I for one think so. It's trite, tired and cliched. For all
ME's strengths, this just about breaks the game for me. It
would probably make the level design feel more natural since
they wouldn't constantly be having to make sure that you've got a
crate or desk to duck behind every ten feet.

Was this some higher ups bright idea that this go in and stay in for all
three games or something?

It just does not go with the rest of the game. Period.

Um, if you are in a firefight, you want to take cover. Duh.

The combat has evolved so much since ME. You can clearly see a lot of the time developing the game was based around that. With a working combat system they can now evolve it even further for ME3 and make even more enjoyable. However I would prefer they dont spend as much time with it with the next instalment and just mainly stick with the RPG elements. I dont think they will need to now the foundations are laid. After all most dont want a shooter but an RPG.

Yeah I'm sorry but those of you who don't think "real men" use cover are complete idiots. If you don't use cover IRL you are dead. Period.

Real fights use cover. Tactical based combat uses cover. Ask any REAL soldier, the first thing they do is locate cover.

You have been watching too much tv/movies if you think that you don't use cover 99% of the time.

Goobers...

Personally I don't mind the cover-based combat. It allows the player to strategize a bit before making their next move.

It's not like we're glued to the cover ALL the time. On Insanity difficulty there are much more tough enemies that they can move closer to you thus forcing you to get out of cover and spray them or move to somewhere safe. Geth Hunters, Harbinger, Husks and the Scions forces you to move out of cover because they're just so tough to kill.

Just my two cents.

I loved the first game, but when i went back to it a few days ago to make another shepard for import, i must say that i have been spoiled by the combat of ME2 and now think that the combat in ME1 sucks ass.

When ME1 came first came out, i thought the combat kicked ass, but the system in ME2 is an improvment in every aspect and eventhough i have also noticed the convenient boxes and walls around i think its still better than anything in ME1 relating to combat.

Without the cover system I wouldn't have enjoyed combat anywhere near as much as I did.

Boxes and walls to hide behind might be a bit too conveniently placed, but I hate old-fashioned shooters (and I like that the combat in Mass Effect is shooter based rather than a traditional RPG system) where you circle strafe around enemies like a mad man while soaking up a ton of bullets.

You can of course have shooter mechanics where you do use cover frequently without having an actual cover system that glues you to walls, but that's more relevant in a first than a third person shooter. Though Killzone 2 on the PS3 actually had cover mechanics in the single player campaign that worked quite well, despite the first person perspective.

Cover combat systems are boring outside the of online FPS games.

The AI is obviously either set to whack-a-mole or bull rush.

The level design suffers from having to include oddly placed boxes, crates, and other partitions for the sake of providing cover.

I would never ask for tactical shooter elements to be taken out of FPSs BUT since we are talking about ME then the opportunity exists to have slighty more unique combat.

um.....NO! It should have been in the first game. In fact; I saw a demo of ME1 that originally had it. It was the first thing that frew me to the ME universe....so that a BIG NO on that! Keep the combat and drop the helmets.........

I like the cover system in Mass Effect, I wish they would stop mapping the run and cover button together without letting us remap them seperately. There is nothing more annoying than running to a piece of cover only to have Shepard plant his ass against the wrong piece of cover... on Insanity it is a glaring weak-point in the way they implemented the system.

Also I wish they would add more aesthetic value to the environments that feature combat, walking into a room filled with waist high boxes and barriers is pretty foreshadowing of combat and makes it less immersive when you KNOW you are about to be ambushed.

See, when you state ridiculous things like this as facts, you make me feel I like a military service pissing contest is in order. Fistly, how do you reckon ME1 is more believable than ME2 in this regard? All you did there was to move upright behind cover. You can do as much and more in ME2. Secondly, you didn't really need cover in ME1 as anyone remotely capable could control the field, while also being virually indestructable. Better indistructable crates than that.

Cover in ME1 was more organic and less blatently obvious to the player, which by default makes it better. Plus while on planets that allowed you to bring it along, the Mako made excellent mobile cover with a bite. You don't get that in ME2, you getting jarringly neat rows of waist high objects that nothing can destroy unless specifically marked.

You know what would be interesting? A first person shooter, RPG hybrid.

Or am I the only one that misses Deus Ex?

I'm actually thinking about playing it again.  Been a long time.  But... not really pining for the "first" in first person shooter.  I am quite happy with third-person.   You get a wider field of view and a better situational awareness.

Have you heard of Fallout 3?

Although as much as I enjoyed that game, the first person shooter mechanics in FO3 were pretty much as bad as the third person shooter mechanics in ME1.
I've been meaning to get around to try out a large FO3 mod called Wanderer's Edition or something like that though - supposedly it makes the game a much better shooter, and a lot harder overall.

Deus Ex 3 is supposed to come out this year though, let's hope that it turns out better than the second one.

My hope is that since BW seems to be using this same engine they will work more on the enemies. THe harder the difficulty you set it too the more they should push up on you. All of them trooper fodder to commanders.

Bring back granades and have them lob some your way if you are holding a single point. I dunno I just do not see them moving away from this cover system in the third game so maybe some more suggestions from what we would like to see.

If there is one thing I would like Bioware to learn from ME2, it's to improve things that have issues instead of removing them completely. The cover based combat should stay for ME3, but it could be better.

I didn't like the corridor on rails effect the battles in ME 2 had with them. What I would have like to see is more open battle with multiple paths of attack. Less obvious cover and battle areas. Perhaps even the ability of Shepard or your team mates and enemies to make cover by flipping over tables, or knocking down shelves and stuff like the enemies did in FEAR. I want to keep the areas open so if I needed to I could retreat out further from that Damn YMIR Mech that seems to take forever to kill in Insanity.

I want the option of being able to just crouch behind something as cover not be stuck to it. Definitely needs better AI that makes attempts to flank you or uses powers. Even bring back enemy Snipers. Also think it pretty retarded that say you are behind a corner just peaking out but not glued to the wall the enemy can hit you but same place and glued to the wall the magically shoot at the spot that hits cover and not you.

I think I'm going to bookmark this and then come back here when people start complaining about taking headshots from souped up enemy AI.

I suppose you would love some point an click combat system where everything would be decided upon dice rolls or maybe one where characters would be moving on a grid attacking in turns?

No, I disagree.

Though a tactical turn-based strategy game based on ME would be awesome:D

But no, the cover system could be improved but never removed. It just fits into the whole tactical-squad shooter thing.

One thing that annoyed me is that when you take cover, your head can be sticking out but enemies cannot hurt you whatsoever (unless they flank you), but you can shoot AI that is sticking out. Taking cover should be more realistic (if you're exposed you should be able to get shot) and I agree that the cover should be placed less obviously ("Opposing sides of obvious cover? I wonder what is going to happen!"). Otherwise I enjoyed the game's action and I think BioWare should stick with the cover system, with some tweaks of course.

The game you are looking for is Borderlands. Give it a play! Oh and they just released a huge expansion for it. It's awesome!
