Mass Effect 2 has caused quite a stir, I've put this small FAQ together to answer some of the questions I most often see on the boards. I hope this helps you all.
Q. Why does Dr. Chakwas spend so much time in front of her computer?
A. Dr. Chakwas is actually a huge Galaxy of Fantasy fan and spends most of her time aboard the Normandy playing it. This explains both her constant time in front of the computer and her anti-social behavior beyond initial conversations with her. This is also the reason she is so quick to suggest returning to the Normandy once rescued from the Collectors.
Q. Why is “ASSUMING DIRECT CONTROL” so popular? Is it really that funny?
A. No it’s no… ASSUMING CONTROL… yes it is. Harbinger knew this would take off and help bring the masses over to our… I mean the ‘reaper’ way of thinking and is also a comedy genius. RELEASING CONTROL… um… so we’re all sick of it.
Q. Why build a human Reaper?
A. Let’s use an analogy. Let's say the Reapers are Internet Explorer and for years you've been number one and thought you were the best, but then Mozilla Firefox comes along and kills you. What do you do? Create a new version and dress it up to be as much like Firefox as possible of course! (answer stolen from previous post by me)
Q. Why does Commander Shepard and team sometimes have assault rifles in cutscenes, but not in game?
A. Without the proper training in the weapon Shepard and Team use a slightly updated version of the gun from Mass Effect 1. It is capable to collapse down to an amazingly hard to see size, which is why it doesn’t appear on the character models and it is not usable in game because they overheat them during the cutscenes and they have to cool down. Thermal clips don’t seem so bad now eh?
Q. Speaking of Thermal Clips™ how on earth is this a technological improvement?
A. As anyone who had to buy gear licenses know there are a lot of weapons manufactures in the galaxy and when you have weapons with a seemingly endless supply of ammo and have reached the maximum amount of options to modify these guns profits start to sink. That when Thermal Clips™ were invented, is it an upgrade, not really, but now those gun manufactures can all stick their name and price on these universal doodads and make a lot of money. Rather than ask questions why don’t you go out and support galactic economic stability and buy some for a change rather than picking them off the ground?
Q. Why is Liara/Ashley/Tali/Samara/Morinth/Miranda/Jack/Kelly so popular?
A. Because they have breasts …Solved!
Q. Why do we have to scan planets when we have an AI that can do it for us?
A. Because EDI knows scanning planets sucks and she doesn't want to do it. People are slightly to terrified of what will happen if they insist.
Q. What happened to the Mako?
A. It is currently smashed into some ice and rock surrounded by the rest of the Normandy debris. Of course it probably still works, it'd just take half and hour to get it out.
Q. Why doesn't a Sole-Survivor Shepard feel more animosity for Cerberus?
A. When Shepard finds out about Cerberus he/she/it is still under the effects of painkillers, sedatives, and that special buzz one gets when a new electronic device fires up for the first time. In other words everythings groovy...
Q. Why haven't we gone to Earth in Mass Effect yet?
A. Because if you want to see Earth go outside, if you want to probe Uranus play Mass Effect.
