Hi There,

I've trying to set up an archer taking down an opponent by shooting him in the back. Due to camera angles and the like, all I have to do is have the vitim's back display the arrow sticking out of it as he moves forword. Does anyone know a good way to stick the arrow in him? I was thinking of creating a placeable model of the arrow and parenting it to the actor in the hope that it would track properly... but I have my doubts.

Do I need to make an off screen creature hostile towards my actor and have them attack with the hopes that they'll  hit my actor in the back? I'm really at a loss for this, so any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Cheers!

There are animations for being hit by things like arrows and your idea of using a placeable arrow should work fine. You just need to look at the actors coordinates when he starts and ends his movement and mirror the difference with your arrow.

(I've put people on animals and in wagons with chairs and as long as I mirrored the change in coordinates things look fine.)

I would look at animations for your actor getting hit with an arrow in the back, look at fx's of arrows flying and then add the arrow as you had planned. (You could add the arrow 1st of all and then just make it visible after the actor is hit with it.)

Do you have my spreadsheets that list animations and fxs for use in cutscenes?

Thanks for the response, Beerfish!

Yes, I've got your DAAnimationsListingv2.xls and I've got the animation of the character being hit from behind all rigged up and working nicely (that doc is a life saver! Extremely aweome!).

If I add the arrow model to the character by "associating" it, will it not slide off the character's back as they fall to the ground organically even if I offset the arrow with the translations of the character?

It feels like an animation like the one getting hit from behind would have an associated arrow/fx designed for it? I've noticed this with alot of other animations that should work together (ex:a body being dragged and a character dragging it). Is there any kind of system already in place for these sorts of associations? Can it be applyed to my guy getting shot? Is there a way of "equipping" the arrow in him or something?

I get the feeling I'm probably missing something painfully obvious, haha.

Thanks again!

I did a bit of a test on this and it can be done with some finagling. I didn't associate the arrow with anything.

I gave the actor an animation of being hit with an arrow.

I then chose the arrow placeable (under the models category on the palette) and just placed it in the cutscene.

I manipulated the arrows xyz, pitch, yaw, roll numbers to bring the arrow up in the air and moved it to about the level of the actors back and moved it out of view of the camera. I then used a series of keyframes along the time line for the arrow each time manually moving it on screen or with the coordinates to match the actor jerking from being hit then falling. The actor ended up on his face with the arrow sticking out of his back.

(To start the action I maually moved the arrow from off screen into the actors back using keyframes over a very short duration, thus it looked like the arrow flying and hitting him in the back.)

Haha, good ol' matchmove.

Thanks for the help! I step keyed the arrow off screen until impact and got arrow tracking well enough with manual keys as well as functioning blood splatter. Thanks again!!
