I bought Mass Effect 1 a few weeks ago but couldn't play because i was having internet issues and it needed to verify my game. Now that my internet issues are fixed i thought i would finally be able to play. . . but no.
I've installed the game (twice) and opened the game menu and click play. the menu disapears and then straight away without any other screens i get a message from vista saying that Mass Effect has stopped working and thats its searching for a solution. Then it says that a problem was caused the program to stop working properly and that windows would close the program and let me know if it finds a solution.
Now im not a tech kind of person, my laptop is a Toshiba Satellite A350 and i think that i meet the minimum requirements but ijust dont know what to do to make this work.
Any help would be appreciated.
Here are 2 links to my laptops specs:

Laptop specs can always be a bit funny.
In the config, try setting everything to minimum, and by memory you should have a safe mode sound selection. If that works, try increasing your settings bit by bit.
If that doesn't work, try disabling UAC if you haven't already.

Also, try applying the 1.02 patch (which is a HUGE pain to find now on the website):

Those links you point to list two different specs for the CPU... which makes me think there's some amount of customizability to this model. Do you have the specs for your model specifically?
That said, both list the Radeon Mobility 3650 and a decent CPU, so if you're at least somewhat in line with those you should indeed be fine.
The immediate thing I'd try is to run Mass Effect in XP compatibility mode and/or with administrative privileges - try all 3 combinations until you hopefully find one that works. (Right-Click on ME and select "Properties.") And yes, always make sure you're patched when having trouble with a game.

Another option, find yourself a legit copy of Windows 7 and get rid of vista. Or even downgrade to windows xp. Vista was , is, and always will be a nightmare of compatibility issues.
If none of those are possible options, Try these things first :
Make sure all drivers are up to date. Video, Sound, DirectX, Windows updates. (Vista Service Packs 1 AND 2.) Rebooting as instructed.
Uninstall the game completely, run a system cleanup to get rid of the temp files and reboot.
(I know all the experts are going to say some of these things are unnecessary but they also will NOT hurt any)
Once all is up to date, Reinstall the game completely.
Install all patches to update the game to version 1.02.
Reboot (Yes yes yes everyone I know this isn't necessary but it allows buggy vista to update properly and avoid him being asked over and over if everything was installed correctly.)
Now when your laptop restarts and all is loaded into windows, Start the game. Configure everything to minimum or medium settings at most and hopefully you'll be killing geth and spanking Ashley in no time.
IF none of this works feel free to message me further and I'll help all I can.

OK so I downloaded Mass Effect 1 *updated and all* about a week ago on Steam, and when i try to play it, it just says Preparing Mass Effect and then it goes away in under than a second and nothing else happens. My friend and I are still trying to figure this out.
We are looking up stuff all the time and nothing is helping...
I havent even been able to play the game!<_<

When recieving the Vista error message, where the program immediately stops working, updating to newest patch did the trick for me.
Just open the Launcher and press the "Learn more" in the patch information window, below the Mass Effect buttons (Play, Configure, etc.). Download and install the patch and voila - hello to John Shepard and goodbye spare time

Whenever windows poped up an error message, I'd open up event viewer to see which file crashed the system.
right click computer->manage, then select event viewer and look for the time when it happened.
Sometimes it could be video card driver.
Please also make sure you started the launcher as administrator, you do that by right clicking the launcher icon, then run as administrator. Of course you can just rid it for good in user management under control panel.
The other possibility is that your laptop has build in component that might crash with the game, components such as automatic update to manufacturer, some media center at startup, or some kind of toolkits. If you could identify such is the case, just switch them off or rid them off startup.

Just thought I'd ask if you have tried changing the settings so you dont open the game in fullscreen. I've had issuse like this before and if you change the settings before you actualy start the game so it opens in a box, then once you get to the menu change it to full screen. Hope that helps (even tho I'm 10 months late) if not I have no idea.
