. What sucked is whatever conversations your squadmates had were as common as a needle in a haystack by the time you were halfway through the game.

Having to save constantly in ME1 because the elevators would get stuck is not fun at all.

What was truly immersion breaking was the fact that every single elevator was imported from the 1950s.The only elevator that was not slow was the Fero's elevator and
guess what, there was no lift riding animation = just as "immersion"
breaking as the ME2 loading screens
We can travel across the galaxy in an instant with mass effect fields, but it takes a minute for an elevator to go up a couple of floors.

I don't think it's being implied that they go back in exactly as they were implimented before with the extra built in time, but instead put them back in with party banter and glactic news and as soone as that's over you are out of the loading screen, no adding 5-10 more seconds so that you feel like you were really high up.

Elevators are a great way to add more glitches into a game that doesn't need more of them.

By the gods, i remember this when i first played it. The Noveria elevator, forever trapped in a standing position unable to leave or press a button or do anything with an old un-updated save game. That was really a crappy feeling

Even then they are a useless mechanism. Take Garrus and Tali and run up the stairs. They do the banter thing. No forced waiting required. You're doing something in game already.
What most people actually want it the banter but enforced waiting to hear banter (which either repeats or runs out) is not a good idea at any angle.
The news reports using the terminals are already much much better then enforced waiting. What is missing is placing a new report terminal + a tv screen with emily wong in the captain's quarters and allowing quick channel change so i do not have to hear all the previous reports of destiny ascension's 20 planet cruise just to get to the latest news .

Just add the option to warp to the end of the ride, as soon as loading is finished and it will be exactly as quick as the loading screens, without breaking continuity the way they do.
One advantage of taking in news reports and banter in the elevators, that I haven't noticed anyone mentioning, is that it avoids the situation I keep having (in many games from many developers, not just BW), with "spontaneous" discourse triggered while running around, where some character begins talking the exact same second I'm activating one thing or other, or walking through a door, which cuts the conversation and flags it as played, never to return. Now THAT has had me reloading a not recent enough save, more than a few times.

You are going to wait one way or the other, this is what folk seem to miss. There's a not a seamless way for the game to happen so, during load screens, your choices are:
1. Codex Stuuf (DAO)
2. Odd schematics (ME2)
3. Elevator rides (ME1)
Take your pick and #3 looks spiffy to me.

(I demand comments from Tali and Garrus on the Mako once we get the Hammerhead.)

How is it useless? We need to have loading screens, that's a simple fact of games now days. So we can either sit there and look at the same loading screen over and over, or we an sit in an elevator and listen to our party members talk to each other and hear what's going on in the universe.

I think the problem there is that because loading times vary from PC to PC (and the actual loading times aren't that bad at all), it would be hard to implement conversations without cutting people off mid-sentence.Daeion wrote...

BioWare already tried to critic-proof ME2 by removing the elevators, so I doubt they'll change their minds with that. Critics are less likely to complain about loading screens because it's like you said - that's a simple fact of games nowadays.

Just speed up the elevator scene a little and we're all set.
