Nonetheless, on my latest game he didn't promise Goldanna anything - he in fact concluded she was a money-grubbing harpy and left her to rot. B*****.

Haha! xD I've never had him promise anything to Goldanna on any of my playthroughs either, that wench just needs to be smacked around by an ogre and summarily crushed to death like Cailan.

Loghain isn't half the man Alistair is, he betrayed Callian his own son in law and king, and by betraying him his daughter, and his own country that he said he loved out of some old hatred!!! So how is he better then the man who has every right to be hate Logain and become king, but doesn't want too, which makes him a far better man and King then Logain could ever hope to be!!!...

Alistair is an awesome person. <3

Its true. I never would have guessed anyone could find a reason not to like Alistair. I was wrong of course. I think some folks don't like having anyone more awesome on their team than they are.

How can you execute Alistair and like it, I did it once just for the story. But after I did it, I felt like I kicked a puppy.

This.  Though I think I actually felt worse when he left and became a drunk.

So I always pawn him off on Anora.

Yes. Harden his heart, marry him to Anora, feed Loghain to the archdemon = great ending.

My PC loves listening to Alistair saying "If Anora thinks she can rule to her hearts content, she will be surprised." (after Loghain sacrifices himself). It makes her very, very happy that her good friend Alistair will be a great king.

Go Alistair.

Y'know, I think the OP was interested in the Goldanna-Alistair relationship, not more venting about disliking Alistair, or Alistair vs. Loghain. Maybe we could have a thread about Alistair that doesn't devolve into one of these?

I only had him promise to help her on the first playthrough, before I realized that no matter how nice he was, she'd still be a total harpy. Now I just get him out of there as soon as possible. ;) I suppose I should think about the children. Alistair would probably want to help them even if their mother is pretty awful..

Uhhh Alistair as King for any extended period of time would get smashed by Orlais....

Without any external threat such as the Darkspawn, Alistair is a weak king, a pathetic one, same with Cailan. One's just far too into honor and justice, the other into glory and battle. Neither one of them could lead a country to prosperity. Every king requires some form of cunning and must be able to disregard morality and ethics.

Loghain would be a far better ruler than Alistair in those terms. Alistair doesn't want to be king because he knows he would not be competent at it, Loghain is also a far better general and would NOT lead his men to destruction for sentiments and honor. Alistair would fight a battle even if his defeat was certain..

Alistair doesn't even act like a man...

Orly? I guess you have a non-hardened Alistair, because my Alistair does just fine. Especially with me by his side. ;) His problem was never one of capability. It was that he was afraid of letting people down. Fear of failing others very often has nothing to do with actual ability.

Addressing the OP's question, I don't think we will ever see this addressed. If anything, it would have been addressed in this game. My personal take is that Goldana got killed during the battle of Denerim. I don't blame her for how she feels, but she didn't have to be a total ****.

Many would disagree entirely, of course. Personally, I think a king who would disregard morality and ethics would be a very poor king indeed. I will agree that Alistair would fight a risky battle rather than abandoning the country to the darkspawn--a positive in my view, not a negative, but as to him acting like a man, I can only assume that our views of that differ so widely that there is no possible common ground.

That being said, what does this have to do with the topic?

Well, I'm not about to begin a marriage by having my father-in-law executed, so Alistair has to go.

This is how I imagine the conversation would go if I for some reason let Allistair become king:

Me - Let's talk about those intelligent darkspawn that I've been fighting lately.
Allistair - I would rather talk about that time we went to see Goldanna and I made that promise to...
Me - I DON'T CARE!

What if Alistair is a wandering drunk? Maybe he'll head over to Goldanna's place and ask for a place to sleep? Another mouth to feed... just what she deserves.

You're marrying Anora? You do realise you'll be nothing more than the Queen's husband? I wouldn't want an ending like that; I imagine I'd be the subject of many a mocking conversation behind my back.

I think find euphemism is pretty easy in this game.

Oh, but I killed Loghain in enough creative ways to obliterate anything you could possibly do to Alistair. In fact, I think I shall do it again for good measure! And his purple-bug-eyed head will roll yet again!

Heh I've killed Loghain..hmmm 12 times...did let him live once, don't think he was all that interesting.   Didn't allow him a hero's death,  "I" killed the Archdemon. :)

Guess I really do live in the gutters.

Being that Alistair will not be in the PC's party, I don't see how you would even know if he's keeping his promise to Goldana unless she were to cross paths with the PC and say so (which I don't think is likely).

I just assume that Alistair keeps his promise or that the PC puts Goldanna up somewhere nice in Vigil's Keep if he's too dead or drunk to keep his promise.

totally, dude!
just the in-game story convinced me of this--but after reading the prequel books, i don't think i'll be able to spare loghain's life on any playthrough.  i don't spare total d*ckheads.  just, you know, a general Life Rule.

Much prefer Loghain, too. Alastair is a whiner and has a rather strange attachment to Duncan - a man he only knew 6 months.  By Alastair's own admission he was ignored by Cailin and Marik. If you've played RTO it is obvious Cailin planned to dump Anora for an Orlesian bride - definitely handing Fereldan back on a plate - not forgetting he knew the battle was doomed before it began. Made Loghain make more sense, to me. Also, it never seemed to dawn on Alastair that perhaps Duncan would have wanted to make Loghain a Grey Warden - after all, Riordan was a senior Warden and Alastair very junior.  Posted Image

I hope he does keep his word, but it sounded like an empty promise. So in all of my subsequent playthroughs, we leave right after giving Goldana the 15 sovereigns.
