I recently purchased ME1 from steam and when i go to run the game it either stops working after i change a setting and hit apply or with in the first minute of starting m first off ship mission.  has anyone encounted something like this and found a fix?

Disable the Steam Overlay, I've heard if can cause issues in some games. one reason I don't buy DLed games also there damn picky >.<. Also what is your PCs spec's ? Look at my Signature for an example. ^^
